Garcinia (lemon drop) defoliation

Both garcinias are losing leaves.  At first I thought it was wind damage from Ian, but the damage is spreading.  It looks chewed but we are completely fenced.  These two trees are each 7 feet tall and wide.   Here are some pics.

That looks strange. The remaining leaves look pretty good. It doesn’t really look so much like a sick tree dropping its leaves. Do you see the fallen leaves under the tree?  What do they look like?

I don't know what it is but I would like to know.

I have seen this on my lemon drop as well and I thought it was some type of bug eating the leaves.

Both of my Lucs garcinias did this also. They are putting out new
flush now. I attributed it to Ian

Peter, I cleared out debris under the trees to see if there was an unusual amount of leaf drop.  Noticed some.  These two trees are side by side, but another tree further away is starting to drop leaves too.  My concern is that I'm not seeing a lot of new growth.  Is it possible this is damage from Ian that is just showing up now?  Could insects cause this type off damage?

If the problem was insects you should be able to notice their damage that’s why I have you looking at leaves under the tree. If there aren’t any leaves something has eaten them. If the leaves are under the tree and they don’t really look damaged then I would expect a root problem.
The random factor is Ian. Ian could have stressed the roots or top of the trees to the point of causing an alarming leaf drop.
Personally, In such a case I would apply a liquid microorganism drench.

 Strangely, none  of the canistel,  sapodilla, or other fruit trees in the same proximatey are showing the same symtoms.
Orkine, are you seeing any more leaf drop?

It is not progressing and it is limited to the one plant though there is another garcinia (planted from seeds from Raul) within 8 feet of it.
