Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: The secret to growing a healthy Pitomba?
« on: October 25, 2023, 07:25:23 PM »
I have two that grow excellent. I have good loam/sandy soil and they like water when they are flowering. The fruit on one is better than the other. I'm in San Diego near the coast.

I'm sorely tempted to try a clone of Asimina triloba hoping to discover one that requires minimal chilling hours which might set fruit here in Tampa (9b).

I suspect that there are a few TFF members in 9b who've tried growing A. triloba and maybe someone has found a cultivar that has set fruit for them in central Florida.

Fingers X-ed!

I have heard that "Sunflower" is one that doesn't need as much chill and that is my best producer along with "Taylor". In Chula Vista we get 70-100 hours below 45 degrees.

Mee too!   I have a lead, but he says the fruits will not be ready for another month or so.  I'll let you know as soon as I hear back from him.
Thanks Stela

I have a seedling that's 12 inches tall.  I'll let you know the minute it sets fruit.

Benjamin

Thanks Benjamin,

Mark

My friends from Vista were able to fruit Pawpaw, and it is easy for me down here in Chula Vista. I have had no problems with tribola seeds germinating and using them as rootstock.

Hi,

I'm looking for Mountain Soursop seeds. I'm in San Diego and hope someone has them so I don't have to order from the tropics.

Thanks,

Mark

very nice, how is the flavor on that variety?

This one is real good, it has a strong vanilla taste and slight banana.

I have two mature trees grafted with 8 varieties. They have been fruiting here with less than 80 chill hours for the last 3 years. Here is a photo of the last 2 huge "Taylor" varieties picked today. One is 1 lb. and the other 3/4 lb. Here is a video of our trees on youtube.

Here are the last 2 of my Taylor variety, very large and is a top tasting one.

Nice Nate,

I just got one and expect good results down here in San Diego. It's a tough plant to find.

Mark

We grow them fine 3 miles from the beach in San Diego, no frost, 80 chill hours.

Those Brewster's are probably the "Farwell Ranch" Brewster variety. They have chicken tongue seeds, the real Brewster doesn't seem to get that many "Chicken Tongue" seeds.

I have Ecuadorian Walnut which is probably the same as Peruvian and Colombian Walnuts. They were very easy to germinate.

I live in the southern most part of California where we get about 80 chill hours and no frost. I grow and fruit Pawpaw along side Cherimoya, Mango, Jackfruit, lychee, longan etc. Here is a video I made a week ago showing lychee, pawpaw and jackfruit fruiting.

I'll be up there for the next one. With plenty of good trees.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for sharing the updated video.

Where did you get your black fabric ground covering?

Have you noticed if Luc's garcinia is more vigorous grafted onto Imbe than on its own roots?  Has your Luc's flowered yet?

How would you compare the taste of your Kecil wax jambu against the green one?  My Thai Long died and I'm not sure if it's worth replacing.

Janet

Hi Janet, I got the nursery cloth from Horticultural supply in San Marcos. The Luc's has grown 3 times faster grafted onto the Imbe. I haven't seen any flowers yet, there maybe some hidden though. The Kecil has a really distinctive taste, it's not real sweet, but has a real good flavor.

Hi, tell your wife thanks for the translation.

The Keo Savoy needs more heat for the fruit to size up. We are so close to the coast that many of the asian mangos don't do too well.
