Awesome, sounds interesting! Would you be interested in trading any scion?

They also list Babaco Papaya but have Vasconcellea pubescens as the photo.  I've asked them about this and that their plants look like seedling V. pubescens. They said they are tissue cultured Babaco. Has anyone heard of Babaco being TC'd and distributed by anyone? Always wondered.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yangmei (Morella/Myrica rubra) thread

Just dug up some seedlings to transplant them to a wider spacing. I had about 10 seedlings i planted at 6' apart, lost 3 but the 7 have been growing incredibly fast.  After seeing people talk about them being huge i wanted to make my spacing more in line with the rest of my yangmei block, about 10' spacing. Not very many roots in the top 6-8" of soil and lots of large roots with fibrous roots coming straight down off the bottom of the plant. We'll see how they recover. Plants are about 2.5-3' tall. Was fun to do in terms of learning what their roots are like. Very little gopher activity around these lower roots.

Hey Kevin, have you tried various different seedlings? I have about 10 and have found one to be somewhat sweeter and less tart, but not sure how sweet, sweet really is. Is yours tart at all? Thank you!

I have what was often referred to as lutescens x pyriformis but I believe they are just pyriformis.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone growing out Mouriri?

I've been wanting to grow more from this genus. A super interesting member of the Melastomataceae family! They look beautiful and super delicious. I've grown seedlings but always seem to get them germinated and can never keep them alive. I bought some seedlings from bellamy and they have been doing great. Probably a bout 8-10" tall. Just moved em out of my grow room and into a hoop house from 4" to 1gallon. Hopefully these do well for me!

I bought a box of those ones I posted and got em in an Aglis Box. I prefer non-perforated honestly, especially when its almost 50% more for perforated. Dang!

9
Haha glad they eventually made it to you! They definitely seem to last longer bagged up when they are wrapped, seems they are quite prone to desiccation.

Hope they take and hopefully I'll have some scions of the Chinese varieties sometime in the next couple years. Hoping this is the year my plants really take off after getting established.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Issues With Eugenias Post-Sprouting

Could be issues with being over or under watered. I have that happen sometimes but they always resprout and take off

damg those do look awesome kevin

Dang!! Those look like honkin' lucumas to me

Is to possible for the scions to be rooted instead of grafted?

I can't speak to that, I think the take rates would be very low. Maybe Matthias Thomas has rooted them? I know its not commonly done

13
These are scions from plants I got from Far Reaches Farm, they are about 4 or 5 years old! Glad to hear the plants are growing well! Mine from that batch are about 2.5' and super bushy. They've definitely been outperforming all my other Yangmei plants

14
What can it be grafted onto besides itself? I remember people testing other ‘rootstocks’ but don’t think I ever found out if any were compatible
They can be grafted onto a number of Myrica species with some species having better take rates supposedly. I think a lot of people are using Myrica cerifera but I have been grafting all of mine onto Myrica californica. I am in M. californica's native range and have some big trees on my farm that have grown in the past ~50 years.  I'm gonna try Myrica cerifera sometime soon though.

Thats the impression im getting too, with the boosting in cold weather and being stressed in the hottest times of the year.  I sold some to a guy who lives in the redwoods, an old clear cut that is second growth forest, and he has very rich soil. The plants are doing pretty amazing for him and he has multiple seedlings flowering. I think he'll probably be one of the first to fruit it in California. Seems like they enjoy the low intensity light up at his spot.  Wish I had more of that around my area.

Anywhere in the US one can buy Yangmei trees?  Tried group order, all died.  Asked friends to buy in China as experiments, either dead on arrival or died after a few weeks.  Don't quite trust international order.

I just grafted a bunch of trees up and hope to have some available later this year. I'll also have seedlings for sale on my website, www.wildlandsplants.com. I'm based out of Santa Cruz, so just over the hill from ya.

The plants are actually still photosynthesizing but doing so in a different spectrum, them not being green helps them photosynthesize less which helps to protect new growth!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Coco coir as seed starter?!

I use straight washed coco coir in sealed containers until seeds germinate and move them into a potting medium post germination.

Anyone growing the Pink and/or White Tropical Guavas sold by Four Winds Growers? I’m growing both of these in pots and am curious if people like these fruits. I’m thinking of planting them in ground the Spring.

Tropical guavas are tricky for us in northern califonria because the fruits are ripening in our coldest and wettest months.  I have not had a good tropical guava that is grown outdoors in the ground, they just turn out flavorless and watery. Maybe if we get a drought year, there is potential for good ripening conditions. At this point, I think the only way to do tropical guavas will be potted or in the ground in a hoop house where conditions can be controlled a little more. My farm is right above 4 winds growers too, haha.

Truthfully have a hard time trusting ID's unless its from a source that has background in botany/systematics.  I think there's a lot of people in the fruit world that are basing IDs on sight alone whereas it is a much more complicated process than that. I.e. a lot of the psidiums that have gone around/are in my collection have very dubious ID's

I've got some seedlings available. Will be posting up the sweet variant in the next couple of weeks. The sweet is just slightly less sour than the sour variant.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pouteria lucuma
« on: January 17, 2024, 09:53:12 PM »
I got rid of my lucuma.  Too sweet.  Fruits hang 1 year.

I also got rid of canistel.  Have lot flowers, but not fruits over a decade.

If I feel like eating them, I go get purple yam and steam.  Taste very simular.

haha wild! Well i guess thats good to hear though, hopefully the fruit can take our colder wetter winters up here on the northern end of the central coast.
