Mulberry Fruit Comparison

The thai dwarf is ripening here.  My chickens eat them all though which is fine.  I got the other red himalayan setting fruit this year so I can compare the 2 himalayans.  Should be pretty soon.

I bet the eggs your chickens produced are extremely delicious.  Are they free range?

Yeah I have a couple different fenced off areas they roam all day in over an acre of fruit tree orchard space. I lost a dozen of them to coyotes earlier this year and killed the coyote and now they are good again. 

A few years ago I went to the exotica nursery in Vista CA and bought every kind of mulberry tree he was selling and planted them all in one of the chicken areas.

If anyone has ripe mulberries, please share your photos and describe how you like the taste/flavor.

Once my mulberry trees are done with the fruits, I plan to cut them all back a lot so if there is interest, I will generate an Advance purchase list for the mulberry cuttings so it will make it easier for me to just contact you when I cut the branches and then you can pay and I will ship. There are some rare/scarce varieties that I will not be taking cuttings yet since my grafts are too small.

Does anyone have ripe Black Pakistan fruiting now?

My trees are late this year, fruits on all my trees (6 in ground) still have green fruits and a few just starting to turn red.

Lovetoplant, don't ask me those questions, I'm terrible at describing the taste and aroma.
Maybe you can tell me how it should smell and I can let you know if I can smell it and which one has the best/most. Right now the only fruits on my trees that are ripe is the Thai Dwarf (I'll post photos soon), Australian Green, White Pakistan, Red Himalayan. Looks like Tice is almost ready to pick, and maybe some Oscar or Maui.

I may not have as many as Kaz but from trying / owning: Tice, Pakistani, Himalayan, Dwarf, World's Best, and White... Pakistani is still a stand out overall.

Oolie, I can relate to competing with all the wildlife, nylon bags only seem to work for birds.  I've been collecting the plastic vented boxes that strawberries, grapes, etc are packaged in to protect some fruit just so I can at least taste some of the varieties.  This year, some critter, probably ground squirrel, is eating all the leaves off some of the mulberries.

So far this season, I have tasted Thai dwarf, Bryce's world's best, and Siam jumbo.  All three have been very bland.  Thai dwarf and Bryce's both have a firmer texture and more acidity than the Siam jumbo.  Thai dwarf and Bryce's fruit from last summer were much better, so we'll see if they improve as the season progresses.


Siam Jumbo is the smaller fruit on the left.  I got this tree directly from Amanda, she says the later fruits are much larger like the photos she has posted on her facebook.  Also, these are just the first fruits on a small potted plant.

So, I just ate the fruits in my hand from the pic above and these Siam jumbo taste better than the previous ones from the plant and better than the Thai dwarf.  I don't have a Bryce's plant in my home garden so can't do a side by side taste test with that one today, but Scott said they were bland.  Husband sent me a video of the DMOR9 and Black Pakistan and they have not colored up yet.

Kevin, I agree with you. But wait until I post the brix reading for the first ripe ones (Thai Dwarf, Australian Green/White Pak, Red Himalayan).

Janet, I also purchased the Siam Jumbo, and it has a lot of fruits on the plant and it's about the same size as you show. Fat, short, and no big difference in taste to the Thai Dwarf yet. Maybe next year with the grafts on the tree grows more than the fruits would be large and tastier.

I was ready to start chopping down my Thai Dwarf since it just has to many fruits to keep picking everyday. Now I can convert this tree into the Siam Jumbo next year.

My siam is not different. Some fruit are longer, some wider and shorter. I got it directly from Amanda as well. It's a second year and i will take more pics.

Yes, a Persian friend gave me a small plant propagated from her tree 2 years back.  It's growing very slow.   Last Fall I took a scion from it and grafted onto a branch of my Pakistan.  The graft is starting to leaf out now.  I heard Persian mulberry supposes to have the best, but create a mess when dropping on the ground since it is extremely juicy

Well for messy, the Thai Dwarf/World's Best will have the most fruits of any, and when the ripe fruits drop daily it's a mess.

I had a good few berries from my Siam Jumbo's, but most were nabbed by birds. rooted cuttings just under a year old.
I ate my single remaining fruit today, about 2/3 the size of Ana's last picture of it. Pretty sweet. I should've taken a picture.

Im thinking next year they'll really take off.

I also have Persian, it is blue raspberry sour delicious. REALLY tasty, but yes, insanely messy and much juicier. You cannot pick it ripe without it kind of smushing. It really is a deep dark purple where as Pakistani is sort of pinkish (Himalayan even more pink).

Persian will begin ripening fruit in a month or so and last for 2 weeks to 4 weeks. It looks like the tree I planted seven years ago is going to start ripening fruit over 3-4 weeks instead of the usual 2 weeks. Buds began opening over a week ago, and there are already fruit developing while other flowers are just beginning to show, and some buds haven't even opened yet.

I need to dig them out, but I have some small fruit protection bags I picked up in Japan. I believe they were for loquats or apricots, but they should be about the right size for a bunch of mulberries.

The trouble is that they're three to a bunch and to open the bag to get one out will likely knock the others off before they are ready.  I think the white ones may actually have enough sugar to dry on their own in the paper bags without spoilage, and I am willing to experiment. I will update with how it goes.

My Persian one just started to wake up a couple of days ago.  My Pakistanian woke up 3 weeks earlier.  They are both on the same tree with Pakistanian rootstock

Most of my mulberry varieties all ripened now except for the Black Pakistan, just starting to ripen on some trees.

My Sangue e Latte is the latest to ripen, it had a lot of green fruits hanging on the long branch so was hoping for good fruits again. I did see some squirrels on my grafted branch yesterday. Today when I looked up every single green fruit on the tree is gone, the squirrels ate them all, rats. I did manage to find 3 fruits which are still green so I bagged it.

- Thai Dwarf
- Shangri La
- Red Himalayan

I will post photos here of the ripe fruits I had of these above. Just need to find the photos and edit for posting. The Sangue e Latte is not on this list since no fruits are ripe yet.

My Persian has leaves but I don't see any fruits on the branches. It is about 1 year old from grafting, length is about 10 ft tall, no fruits. I hope it will have fruits in my location. Never tasted a morus nigra fruit.
