Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can you bury passionflower trunk?
« Last post by NickD on Today at 05:06:39 PM »
I ended up cracking the base of a 5yo vine in a large pot they get very brittle. It looked intact but u could see the vine just dry up.

I currently have 2 purple in 35 gallon pots 3 and 1 yo. Looks like I may get 75 fruits this spring. I am curious about what is the max number you could grow in a large container? I staring doing proper pruning (not perfect) this year and it made a difference.
My maypop had about 20 fruits on its first year in a 5gal pot, although I accidentally snapped a large chunk of vine when I tried moving it inside to finish ripening after the frost, so only 8 of them actually ended up ripening. In a larger container, with a more mature plant, and a longer growing season, I would think you could get quite a lot.

the older trunks are susceptible to fungus. are you able to lift the plant out of the pot? if the roots are substantial the whole plant root system should pop out with the soil. then you can add soil to the pot. i have a short video of what the root system looks like on a 3 gallon plant https://www.youtube.com/shorts/LeF0tpc2Vbw notice the entire rootball came out with barely any soil visible
The soil is kind of heavy so I'd be worried about snapping the trunk or roots if I started pulling on it, but once it's warm enough to bring them outside (mid-May), I can try and hold the containers upside down and see if the root ball can slide out.

I put this Psidium sp Itacare off to the side and kind of forgot about it.  Started off sprouting slow but I only noticed it again because it has been exploding with new growth.  I believe the seedling is just under a year old.  Already taking full sun too.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: How far North has someone grown a pawpaw?

Tropicaltoba, the answer is "as far North as you want! In your greenhouse..."

Seriously, though, the NRCS Plant database map shows the native range well up into Ontario.

https://www.wildedible.com/pawpaws#range

Maybe you could  get them well established in your greenhouse then transplant them to a sheltered location. I started mine that way and they are doing well now in the yard. I am in zone 6.

Good luck!

Carolyn
That map only shows that they're native to Ontario, not to how far in Ontario they grow naturally.

I know of four wild groves here in Ontario. I've only seen fruit on two of those (one is too young/new, the other probably doesn't get enough sun). I think the main limitation here is not the winters but the length of the growing season - most of the wild pawpaws ripen right around the first frost, and those are groves located in the southernmost parts of Ontario along Lake Erie (USDA Hardiness Zone 6).

There's a farm in Niagara Region that grows them commercially, and apparently (haven't been though), one around Borden, ON.

There's a guy I follow on Youtube from Magnitowoc, WI, he's been able to grow some up there.

Good catch.

The spammers are getting smarter. Those look almost like real responses and they don't include the spam links (via editing) until after the post has been there for a bit.

Rad vid, thx for posting.

I am hesitant to give JT more positive feedback, as don't want him to get inundated with requests to the point he can no longer help me =)

Having said that, top notch collector and person to work with! So happy with my trees, they are good sized and handling the bright April sun light champs. You rock JT!

That is the nicest yet very selfish compliment! Ha ha ha.

I don't have irrigation on my trees out back so I've been relying on the rain and mulch/ground cover to keep things moist for me.  All has been good without hand watering at all so far, but I did give it some h2o yesterday since it has been mega hot with no rain in sight.

Thanks John.....

I'm seeing a lot of late varieties on the resistant list. I wonder if there is a link there.
