Title: Anyone else have Peanut Butter Fruit now?
Post by: fliptop on December 08, 2020, 08:00:57 PM
I had thought they were more of a summer fruit? Happy to have this bunch ripening. The upper 30s/low 40s from a week or so ago didn't seem to affect them, and I'm hoping the ~40 temperature tonight doesn't harm the fruit so close to being ripe.

My two trees are just finishing up fruiting also. The past 3 years my trees seem to
start late around July and fruit until December or January

And the cold doesn't damage the fruit? The tree is a seedling from seeds I got from you

I ate 4 fruit yesterday and they were fine.

another couple cold nights coming

I have two trees that I am not impressed with enough to keep. Might be good as a tree to keep animals from more desirable fruit but I just don't think the fruit is good enough for the limited space I have. It is an attractive looking plant that grows well even in my poor soil. Both are small enough to dig and move if anyone wants them free...

I feel the same way about mine. I will say this though. The tree seems bullet proof. I stress tested the hell out of it and it passed with flying colors. No water for two weeks. No heat when the temps were in the upper 30's for a week. No light for a month other than indirect light that came through a small window 3 hours a day. Mine does not taste like peanut butter and it is only mildly sweet.

Carolina, plants need sunlight to produce sugar. Depriving it of light will always result in bland fruit. That's why commercial growers try to get as much sunlight as possible. But it's nice that the plant can survive such conditions.
