Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Casimiroa pringlei

Silversapote, my leaves look more like gregeii than pringlei  as well. Maybe a maturity issue? I don't protect mine from Sun or heat at all, unlike several other plants I try to grow. Give it some water and it's good. D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Casimiroa pringlei
« on: March 28, 2021, 07:21:11 AM »
There was discussion of pringle's sapote being cold hardy a while back. The best known tree was in Houston, at a nursery. It was said to have endured 13°F. That was a mature tree.
I have a small one planted in S. Texas. It is on a ridge, exposed to whatever comes. In our last taste of "real" Winter, the 3 foot seedling was exposed to close to single digits with just a small frame over it. I had rigged heat lamps, but as was widely reported, we had no power for about 5 days due to blackouts and a power pole down close by.
I thought it was toast, just like our citrus, but it is putting out new growth! More evidence that they are quite cold hardy.

From what I have been told and seen in my own trees, apples can produce fruit in much lower chill hours than would be ideal for them. They basically become indeterminate and produce several small flushes of fruit throughout the year. D

Hi Derek, I can send you a bunch of cuttings in a few weeks. I need to train my apples. I have the usual suspects, anna, ein shemer etc. Do you have plums? I need to cut them back as well. D

The post office delivered my plants to the wrong address....but four days later they showed up and I can't be more pleased! They were packaged very well and did fine in their extended travels. Thanks to Evan's attention to detail all is well. Thanks Dan.

I can only tell from their flowers. The male flowers hang like a bell and the female flowers are upright. D

184
Looks like they are self pollinating. Pm sent. D

185
Are these self pollinating?

Pm sent.

In Southern Texas a paw paw seed that was planted out and not given supplemental water wouldn't make it a year. They need nurturing in this climate. D

I have arbequinas a couple of hours North of you. They are about 4 feet tall and one just started fruiting this year. There is a nursery called Sandy Oaks South of San Antonio that specializes in olives. They probably have 2000 trees. You might call them. D

Hi Mike, If you mean me, I have plenty of room, but that term would be correct if not! D

Hi Giannhs, Jonah ships about 8" long cuttings. Just stick them in some soil maybe 1 /3 their length deep and water in. They root very easily. D

Hi PJ, I believe these are used in ayurvedic healing for blood sugar levels. If you know someone with diabetic issues. D

Thanks for the info PJ! Looks like I'll have to try it! Dan

About 20 years ago we had a heat wave and got to 115F for several days. It was not pleasant. That was with our regular 90ish % humidity. Normal Summers we are in the high 90s most of the time. The coldest I've experienced here was about 14° for several days about 30 years ago. Normally we only get a few days in the high 20s F. D

197
Hi PJ, so their tree is in the ground? Is it in a micro climate? Shielded from North or West? Or just out in the open? Thanks, D

Pm'd. D

Derek, I had been getting these from a friend in Central Texas. Not this year though. These are slow growing and maturing small trees. I have a male that has been flowering for several years, but until last year no female mature enough. Last spring another set a few flowers, but didn't hold them. It is a female, so I might get some fruit this coming spring. I'll send out seeds if I get any. D
