A Brand New Mamey Hits the Books!
« on: April 08, 2025, 09:06:03 PM »
Hey guys, so you know how last summer we found the G-1, G-2, and G-3 mameys planted by Dr. Jonathan Crane at TREC that finally fruited after almost a couple decades...and the fruits were really amazing, tastewise some of the best ones out there... I like G-3 a lot I'll add a picture too
Well, my good friend Xain found the fourth tree starting to fruit!

What makes this one special? It has tiny fruits! This is perfect for northern growers that can't wait 1-2 years for fruits to mature from flower.
I bet if we timed this flowering early spring we could get fruits in late fall.

Xain also says this one tastes really great too.

Funny how these trees were planted a long time ago, and we are now finally blessed with some S-tier cultivars.

Very cool! Do you know how large the tree is at TREC? Is it also smaller/dwarf like the fruit?

They don't taste like pumpkin or sweet potatoes? It seems like it would have that "vegetable" since it has high amounts or betacarotene. How small is small? I learned that there are some softball to baseball sized varieties. Those would interest me. Two last questions. Why would the size influence the amount of time it takes to ripen? When are we planning in the road trip!?!?! 8) 8) 8)

Nope no vegetables or pumpkin or sweet potato…that’s the biggest downside I have with some pouteria fruits like canistel (some may argue I haven’t had a good one idk)but I can say the G-3 mamey I had was very good
Smaller size is quicker ripening time less volume to grow
The big ones bigger than football are over 18 months
Something small like this we can maybe see around 8 months if lucky I’m just guessing but I think less than a year
Feel free to stop by after May 8 I’ll get you some cool stuff

Any basis for the 8 month fruiting assumption?

Yes just the smaller size…I was talking with xain, and that he said it’ll be pretty quick probably under a year. (For the G-3)
For the G-4 with even smaller size I don’t see why not, of course these are new varieties so I can’t be certain until we see

The tree is more compact, but not dwarf according to xain also.
