Tropical Fruit Discussion / Barbados cherry
« on: May 14, 2017, 02:05:43 AM »
Are there varieties of barbado cherry with better fruit?  Bought mine off of a local guy that knows nothing about fruit.  Mine produced fruit first time this year, and it was really tart.  I let the fruit set a long time.  They are almost purple.  Even the birds aren't eating them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Spondias mombin var. purpurea

My wife was born in Nicaragua and lived there until 5, when she moved to NYC.  When she lived there her favorite fruit was jocote.  Hard to find, but, I finally got one.  I want to general what is it's general hardiness.   I have a large vaulted ceiling that leads to my backyard, so, I could keep it potted.  But, would prefer to plant with protection if possible.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rose apple/wax apple
« on: April 24, 2017, 01:25:29 AM »
I originally wanted to buy some of these trees.  U liked the ornamental value and of course, I like to eat fruit.  Lately I have heard many comments that the fruit lack flavor and are insipid, ie. Not worth growing for fruit.  Any advice?  Any have seeds or plants that more flavorful/sweet?  Thanks.

Citrus General Discussion / Bloomsweet
« on: February 22, 2017, 11:51:35 PM »
When I lived in Hampton, VA, zone 8a, I got the bug for cold hardy citrus.  With the helping of Gaylord in VA Beach, I was amassing a very nice colection.  I had changsha mandarine and a limequat in the ground.  I had keraji madarin, satsuma mandarin, bloomsweet, clem yuzu, Sanbokan lemon, ichang lemons in pots and was scoping for places to plant them in my yard.  If I could have found kishu mandarin in VA, I would have been a very happy camper.
Well, life did a turn around and after 7 years in VA, I left for AZ in 2012.  I had to leave all my citrust behind and start a new.  I was so invested in this point in cold hardy citrus, that I wanted to regrow all my favorite's out.  To my great sadness , I quickly found out only kishu mandarin and owari satsuma mandarin could be purchased in AZ.
So, over the past 5 years, I started a one man campaign to beg wherever I could to get or pay for the remaining trees through seeds.
One note is that I decided to leave out limequat and ichang lemon.
Well, I am happy to report that I am almost whole again.  With my clem yuzu and keraji recently sprouting, and from the past couple years, I know have the complete list.. ..except for bloomsweet.

So that leads me to a question, should I just up on bloomsweet?  Unlike all the other citrus I listed, I have never actually tried a bloomsweet.  Was growing it mostly for cold hardiness.
I have heard mixed reviews on the flavor of bloomsweet, with some saying it is insipid.  Also, I have seen some interesting grapefruit seeds on ebay for some sweet grapefruit and thought maybe I should just give them a try.
Any recommendations?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wtb, jocote

Looking to buy either seeds or preferably seedling of spondias purpurea. Apparently,  it was my wife's favorite fruit when she lived in nicaragua.   If there is a dwarf variety, even better, as it will have to stay potted.

Citrus General Discussion / Sending seeds/fruit
« on: December 12, 2016, 11:49:52 PM »
I wanted to ask millet if it is legal to send seeds and fruit.  I thought I had read an article where the ban on sending seeds was lifted, as it was shown citrus greening could not be transferred through seeds.
Also, I did not think there was ever a ban on mailing citrus fruit.  Sending fruit is actually my preferred way of sending seed.
Just wanted to be completely clear on this, so no one makes a mistake.
