Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting mulberry variety?

Black Pakistan is the best.  Red Himalayan is close 2nd.

Kaz has some threads comparing them all if you search.  It's been discussed a lot

Im liking the black pakistan and himalayan better than the white pakistan.  The white ones just have too much sweets and not enough flavor for me.

Graft should be done in January.  Also remove all the growth from the rootstock.  Every single bud and suckered take them off and force on the scions to grow.

The fruit is so good you pitch a tent and camp out under it

Its probably not too late if you can get growth by July or August.  After that, the scions sometimes dont push and can fail.

If its not urgent you could wait till next spring.  I had some trees to do the same thing on and I got sidetracked and never cut them down.  I will go ahead and stump thrm this weekend.

June is good but I have found the best way is to chop the tree down in April and then graft onto the new shoots in June or July.

You want to be grafting way in toward the trunk of the tree for variety change.

As far as variety, sweet tart is excellent but they are not large.  Can't help with scions.

Thats where mexico dumps their sewage out into the ocean.

For me, Sharwil was a stand out and the best avo I've had. It wasn't just a single fruit, they were both that good. I'll definitely need some scion from you next year of that Brad, my Brokaw Hass is actually kicking ass even though it got snowed on pretty bad. Is Sir Prize really that bad? If so, I could top work that tree too. I am super surprised with how well avos are doing at my house.

Sir prize has a lot of issues.  Fruits too much, or wont fruit at all, weak growth,.. sun burn, sagging brwnches...  Fruit can be good, can also be mediocre.  Inconsistent...  its pretty useless.  I had 2 trees and top worked them both with sharwil.  It may be better for somewhere with less heat, I cant say fornsure but it is definitely not a top tier tree.

Heres the only catch with sharwil.  It seems to need a lot of heat to grow well.  It may or may not do well there, you will just have to try it.  Its doing well here but some others I know it hasnt performed well for them.

Sharwils are amazing.  They werent as rich as last years eaither because of the cold weather but thry are still very good.  Thats all I have been eating here.  Hass #2
I top worked about 50 trees with sharwil so I will tons of those for sale in a couple years.

I think pinkerton is getting top worked next year.  The fruit spoiled really fast this year for some reason.  I think the mid 30s weather we had messed them up.  They didnt do this in past years.

I got a box of kaimana from HI shipped this week.  175$ for 10lbs free overnight postage.  Very expensive but these are amazing lychee.  Very large juicy and sweet.  Worth the heafty price for an occasional splurge.

The place is hulabrothers.com.  They have them for another week or 2.

Human Urine looks better on paper than sea water to me.

Even easier to get than ocean water.

Hey John that sucks the fruit got over ripe it looks like.  They dont keep that well once they start getting soft.  If you buy another box again down the road I can try to help make up for the duds you got.

15
Yeah Im talking about soaking the cut end of the scion after you make the cuts for the graft.  You dont just stick it in there dry do you?  Do you?
Ok. Wait...what are we talkin' bout here? Right, just to clarify how long do we soak so that there is sufficient lubrication for success? Dip it in and pull it out or leave it there while? The applies only the scion, right?

Quick dip or leave it in while you cut the rootstock, doesnt matter.  Just dont let the cut part of the scion get all dry.

You should always dip the cut scionnin water before grafting.  Even sticking in your mouth andnusing spit works fine.

I have never heard of that and haven't seen that in any grafting video. Tell me more abut this and how it works. I had some expensive scions fail on me so I am curious. Thanks

It just works.  Dry plant cells are dead plant cells.

Not always that small but they tend to be smaller seeds.  That one is just extra small.  It looks like a really good one with the yellow color that looks like lots of oil.  Sharwil is really hard to beat.

Try some garlic powder and coarse salt on it with chips.

I dont think its the best fruit but a good one is very nice.  I can tell from your photo that one is kind of over ripe mush.  Fresh ones look bright white and not slick or brown.

21
I think you grafted it but Im not sure.  Cant remember.

22
By the way, what roostock is the black pakistan tree on Kaz?  That tree refuses to grow.  The white pakistan is going fairly strong.

23
Mine grew a lot also but maybe the roostock is not as vigorous.  Whatever rootstock the DMOR is on, plus that top working combo is insanely vigorous.  Janet would know what type of root stock was used for the DMOR tree.  The thing is growing like one of those non fruiting mulberry trees.  Its going to be a monster.  Im pretty sure it is even more vigorous than the exotica one. Which is fine, I have it planted out by itself with tons of space right south of a chicken coop.  I hope it shades the whole thing in a few years.

I take big scoops of chicken turds and put it right at the base of the tree on the mulch and water it in every now and then.

24
I have 2 himalayan and they are the dmor9 and a different one from exotica nursery.  They taste the same but the exotica one seems sweeter but the tree is mofe mature so its hard to pass judgement yet.  The DMOR one is insanely vigorous.  The tree is going to be enormous.  The other one is still vigorous but not like that.

25
My tree is already flushed out or I would take a cutting.  I did try them and thry are similar to my other himalayan but I think the other ones taste better so far.  Theres 2 himalayan trees out there, I am growing both of them.
