Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Hunt for the best Surinam Cherry
« on: June 07, 2021, 10:10:49 AM »
Has anyone here tried top working and unproductive or undesirable plant? I have two that are shy bearers and that don't taste very good.

502
Yellow and with seeds. I buy my seeds online.

503
I have had a few experiences that make me lean toward the tree that has fruit and the one that has not. One would be the trees that I have bought that have been duds. Anything that takes more than 5 years to fruit is not what I am interested in. I think almost anybody who buys fruit trees wants to eat fruit. What I have seen is if the plant is already fruiting you at least know it will not make you wait too long. The other thing is cultivar. I have had someplants labeled as "red" but there in fact "green".

504
Plant them.

Ok, since you are growing in pits, why be so aggressive?  If they NEED to be uppotted, than so be it but maybe select trees, when possible, that are not at that stage.  A smaller tree that does not require instant uppotting will be a healthier tree in the long run.

As for spraying chemicals,  if the tree gas pests or disease, then again, so be it.. but, as with the tree size, why select trees that are coming with these issues?
In general I try to pick the trees I buy on a few factors:
  • Vigor
  • Caliper size of the trunk
  • Is it already fruiting in the pot
The issues with bugs is that I don't want to transport anything new my state and I know I have checked for bugs that I didn't find until I got back home. I use a fungicide because of issues I have had before. I haven't seen any ill effects.

I wish I could plant them all but I am growing things outside of zone. I sacrificed a white sapote last year. Tangerines survived the North Carolina winter. Mr Sapote bit the dust. The next thing that will be tested is an avocado and a Cherry of the Rio Grande.

505
Does anybody else un-stake their plants? I usually un-stake anything that doesn't seem to need it.

506
Most of my plant are in pots so I wanted to ask other forum members what there regimen was in hopes of gaining knowledge.

I usually repot the plant to a larger potsize and spray for bugs. When I was buying plants from a particular nursery I would always spray with fungicide because everything  I brought back from them ended up with fungus.

507
It's been a long time and I don't remember the website but I am sure if you search you will find it. I believe the place was in Belgium or France.

508
I don't see any signs of the erinose mites.  Tree needs some general TLC.  Keep it watered well and if need be, drench with a Miracle Grow liquid fert to help it get going.  Dont let it dry out.

If it did have the erinose mites, you should sure as hell return it and report to USDA but from what I can see, its not the case here.  Just a somewhat neglected tree.

Hey when you say "drench" What do you mean? You mean like with the kind that goes in a hose sprayer or do you mean mix it up in a bucket and poor it over? What concentration do you suggest?

509
Did the plant look like that when you bought it or was this a one day steep decline?

510
Yep. He's a nice guy. I am looking for an already planted tree.

511
Does anybody know an online seller with kerajis?

512
I think I will pass. Their website has some roll the dice prices but they didn't really have all I wanted. For some reason you cannot get those varieties in Florida. I will take my own advice and take a trip to the west coast.

513
Looks like nobody has bout from him. Roll the dice on $100 fruit fiend habit or not?

514
Man......I royally screwed up. It was Mr Brittain from Nolin that passed away. Cliff is alive and kicking. I have to man up and take my lumps. I apologized to him and I apologize to all of you as well.

Well, he said they got some huk kam wood but it was in not good condition. He will contact me if he gets some grafted up.

515
Has anybody purchased from this person? They have a perfume wax apple that I am curious about.

Cotoperiz have good taste but very thin pulp. The real Sasa have good taste, the pulp removes very easy. Quenepas can be harvest in dry or wet climate. Lara Farms have grafted trees .
This is nursery that I have not visited. How well stocked are they? I have been wanting to visit but I wasn't sure if the sold to the public and what they stocked. I actually wanted to buy some caimito from then since I saw their video.

My questions are:

Can I grow them in a container?
How low a temp can they take?

518
Excuse me for not understanding but what are the dwarfing root stocks are you all using and where are you getting them from?

Better safe than sorry. Call a professional to get them removed without killing them if you have the money.

I'm a Zone 7a/7b grower and I have been looking for the same cultivars. I think Rose Anne is unavailable in the US. Big Plant nursery is the only place I have seen it available and it is in the UK.

How many psyllids does it take to infect a tree with HLB?  One bite from 1 psyllid? Or does it take numerous psyllids to infect a tree?
Ok, so what are the beneficial insects? Are they available for purchase?

Nope, you need a pollinator plant. You just need bees. I have 8 varieties I started off with 3. I have not seen any difference in yields
except when using more irrigation, more fertilizer or having more bees. Bees make all the difference.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Should I Buy Fruit Trees Online?
« on: May 17, 2021, 11:24:41 AM »
If you are a true plant and fruit addict, you will buy from many sources. No one has everything. If I can't find local or through my friends and connections, online vendors and even eBay and Etsy have worked out nicely. Do your homework.

If you come down this way, would recommend PIN and Al's Fruit Trees.
I remember visiting PIN in the mid to late 2000's an it seemed like they had every thing on their website in stock. Excalibur used to be same way in terms of inventory. The four times I visited or called PIN  in the last 5 years they didn't seem to have much of anything except the most common of common's like mangoes. What is their inventory looking like nowadays?

Like I said, if it is at all possible, take the trip.

Late reply I know. If it is a lie then someone claiming to be his daughter told it. She called me to tell me that they wouldn't be able to send me  the plants I was looking for.  If he's alive: praise God and I apologize for misinforming anyone. I will be calling Monday to verify.
