Some of the pictures look fake. This guy looks more realistic.

Lara Farms gets a 6 out of 10. He needs to improve his website and his quality control. It's not that hard. Everybody has the right to compete and improve or run their reputation's into the ground as they please.

I pre-order with almost no one. That is an interest free loan. Anytime I have more than one person I can get a product from I don't prepay or pre-order. Raintree Nursery, OneGreenWorld or Gurneys or any of the other companies are definitely not getting "pre-order".

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Campbell White Sapote HELP?
« on: June 01, 2025, 06:28:08 PM »
I feel like the campbell's were sent out too early but the mangos I bought via mail-order from Lara Farms in the past were probably some of the largest 3gallons I'd ever seen, it's a bummer that they wouldn't at least offer a discount on a replacement given the circumstances to at least accept partial responsibility that these were very young.

I'm glad we're all having a similar experience, albeit not always great, at least I take comfort in knowing I'm not blundering my first white sapote growing attempt.
Yeah I wish they would have offered a discount at least but it is what it is. I’m also glad I’m not the only one. The rootstock itself is doing well so at least I have some kind of white sapote I can try grafting on later.  :)
The guy is too eager to sell. He needs to let his grafts heal longer before selling. He is going to ruin his rep. If this guy gets enough 50/50 reviews he is going to suffer.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Butterscotch sapodilla
« on: May 14, 2025, 07:24:26 PM »
The fruit was sweet but to be honest I did not like it.

So that's another grower saying no thanks after fruiting the tree?
No I wouldn't say, "No thanks", more like, "It's for the collection" I will graft it on to some other varieties. It may improve in time. I was hoping for "pears in brown sugar with a little butterscotch". I'm trying to think of a fruit that I have had that has a butterscotch flavor other than an american persimmon.

I just ate the one fruit that I had on my butterscotch. I bought it from Mike at Treesnmore. Very healthy plant. No bugs no wilt no sickeness. The fruit was sweet but to be honest I did not like it. Not much grit but to be honest it tasted of mamey. It had a definite pumpkin/sweet potatoe flavor that I have never had in any other sapodilla. I bout two and they both have plenty of flowers. I will post up a picture later.

We all qualify as "idiots" then, lol.

Planted a 3g grumi 9 years ago, just started flowering.
You too? Say it ain't so! It took me about that long too. Had a couple of Kei Apples that never flowered after 8.

American persimmons are always squishy, right?

I tried the astringent (hachya?) asian types a couple times and it seems like by the time they are edible they are nearly mush, and I read the american types are the same or worse!

Do people eat them with a spoon?  Or are they normally dried?
Americans are not mushy and depending on the area and the fruit they are more chewy. If you have some that hang on the tree they will dry to a chewier consistency. The same thing happes if you can starve them for water as they are ripening. Americans seem to be less watery than Asians. Nikitas gift is a watery hybrid and rossyanks is less so. Pollinated Nikita's gift have a better texture and flavor than unpollinated Nikita's gift but they are still mushy.

I think what you are trying to do is going to be difficult. Even if they work such as the one you suggested how do we know it would taste good? I have diospyros texana and kaki and hybrids growing in proximity to each other and I haven't noticed them being more seedy than usual. The Texana I have always has male flowers. It's a tough cross you're looking for. Keep up the work. If you can do it you will definitely have something special. Also try to reach out to people who are doing research at universities. Best of luck.

+1 on the question.

This is the G-3 mamey
Tasting amazing…my friend Bobby says like caramel fruity taste…no vegetable/pumpkin taste
I can agree with that

This is the new G-4

I am hyped up for this one
Small size of fruit will be perfect for the greenhouse
They don't taste like pumpkin or sweet potatoes? It seems like it would have that "vegetable" since it has high amounts or betacarotene. How small is small? I learned that there are some softball to baseball sized varieties. Those would interest me. Two last questions. Why would the size influence the amount of time it takes to ripen? When are we planning in the road trip!?!?! 8) 8) 8)

Can anyone confirm whether or not the variety sold as “Chocolate” at Just Fruits and Exotics is the same as the variety sold as “chocolate” at One green world?

Hello everyone,
I have some plants I am looking to sell before winter.
They are big and need to be picked up.
I will not ship any plant. No matter size. I am too busy with college.
I'm sorry :'(

Dovyalis Hybrid! Has fruited before. Makes a small cool red fruit that is a little sour but balanced and sweet. $50

Yellow Cashew. Has fruited before. Has cool flavor for drinks. $75 This is in a 15 gallon pot!

I also have a ton of other random stuff.
Many rare jaboticabas
Plinia sp. Willow
Giant Red Crystal
etc.
I can let them go for a very good price. $50-100

and a lot of the grapes like shine muscat, giant rose, golden finger etc.
I can let them go from $15-20 each

I'm around 2 hours away from Atlanta, Huntsville, Nashville, Knoxville etc.

There's a lot more stuff I am looking to sell potentially. If you are interested, let me know and I can get you a full list and make the trip worth the while!
Best,
Ryan
Do you have anything left? I would definitely or get the dovyalis.

It seems like more and more people are succeeding with growing seedlings. What is your method of growing them.

Calmei is growing just a few miles from me in a zone 9b location with some frost. I hope they do direct sales there but probably not.
Did they just prune? What's all that green near the plants? Is that pruning scraps or weeds or what?

Which root stock do you think is most vigorous.

https://farmnetnpr.com/loquat-festival
I hate to say it. I was there last year and the evwnt was not that great and THERE WERE NO LOQUATS TO BE FOUND when I showed up. I bought a very over priced Oliver for 60 bucks. I had planned on trying many and I actually had none. :-[ :-[ :-[.

22
I have never been able to score a Tanaka. I think my Argelino is still kicking ups dust. I need to verify if it has any fruit on it. I think I will start searching for some white varieties. I already have vista white.

Today

Impressive. What's your protocol?

24
Roseanne loquat, you say? I'm starting to think that cultivar is fake. I could not find hide nor hair of it after I saw the video posted about it. Not one vendor was selling it in the UK that I could find.

25
Khaled? Is it a relative of Algerie? I think Algerie is the parent of piera. I intend to get some of them when they become available again on Lubera. What I can report is NC, SC and coastal Virginia should be able to grow loquats unprotected in more regions because of climate change.  I am personally interested in funding research to grow more of the Chinese fruits and vegetables that are not available in the US. They have 5000 yrs of food cultuvars that we don't have and if they can come up with a spring flowering loquat we need it here.
