First year fertilizing my mangoes
« on: October 25, 2023, 12:25:10 AM »
This is my first year with my mango trees. They haven’t been fertilized since I got them a few months ago. They came in 25 gallon pots and I just now put them into 65 gallons. Fairly sure they’re gonna flower within the next couple months so I wanna take care of them ahead of time. All the guides I’ve seen are either for in ground mangoes or very non specific/for smaller trees. Any help is appreciated as well as specific brands/products because I have nothing at the moment. Thank you.

I am slowing becoming expert at killing containerized mango trees. I can’t say I know what makes them grow best, but I do know how to kill them. For years my mangos had brown tips, then I started using “distilled water” from my dehumidifier with a very dilute organic liquid fertilizer. The fertigation solution is usually under 250ppm, and I water them weekly. The other thing in containers is drainage. I have my “usual”  citrus blend and then mix it 2:1 with Perilite, and put it in the tallest ceramic pot that fits the circumference of the rootball. I also put the mango pots on top of my containerized passionfruit and only size up the pots when I see roots growing out the bottom. In the past I potted up too soon and the would roots rot. Even with these protocols my Alphonso mango just spontaneously died last year. Florigon, Pickering, and Valencia pride have all worked well in pots for me.

I put them in a 1:1 mix of a good quality potting mix and bags of 50/50 sand and Florida topsoil (pretty much sand). It drains pretty well so far and has a very sandy texture. I hope I didn’t transplant them too early as the roots hadn’t yet come out of the bottom. Since they’re outdoors in Florida I don’t think watering them is a great idea. I’m just gonna get some granulated 0-0-60 or something like that and see how it goes. It would really suck if I overdosed them

Did you mean 0-0-50?

I read somplace not to use 0-0-60 with mango because of the salt but instead to use 0-0-50, yes they are different.

Check to confirm what you are using.  You want sulfate of potash (K2SO4) not Muriate of Potash (Potassium Chloride)

Spot on! I also messaged Lara farms and they said to use 0-0-22 with 1 tbsp per foot of tree height. Going with Lara’s recommendation as the trees came in perfect condition. Maybe once I get them in the ground I’ll use the sulfate of potash
