Temperate Fruit Discussion / Vitis californica and Vitis girdiana
« on: January 11, 2024, 08:01:27 AM »
I was wondering how taste these two grapes : Vitis californica and Vitis girdiana ?
I know that most wild grapes are known to be sour, seedy,..    but maybe these species have some undertones of ..   ?   Don't hesitate to share your opinion on this : If you cultivate them ? Use them as rootstock ? Collect them in wild to make jam, juice,..   ?

Hi all an Happy New Year :)

I am looking for some pure Vitis californica and/or its hybrids seeds or cuttings.  I wasn't been able to find any source to get this species here, in Europe.
By the way, don't hesitate your anecdote, little story about this species ( taste of its grapes, place where it can thrive, its growth rate, medicinal uses,..   ) because I found very little informations about this grape vine compare to V. labrusca, V. riparia,..     that also have been extensively used to make interspecific hybrids.

Thanks !

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Capsicum flexuosum seeds to sell
« on: July 31, 2022, 11:35:25 AM »
Hi :)

It is the 2nd year for my 2 Capsicum flexuosum plants. They coped with our last winter very well ( -5 Celsius max. and some days with constant negative temps ), and now they bloom heavily since this spring, and set fruits ( last year I just get 5 fruits..   ). So, I decided to offer seeds of this easy, cold hardy chili pepper.

My price for 20 fresh seeds : 6 euros
Plus shipping cost : about 5 euros for a tracking mail up to 20gr

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passiflora 'Snow Queen' fruits
« on: July 15, 2022, 12:55:42 PM »
Hi :)

Last year I planted two cuttings of Passiflora 'Snow Queen' they grew so fast and they bloomed profusely. I was a bit surprised to see it setting fruits ( there are some P. caerulea in the neighborhood ). I couldn't resist to taste a fruit..  and I was very surprised by its sweetness..  it reminded me a bit P. laurifolia I have tasted  oO
Anyone ever tried to grab one of these fruits from this variety ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Identification..
« on: January 31, 2022, 07:03:32 AM »
Hi :)

I need you, to help me to identify this fruit that had been gathered in Guadeloupe ( West indies ). Someone there, a local, tell me that it was " Gros Café"  ( in English, literally : Big Coffee ).
Inside, beneath the orange/red skin, there is a single seed, that doesn't much look like a coffee bean..     But the tree, its foliage, the disposition of the branches,..  made me, automatically think about a Coffea at the first sight, then I doubted, and that's a reason I ask you : According to you, what it is ?

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Sechium edule dark skin variety
« on: December 29, 2021, 08:56:06 AM »
Bonjour :)

Recently, going to the supermarket, I spot some Sechium edule with darker skin that I use to see in grocery ( and even in some gardens ). Does anyone know what are differencies between dark and light skin varieties ?  ( Taste ? Amidon content ? Ability to grow in dry/wet soil ?  ..   )

Additional informations : The ones I bought were from Costa Rica. And the embryo seems smaller that the ones on commonly seen varieties - it starts to grow, that's the reason I can tell it looks smaller.

I cannot be more explicit than the title. I found, three years ago now, two seeds in a pomelo 'Sweetie' ( aka 'Oroblanco' if it's exactly the same ).
I was wondering how it could be possible since it's a triploid variety (?)
And if my plant ( I could just keep one, other died prematurely ) will give the same fruit that the seeds came from ?

Any information, based on experiences, about this variety ( Oroblanco ) interest me.

PS : I don't have a picture showing my plant from this seed, but I will add it  later, if it can be useful.

Hi !
Here I come to exchange my chili peppers 'Espelette' against cold hardy Chiltepin seeds ( Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum ) - seeds from plants that grow in cold winter area and which grow back after cold spell, snow,..
Or against Peritoma arborea, Salvia clevelandii, Justicia californica,..   seeds.

Here is the 'Espelette' Chili peppers ( an old heirloom variety from Basque country, easy to dry out and hang them - you can see many images on Google about that.

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Chiletepin
« on: September 30, 2021, 05:07:57 PM »
Hi,

I start this post to know more about Chiletepin ( Capsicum annum var. glabriusculum )
I have three plant of this variety, and I don't really understand what it likes : I have a plant in full sun that does not grow..   an other beneath shade of taller plants, it grows but doesn't flower, and the last is in pot in semi shade, it grows, but is a shy bloomer..   and all my three plants have +1 year.
I thought it could set thousands of fruits, as considered as a weed sometimes, but in reality, it's the fussiest chili pepper that I have grown. ( In comparaison my Capsicum praetermissum in a neglected pot, produces many fruits )

How do you grow them  ?  Do they are frost hardy ? ( Do they really regrow )

Thanks,

Vincent

Hi,

Just two photos to introduce this particular species which is say to be able to resist to temps below freezing ( -10 °C and more ).
This year will be their ( I have two plants)  first year outdoor, sure it will be fine, but still a bit anxious: they are Capsicum after all (!)
Like others wild Capsicum species, it took time to set fruits ( more than a year ), and my other plant have done nothing - I noticed that Capsicum flexuosum dislike our full sun, and prefer filter sun, or a good shade, and maybe that's the reason why the second plant, more exposed didn't set any flower.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado tree in 8b zone
« on: September 11, 2021, 10:51:11 AM »
Hi,

I visited an avocado tree that I know for few years now, and it is gorgeous, so I wanted to share a photo.
There is no avocados on the tree, but it usually sets fruits ( pear shape, with a not so smooth skin ).

Ps : it thrives in a shelter place, and to give a scale, the fence is at least 2 meters high.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Red avocado variety..
« on: August 27, 2021, 11:37:42 AM »
Hi everyone,

I noticed a bright red avocado in tree during my walk, then I decided to see if I found any beneath the tree, among the vegetation.. And I got one !
My enthousiasm is not due to the fact of it's red, but rather I think it could be more cold hardy than the others we commonly find around here in Island of Guadeloupe.

Am I wrong to think it's more cold hardy than the others because it's smaller and red ?

Thanks in advance for your point of view.

Hi,

I live in France, in an area where grapes and vineyards are everywhere. However, it still quite all the same varieties and it's quite boring when you want something that is out of these standard grapes  ( they are good, sugary,..   but the taste is nothing to compare to a Concord or Noah grapes varieties - I have already taste one these varieties and I fall in love about the complexity of the aroma )

I am waiting for your suggestions about what are your favorite grapes varieties ? Why ? ( it can be about the taste or about the cultivation requirements of the vines, or any other thing )

Thanks,

Vincent
