Does anyone grow papayas indoor during the cold months?
« on: August 26, 2023, 04:58:04 PM »
In my area of central CA, it gets down to 30s in the winter. All of my papayas either die or barely survive during that time. I only grown "Hawaiian" papayas. I know the Mexican type is cold hardier but to me they don't taste that good. I'm considering taking them into the living room this year. Will need to deal with the wife about it, but that's another conversation altogether. Lol.

Sort of... I grow mine in a greenhouse all year.

Before I had the greenhouse I kept my trees in a sunroom, and the papaya only did well with a LOT of light - four 4ft shop lights about a foot above the leaves.

Otherwise the leaves got smaller and smaller until they were just little nubs.  They did recover when I put them outside, but it was a long recovery.

I assume your GH is heated? Do you get fruits?
I also have a GH, but it's only 6' tall, not enough for papayas.
Thanks,

Yeah, I've grown papaya in my living room too. This was when I was a wee little kid before I had a greenhouse lol.
Grew extremely well even with not much humidity. And even flowered non stop in the house.
After a few years it was already past 6'.

You could try grow Babaco, mountain papaya or oak leaf papaya.

If you have to try fruit tropical papaya, keep the root zone dry over winter.
