Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chemical or Organic Growing and Fruit Taste
« on: September 10, 2021, 08:54:11 AM »
This is a thread to start a conversation, hopefully not a war, on how chemical or organic/biological fertilizers/pesticides may impact the taste of fruit.

If two genetically identical plants have the full availability of the elements (water, micros/macros) they need, will the flavor be the same or are there other biological factors that impact fruit taste?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Forcing Surinam Cherry to fruit
« on: August 06, 2021, 09:57:00 PM »
I have been trying to air layer my favorite Surinam Cherry, it has nice sized sweet fruits. The air layer was a failure, but all the branches that had their outer bark removed are now flowering, which has never happened before. Anyone else have this experience? I also had the same thing happen to my pitangatuba, but not sure if pitangatuba just gets multiple crops per year since this is the first year i've fruited my pitangatubas.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Zeolite Amendment for Sandy Soils
« on: May 13, 2021, 02:50:43 PM »
Most people with sandy soils should know that their biggest challenges with working in sandy soils is low water retention and nutrient storage (low CEC). I have experimented with using kitty litter (bentonite) in my sandy soil with great results, and now would like to expand to my tree area. One negative I will say is that when I added to just the top of my soil, no tilling, I could get a slimmy top layer until enough time has passed to allow soil critters to work it into the soil (1+ year in some cases).

I'm thinking about using Zeolite because of it's high CEC, 100-140 milliequivalents/g, where some Georgia red clays can be 5-10 milliequivalents/g, so if I'm going to pay to have a large quantity (1 ton per acres as recommended by zeolite supplier), I might as well get a high CEC product. I've found mines in Idaho and Nevada with prices around $300 to $350/ton, and shipping around $600-800. 1 truck can haul about 21 super sacks (1 ton).

Does anyone have any experience with using clays in sandy soil?

I know people say mixing clay and sand is like making concrete, but haven't found this to be the case especially if you have a reasonable amount of organic matter in your soils.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Surinam Cherry
« on: April 01, 2021, 07:41:15 PM »
Hello all, this is my first post here. This is fruiting now in Broward County, some people hate their astringent taste, but after sharing with the office, a few agree its an acquired taste.

More on the ground at this point

The last one is perfect. I get more small cherries when they are in shade and bigger, juicier, sweeter when they are in full sun.
