My friend gifted a supposedly Mahachanok 5 years ago from Excalibur, there was also a label that listed the name and date of said variety. Removed fruit first few years so didn’t think anything of it. Last year it fruited but fruit dropped. This year it has a lot of fruit but it’s a malikka, not a Mahachanok, I hope it’s as good as some say, because i sure do like eating Mahachanok.

Are you sure it’s a Mallika? Post pics.

I changed the settings a few months ago to limit editing of posts after a certain time. I did that because a member with a few hundred posts account was stolen and every post was replaced with a spam link.

I want to keep a happy balance between preventing spam and allowing members to edit their sales posts.

Any suggestions? I think I have it currently set at 6 months.

Here is a link to a live presentation that is about to start regarding vanilla breeding in Florida.

Speaker is Dr. Alan Chambers https://trec.ifas.ufl.edu/faculty/chambers/

There was a change to the spam filter and it apparently blocked entire domains/hosts or something. I think it has been fixed now though.

Hi Patrick. You came up to speed fast on what to expect from GoDaddy :)
What Malware did they remove? Did you have scripts that were uploaded?? PM me with whatever GoDaddy sent you on the malware removal, I'm very curious what it could be.

Mod/Admin access to SMF doesn't allow me to do much of anything, I'd need access to your hosting account. There are several steps I would take right now, but SMF is also about to release a stable version 2.1 (they are on RC4, can't imagine there are many bugs left to squish). We can wait until that's released and do it all at once. We can get on a call to discuss the details, PM me if you want.

Spammers like you have on here now are tough to stop in an automated fashion. You have an image captcha and 3 challenge questions on the registration form, so it's (likely) real people signing up and posting the nonsense. There are a couple ways I know of to fight these guys, but I'm not sure what plugins SMF has available. Quick search gave me this one, looks promising: https://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3851
Active moderators (you trust) that have the ability to delete posts and ban/suspend users are your best bet for an easy fix.

I added one of those spam stoppers for the forum a few years ago that worked pretty well for a while. I think the recent upgrades seemed to have removed the filter.

Is the image on the top of the forum saying Tropical Fruit Forum not displaying for everyone else also?

Same here. Someone needs to fix this.

It will take some time for Google to reindex the content of our site is what the hosting company is telling me.  We moved from a much older, slower, and smaller database version.  We had no choice, as the company and web in general are moving to the newer version. This site is over 10 years old and delicate.  Sorry for any loss of data, there was no way to preserve everything without spending money.  We should be good for now, and Google will reindex us in time.

We are only 9 years old!

59
A few forum members have messaged me regarding their posts and messages from the 9th being missing.

I was told that was caused by GoDaddy moving our hosting. The move took about a day, so everything that was posted after the move started was not transferred when the move was completed.

I don't think there was a way around that issue.

I just wanted to let everyone know about the issue so no one would think that we intentionally deleted their posts and messages from that day.

If you do not want to post the details of the transaction here, please send me a PM.

I prefer to know who these members are so I can delete them.
So what? By now 'that' person may have already duped many or may be innocent. In this forum it is easy for any person to easily enroll a new membership under a new pen name!

I think I may be misunderstanding your point because you are coming across somewhat rude.

I see a lot of complaints about the unexpected failure of these systems. Do you guys secure somehow these systems? Do you buy all this stuff insured? I ask because being on a budget, I am afraid to risk buying something which will stop working after a short period. My brother is a plumber and he always used to secure his work at generalliabilityinsure. Diving more into this subject, do you use insurance in your work? I am new to this niche, so knowledge from colleagues with more experience would be helpful)

This post looks like a spam bot

I’m not sure if it’s a bot or if it’s an actual person. This post reads like it was written by a bot but the first post by the member looks like it was written by an actual person.

What I’m starting to think is that these members have a real person open the account and then a makes an actual post and then they have bots take over from there. The first few posts don’t have any links but then all the posts they make start having links. I’ll try to remember to keep an eye on this members posts.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Soursop and cold
« on: December 26, 2020, 06:30:17 PM »
What was surprising is that 15 small soursops, 3g, in the same area were opened to wind, no protection, defoliated because of previous cold nights, and a one single tree survived even last 32f. It has to be different...

Keep an eye on that one and see how it performs the rest of winter. If it has good quality fruit, it may be worth propagating.

My trees are all kept in an enclosed patio with walls on both sides so no wind and I noticed huge differences between trees right next to each other as well.

Yes, there is variability in the cold hardiness of different soursop trees.

I have a bunch of different soursop seedlings growing right now from 4 different continents and some are more cold-hardy than others.

Some have lost all leaves, while others have had no damage with the recent cold here in S Florida.

I've brought them all inside for anything under 40 though to avoid too much damage while they are young.

I think people should be able to list a tree for whatever price they wish. That’s why I haven’t deleted this post. I also think that if a price is unreasonably high, forum members should also be free to call the seller out on it to protect individuals who may not know any better and think $100 for a 3g sapodilla is a reasonable price. If someone is aware of all of the facts and is willing to pay $100 or $200 then they are free to.

What I do not like is anyone lying or hyping up a description of a fruit and it’s availability in order to get sales.

I’ve seen posts where people say something is super rare when it’s not. When I see something like that, I’ll just edit or delete the post.

D’s Fruit Trees, did you ever sell trees at the Palm Beach County Rare Fruit Council sale?

BSBullie may have offended some with the way he responded but I agree with him that $200 is definitely a rip off for a 3 gallon sapodilla. Even $100 is a rip off for a 3 gallon sapodilla.

It makes me glad to know that for the past 10 years I have always made my own ! Sounds like a massive lawsuit incoming, I don’t understand why people buy products like these from the conglomerates. It would save you 80% of the cost to make your own and would be far nicer!

This is another good example of a spammer/bot.

Rich,

Glad to see you posted here!

At least your Tommy Atkins trees will provide a good base for top working to better varieties. You could probably try to topwork one branch now even though it's winter just to see if it will take.

Shane,

I'm a real estate agent. I might be able to help you find a property.

Thanks for all the great responses,
Now:
Which cultivar should I plant? Partial Shade? Full sun? Irrigation? THANK YOU

I would recommend planting a seedling and then grafting it with any good tasting fruit. I wouldn't bother looking for a specific cultivar in Florida since the only nursery with named cultivars that I know of is Excalibur and last I checked the smallest size grafted Malay apple they had was in a 25 gallon or so.

HMHausman on the forum had a seedling Malay apple tree growing in Davie that took 15 years or so to fruit and was probably 25 ft tall. My tree took about 8 years to fruit.

Hawaii has more variety so maybe you can find a grafted tree from there. Or alternatively, maybe someone from Hawaii can mail you some budwood from a good quality variety.

This is a tree that is definitely in need of a dwarf cultivar.
