We have 3 fiejoas in the ground that endured 9°F for close to 4 days with steady 15 or so mph wind most of the time. No damage. They are tough. D

paw paw, filberts various sumacs.

I did a search and we get about 10° hotter in Summer and 10° colder in Winter. You are correct sir! D

80
loquat should make a good wine. If you put pits in vodka for about 6 months it will taste like cherry liquor.

I'm in 9a. Bad Winter will kill it. Normal one they will survive.

82
Hi Derek, Will these come back from the roots if the freeze?

83
Why not. Can you have enough yams? I'll buy 10 large. Regards, Dan

Over here between all of you in S. Tx we just keep hoping to avoid really bad freezes like 2021. In a normal year we get a few dips into the high '20s. First time in the high '30s for the Winter this morning. D

I protect all the small seedlings. Jabos with a couple of years growth will be fine as will the persimmons. D

Thank for the input. The ornamental ones that are naturalized in the yard have yellow flowers and the edulis have smaller red flowers. Should I assume any with yellow flowers are inedible? D

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Canna edulis stalk color

I have been growing these for a few years. I also have ornamental cannas in the yard. The original edulis have red stalks. I've collected their seed and propagated them. I now have cannas that have green stalks like the ornamental ones growing in some of the pots. Could these be edulis, just with green stalks or maybe a hybrid? Should they still be edible? Thanks! D

Hi Greg, I have acreage, so I could grow out a large test plot in S. Tx. If the farm hasn't been razed yet and you still have access to the material I could be a backup source. D

I think that is the one I got from them. I should say I got about 6 and 1 survived. It is lanky, and fewer leaves than I expected. I'm in 9a. You should probably give it afternoon shade and keep it out of the wind. Might be doable. D

I tried luma apiculata, but they don't like the heat down here. Glad to hear about mountain guava. They do fine here. Your adventure  continues! D

Others have sent me plant material as well and not accepted any kind of payment, (thank you again) so it's not that uncommon. D

I have given away seeds and eaten the postage. I did it last week. I would prefer to trade, but if someone is just starting out they may not have anything worth while. I also have issues with PayPal etc. They require too much info and what do they really do with it?
Asifh, I don't have any tropical seed right now, but may have some jujube seeds. That would have a better chance in your area anyway.

My ein shemer ripened over 100 apples through July. The temperature was over 90F everyday, and over 100F most days.

97
We had 2 producing ein shemers, but a hurricane pushed 1 over. The survivor flushes probably 100+ fruit a couple of times a year. We also have anna, golden dorsett and several other varieties from the grower in Cali that I mentioned. All too small to produce yet. The win shemer seems to trigger when drought breaks or some other weather event occurs.

98
Apples will produce fruit without chilling hours. They put on multiple light flushes of growth typically after a rain or a weather event. I'm in 9a and have an apple that produces. There is a guy on another forum that sponsors a productive apple orchard in Kenya? D
