Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Please help ID this plant.

Looks to be a cherry of the rio grande or something similar (Eugenia)

These are very good!!!
Thanks again for letting me stop by and get some while getting poured on in the rain😂
I find it best to cut and then scoop out with a spoon.

3
I think you guessed right on both.
Grimal is known for darker leaves
The leaves should get bigger as the tree ages

Second one does look pitangatuba also

Good reasoning!

Thanks Jaboticaba45 for the presentation!
Was a pleasure to come and speak!
Was nice meeting you!!!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Yangmei Seed imports
« on: July 01, 2025, 10:31:34 AM »
Hello everyone,
I’ll be importing some Yangmei seeds
Does anyone want 1000 seeds? Price will be $225 including shipping to you
Germination rates vary, but with 1000 seeds, you will easily get over 100 plants
This is based off my germination rates last year even though I didn’t cold stratify or anything😭
No varietal name, but good to grow out and see
Thank you!

6
There’s one growing very nicely in Orlando area by my friend!
I am now dying to get this tree lol

7
I heard it was a fiasco lol
I’ll be heading down this week and am so thankful that I have friends that will give me more mangos than I can eat🤣

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Yangmei on Sale ---> WEEE

FWIW, Yangmei trees appear to be very prone to root rot. I have yet to own a grafted tree, but from what I can observe with yangmei seedlings it is quite intriguing to watch them respond to the moisture condition in the soil. Even in a large plant pot, I had seen a group of yangmei survive and thrive in one part of the pot while another group succumbed eventually to root rot at another site of the same plant pot. It was later realized that some areas of the plant pot tend to stay wetter for longer than other areas…
Funny thing is seedlings are actually ok with it
I had mine growing in a garden bed thats plastic…but I never opened the drainage hole for a month…
We got over 12 inches of rain in May the soil was consistently sopping wet

9
It does not like freezes. Where they are native to is pure tropical.
Also want to keep ph pretty low
Mines been happy in promix
But it’s slow without being in its native area

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Chinese mangosteen?

I found this website that sells grafted trees.

https://www.hardtofindtrees.com/product/golden-mangosteen-%E9%87%91%E5%B1%B1%E7%AB%B9/
It’s from a guy in VA who is drop shipping direct from China.
It may be suspect to customs searches as it’s international

Problem with Seattle is the long cold and wet winters
Did you talk to Matt at wanderlust nursery?
He’s in your area and will have all the stuff you can grow and fruit at your place that is rare

13
Eugenia Stigmatosa - Bellamy's description said likely cold sensitive, haven't noticed. It's slow, but a strong grower.

Nice! Is that the one you got from me?

I read it may taste with hints of green beans on heltons website lol

14
Large container is better,
They can be fruited in containers like 20-25 gallon pot would work well in the long run.
I had one, it grew pretty big and flowered for 2-3 years straight but never set fruit.
I had the hermaphrodite one but for some reason it never set🤷‍♂️
If from seed, may want to grow out several to get male and female

15
It’s in season in the winter
I got some from jamymango (Jessica Garner)

The fruit is weird texture like mealy apples and soursop hints
I definitely would not grow it after tasting it,
But definitely give it a try yourself! Theres always people who like them

When looking to pull the trigger on purchasing a new Eugenia/Myrciaria plant or seeds, what criteria are you setting?
More popular fruit selections with a ton of reviews makes the buying decision easier. With literally 1000s of Eugenia and Myrciaria to collect, what qualifies as a must purchase?
I only buy off of what my friends and connections tell me is good.

I mean I do grow some that are ornamental with bad fruits like truncata (I think I'm the only one with that) and noumeensis (Maybe it's a good fruit?)

Can the seeds be dried out or do they need to stay wet?  I have them in a plastic bag with their own moiture only at the moment.
They can be dried out, but I think keeping them moist is the best
I think most people correlate dried seeds with old seeds.

Keeping them in a bag with their own moisture should be enough though to keep them moist before people get them to plant out, I wouldn’t worry about that.

My pinky guava from ONG set fruit,
Excited to report back on it in the future.
Long, pink, and seedless

Does it ripen soft or is it a mainly crunchy Guava?
Believe it ripens soft like regular pink ones.

I totally agree with your statements Brad.

To anyone looking to sprout yangmei, I highly recommend buying fresh seeds as they are easier to sprout.

Just plant right now, and expect them to germinate next spring. No cold stratification or anything
Older seeds will work well also, but germination rates may be lower or more varied or require more.

I bought the whole Ong collection. Just 1g trees but they’ll be flying soon.
Nice,
I liked the Loan guava, named after his wife.
Also tried some other cool guavas there I believe his favorite is the square one, speaking of which I need to obtain. It is very aromatic with spice notes, I think it will be a fan of people who like spice mangos

Good to see!
Glad it is doing well for you, and I hope it sets fruit!
The scarlets tend to bloom very quickly. I even had a 1 ft tree make some buds lol.

23
Once on the list, always on the list,
Man that’s crazy they tracked you down  :o
I already ordered some seeds for me and a friend, but if I have extra, I’ll lyk

24
They have it,
but it's under patent and is only being sold in HI.
I'd estimate several more years until they start selling it to people from mainland.

I'll have to check with them again, because when I last contacted them, they only had the #78.  I'm not asking for them to ship to mainland.  I would buy it local when on trip.

You can’t buy it local unless you live there as it’s under patent.
They are only selling to residents.
Idk why they stopped selling fruit though, I didn’t get to taste it when I was there.
