Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Guangdong Lychee Varieties
« on: December 06, 2020, 03:53:05 PM »
@Mike T. Ah, I didn’t know these were the same! I’m surprised to hear that since it seems to be highly regarded in its region of origin. Perhaps the fruit quality changes outside of their native climate.

Regarding 仙进奉, it looks to be a result of a breeding program by the Xiancun Agriculture Office in Zengcheng District, Guangdong Province. I haven’t found any English synonyms for the variety.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guangdong Lychee Varieties

We all know about No Mai Tsze (糯米糍)but has anyone sampled/grown the other popular varieties from Guangdong/Fujian?

  • Gui Wei(桂味)- Supposedly has floral osmanthus and cinnamon notes. Superior to No Mai Tsze1
  • Xian Jin Feng (仙进奉) - Almost twice as large as top-tier Guangdong varieties2 with excellent flavor
  • Gua Liu (挂绿)- “Hanging green” Incredibly rare, reported to be the best tasting, some fruit recently sold at auction for $85,000!!3

Here in San Diego 10a we've been averaging high 40's at night. My Garcinia seedlings (Intermedia, Brasiliensis, Achachairu, and Luc's) have all been happy enough outside without protection. Some of them have even continued to push out new growth.

If it gets much cooler I will need to bring them inside with their more tropical brethren. Not saying this is great practice, but just another data point to consider.

Hi Brad,

My wife and I would love to attend. Is there anything we can bring, stuff for mimosas maybe?

Last bump. Does anyone have some they would be interested in selling? I am happy to pay a premium.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: exotica site
« on: April 20, 2020, 08:45:38 PM »
Excuse me, may i have a link for that exotica site? Searching the web, i found only an exotica named nursery in Australia, specializing in Nepenthes only.

Did you contact the buyer prior to make the payment to see if he would ship a plant from Poland to the US?

There is a tempting offer here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Passiflora-ligularis-grenadilla-passion-fruit-plant-in-pot-40cm-flowering-age/383251802407 but i have tried 4 times to pay and buy, every time  payment was reversed without a specific reason given, i don't know why. You may try and see if you are more lucky with that Poland nursery. It is said it is flowering age and looks quite healthy in the photos. In case you get to buy from there, please let me know.

(Of course you may try with seeds, available everywhere, this is what i did yesterday, planted seeds, but you and me know quite well that seeds need patience and even then we can't be sure that they will germinate and grow up)

I'm looking for an established Passiflora Ligularis vine in the San Diego area. I know that exotica has some seedlings but I'm hoping for something a bit more mature.

Thanks!
Kenny

I reached out but didn’t receive a response. I paid $10 for the seedling I got from exotica

Jonah, the El Bumpo scions you sold me are looking wonderful, lots of vigorous growth pushing out. Thanks again!

114
I bought one of the seedling from exotica couple months ago, they where in pretty poor soil(to many uncomposted woodchips) and the cold so it was barley growing
put it a 2gallon pot of good soil and a unheated green house and it growing nicely.
heres a pic of it just planted it to a 45 gallon container

Those are some happy looking plants! If only I didn’t kill the seedlings I got :x

115
I’d be interested in buying some  cuttings of the passiflora ligularis you’re digging up. Would you be willing to sell some?

I know that Laguna Hills Nursery also sells Cherimoya. I'm not sure if they have the specific varieties you are looking for though.
