I haven't tried to root the Sylvia guava yet so I will do some now. Hope to see something grow in a month. Been so busy grafting other fruit tree scion wood.

What's your method for rooting guava?

Ok, this is not related to the Sylvia guava, but it is my other rooted guava that is growing well so I'll post some updaed photo of the Honeymoon variegated guava cutting that I rooted.

I have 3 cuttings that rooted in these pots. i do notice that these variegated leaves are very sensitive to the sun so it needs to keep in partial shade or they start to burn.

Those don't look like a Honeymoon variegated guava I know.  How does the fruit look like?

Oh, that's even better. I never had the Honeymoon guava, so when I asked the guy who has the large tree he said yes. Maybe he didn't hear me when i asked him the question of variety.

So what is the inside flesh color of the Honeymoon guava?

When this one fruits I will let you know. I thought the guy said his fruit was pink inside. There were no fruits on the tree when I took these cuttings.

I also have another variegated guava that I have cuttings. That one does not have pink flesh, they told me it was yellow, taste was average, not excellent. I'm rooting and grafting that one as well. Seems these tropical guavas are much easier to root than to graft.

If you have a photo of your Honeymoon guava tree and fruits, please post a few photos.

TopTropicals sold them in the past. The fruits are variegated and are pink inside, quite tasty. The guy that you got your cuttings from probably didn't know the variety name, so when you said Honeymoon variegated,  he just agreed.
I can't upload the pictures by some reasons. I will try again later from my computer. Maybe it's a phone issue.

Yeah, this forum doesn't let you just upload images or attachments.

What I do is use one of the host image website like "postimage" (free), then you need to copy the "hotlink for forum" and paste it in your post here.

Thought this one was dead. I guess I thought wrong. I think it's taking at the very bottom on the v. I'm new to grafting
What do you think? Is it taking? Should I try redoing it?

Galka, thank for posting the real Honeymoon Guava tree photo. Very nice, the variegation on the leaves is very uniform.

Here's the update on the Sylvia guava seeds.

If anyone has germinated guava seeds and successfully got them to grow as plants, please provide your comments on what I should do next.

The first photos are the seedlings in the smaller plastic container. These look like they are ready to go outside. My plan is to put them in a larger community pot and let them grow until 6 inches tall before separating each one. What do you think?

The second photos are the seedlings that were much slower to germinate than the smaller container seeds. This larger container has over 200 seeds so it should start to grow and be very crowed in there. I'll leave it indoors until the seedlings grow to about the size of the larger ones in the small container.

So, has anyone grown seeds of guavas, or got their seeds of the Sylvia guava growing now?

If you have, then can you give me some advice on the best way for me to move these seedlings shown above from this container to a pot and when is a good time to put these seedlings outside in the shade?

So it looks like the easiest way to grow these tropical guava is to just root them. Here's another cuttings from last year that I just stuck in one of my pots and it seems to be growing well.

Now, I plan to just get some fresh cuttings of the Sylva guava and root it. It takes about 3-5 months before you will notice much leaves. I didn't even realize this variegated cutting was growing until it had full leaves since I have so many plants in pots.

Did anyone get the Sylvia guava cuttings or seedlings to grow? Please post your progress with any photos.

I have many seedlings still growing but they are slowly dying out so not sure how many will survive. I will try to move some seedlings outside (in shade). I have some seeds left so I will plant each one in its own seed grow plastic container from Home Depot. Johnny tells me that is how I need to grow the seeds.

I did not get any grafts to take, been too busy and not really had time to graft many. Also didn't have much time to try and root these. I will be going to the house where the mother tree is and check on my air layers.

Just wanted to follow up on your seedlings or rooted/grafted Syliva guava cuttings.

Was anyone able to get the seeds to germinate and actually grow out, all my hundreds that germinated eventually dried up and died, I didn't take good care of it.

Anyone have a rooted Sylvia guava now, please post a photo of your rooted cutting if it is doing well. Also, if anyone was successful in grafting it, please update status here, and any photos of your grafted tree.

I did not have much time to do any grafts and my attempt at rooting the cuttings failed so I will need to try it again when I get a better mini-greenhouse setup completed.

I will be going back to check on the mother tree to see if any of my air layers worked or not.

I wanted a Sylvia guava so much. All the Sylvia grafting efforts were a dismal failure. The grafts stayed green for a month or so, which gave me such high hope that they’ll take. But one by one, the grafts eventually shriveled and dried up. They were much harder to graft than I had initially anticipated. Some highly experience master grafters should try to get a hold of those cuttings and try to preserve its genetic, IMHO...

Initially the graft looked good with a couple of new leaves. But they dried in the Florida heat. Will try to graft again if scions are available.

ok, I will know in a few weeks how the tree is doing after the last haircut. If it recovered with plenty of branches, then I may be able to do one more cutting in November. Otherwise, it will be next spring. Sales of these cuttings will be prioritized to those who already purchased them before. I will be rooting/grafting a few for myself this month so I should know if it is easy or not. When I graft guavas, I get about 10% success rate, similar to lychee grafting.

Exactly the same happened to my grafts. So sad.
I planted a few seeds , one is growing.  The other ones died off.

My last hope on a successful graft has been crushed. I just confirmed a couple days ago that it is indeed toast and I have remove it. All I have now are seedlings. It appears that guava is indeed quite hard to graft.

I had the same experience as you guys. One by one the grafts shrivelled and died. Guava is the hardest fruit to graft I've ever experienced by far.

Could be one of the reasons why many trees from guava varieties for sale tend to be air layered...
