How far away can you smell a durian tree???
« on: February 15, 2021, 09:07:19 PM »
So im sussing out the perfect spots on my property to plant durian trees, i dont mind the smell at all but my wife started dry reaching at the smell when i bought a durian into the house.  I have a very good spot approx 30m upwind of our house to plant them on slight slope.  I dont want to go putting plants there only to wait 10 years then have my wife complaining that she can smell them from the house and have to cut the trees down.  Is 30m upwind to close?

Far enough I think in open air. But how do you prevent the fruits falling and kill someone before they have the chance to taste it?

It is more about them being in enclosed spaces. Near the house should be fine. I have 3 limberlosts in the garage atm and is only when it get shut up the aromas comes in the house and its modest at 10m away. Marang can be more penetrating and they can smell like cat urine at times.

They only smell for a day or two when they are about to drop and it’s never strong if they are outside.

If you open the conversation with 'Jim reckons', what could possibly go wrong?

We can smell the flowers from 10 meters away, what a nice strong scent at night. We have plenty scenting tree's like plumeria and so but durian beats them all.
