Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Annona punicifolia

Very cool.  What would you recommend as rootstock for these rarer annonas?  A. Montana seems to be what everyone is recommending.  Our tree just doesn't want to flower even though it had a fruit on it last year when we bought it.  I'll have to do some research in hopes of grafting some of these rare annonas next spring.
Thanks for sharing, Mike

I think zone 9a is doable for most bananas but fruiting them can be somewhat of a challenge.  They would need to be protected on frosty nights and given a nice headstart to be able to hold fruit.  In 9b we are able to fruit most bananas but when we get frost they do get knocked back and can be slow to get back going to fruitable size.  Once you have an established mat I think they can take the cold a lot better and you have a better chance at fruiting, because once spring hits they tend to shoot up really fast.  I would recommend the dwarf favorities.  Dwarf namwa, Manzano, rajapuri, Patupi, ?Viente Cohl", dwarf cavendish but it seems to take a long time to ripen fruits for us.  We try to grow only dwarf types.  Even praying hands works good for us but its one of the taller varieties we have.

Not sure what that was in that picture but it wasn't comb and not even where the bees were kocated, I was just trying to show the fruits.  Yes bees can build comb on trees or in the open but prefer protected location.
Cherilata produces a lot of flowers and I'm guessing can produce a lot of fruits if you hand pollinate it.  Our tree is only a few years old and we haven't really forced it to hold alot of fruits yet.

Im not sure where the swarm came from but definitely not one of ours.  All our queens are marked and we inspected today and all of our hives are doing well.  No comb formed as they had just landed, Picked up another swarm from a water meter yesterday.  Bees everywhere.  lol

Congrats! Beautiful tree, by the way. Do you know what rootstock its on?

Pond apple, but Cherilata grafts easily to most any annona.

Yes both are protected with other trees.  Ours in Kissimmee is about 12' tall hasn't fruited we throw a popup canopy over it and wrap the sides with plastic when we have frost in the forecast.

Looking to finally identify this one.  Last year there was a discussion on Facebook about it being mislabeled.  It has grew in size and hopefully we can now get a positive identification.

Thanks guys.   We had a really mild winter, Only a few days around freezing temps from what I can remember.  Yes it spent all year outside but we may have covered them.  We try to protect what we can when we can, especially some of the smaller stuff.

Yes it's possible with the right protection.  My friend in Orlando has a large tree that fruits every year.  My friends mother who lives 1 block over from us has a tree grown from seed that is fruiting for the first time this year.  Protected by the canopy of some large trees only.

How long do you think these will take to hold fruit?  We have 1 grafted tree growing in the ground for a couple of years that is flowering but hasn't set a fruit yet.  We have a few other seedlings but I don't think those will hold fruit for a few years yet.  Also do you happen to have pictures of the Rosada fruits, Im thinking this might be the same variety we already have, but was sold as a Red ilama.
Thanks

You were talking with Mike at TreesNMore.  You might ask him, I know he did some grafting about 2 years ago for another seller.  He might have some available though.

Estee loquat grafts appear to be pushing blooms.  We were one of the lucky ones to get a scion from Kaz last year.

I traded for this on the forum, Actually for a few of these but ended up getting only one.  Here it is holding a fruit but looks like a regular sugar apple to me.  Has anyone else fruited this cross?

Rollinia can fruit in a pot.  I had 1 in a 15 gallon pot holding a few fruits last week.

how many do you need and do you need them shipped?  I might know a lady that has some but she is in central Florida.

My seeds started to germinate in less than three weeks!
Thanks again, Mick.
Let me know if you have an extra one you are willing to sell or trade Turtle.  I missed the boat on these and by the time I seen it, Mick was unable to accept payment.  I would like to add one of these to my collection.  Thanks in advance.

We got a good take on our scions.  1 even grafted to our grafted San Pablo in the ground.  It is growing the fastest.  Hopefully we get some flowers later in the year and I will pollinate it.  Grafted to Pond apples and cherimoya rooststocks.  I'll double check tomorrow for sure about the cherimoya takes for you Kaz.

Thanks Ryan.  Thats what im trying to figure out what a good rootstock for grafting garcinias would be.  Most of them grow slow.
