Which root stock do you think is most vigorous.

Both Californica and Cerifera are very vigorous but I would say Cerifera has the edge on vigor. Californica doesn’t sucker for me so all the growth goes into the scion. Cerifera suckers like crazy from beneath the graft and also from the roots so the growth is spread around the suckers if you’re not careful.

Calmei is growing just a few miles from me in a zone 9b location with some frost. I hope they do direct sales there but probably not.

Did they just prune? What's all that green near the plants? Is that pruning scraps or weeds or what?

I think they were grafting the in ground plants. There are some wrapped scions in the picture and the previous story had mentioned grafting.

Kevin, just go visit them and convince the guy to sell you a large fruiting tree. I think I may need to do that so I can get fruits much faster.

It seems like more and more people are succeeding with growing seedlings. What is your method of growing them.

I picked up a seedling from Nate @ Wildlands Farm a few years ago and it doubles in size every year. I managed to kill the four I did get to germinate but I think that's because they don't like to be separated once they send out that tap root. Got another batch of seeds I just finished cold stratifying that ill plant in their own trays this time

My friend bought some Yangmei seeds online and opened the seeds manually and got them growing pretty fast. I haven’t spoke with to update but he said almost all of them sprouted.

I bought fresh yang mei and planted the seed without opening. They germinated without issue.

Planted it in July 2024. First noticed growth in January. My mini green house has automated irrigation, so i just planted and never noticed until January. Have about 15 seedlings i just repotted and left it out of the green house.

What's the general consenus on cold hardiness for Yangmei? I'm thinking whether I should plant a 3 year old Dongkui in the ground or keep it in a pot. Once a year it gets down to -10°C or so here in 8a... any opinions?

I would say you are on the cusp of planting it out.
I've had dongkui take around that temps with some leaf burn
And had it survive in colder temps...
but I would advise trying to protect it when it drops below 20f for the first few years.

I just notice this little white thing poking out  today. Is it the yangmei root? I didn't expect to see it poking out so soon.  should I up pot it now?  I only have it for 6 weeks. The tree not even growing that much yet.

Yes, that is a root. I don't think you will need to pot it up until you have significantly more leaves.
