Tropical Fruit Discussion / Acerola varieties
« on: August 25, 2023, 09:44:27 PM »
Hi,
I have been recommended by a good friend to look into acerola.

Are there superior varieties of Acerola?  I would like to try growing a couple of good varieties.
What is the best time to obtain cuttings?

Thanks

Hi,
I purchased some scions, but I was away when they arrived  :-[....  In total, I think it was a about two weeks (maybe a bit more) from the time they were cut to the moment I worked with them.  I thought to myself, "none of these grafts will take...".

The first atemoya variety scions, I just went ahead and grafted them as they were.  But then, as I was finishing with that variety, I thought to myself, "these have been out for a long time.... maybe hydrating them in water would help...".  So, I did that for the second variety.  I left those over 10 minutes on plain tap water.

The grafts for those that I didn't hydrate, the first variety, none of them took!  Out of 4 grafts of the second variety, the one that I did hydrate, 3 grafts have taken....

Don't know if this is significant or just casual... but I am hydrating ANY SCION that comes into my hands  :) :)

Hope this helps someone.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Problem grafting PPC atemoyas
« on: April 26, 2023, 11:12:24 AM »
Hi,
I recently tried to graft PPC atemoyas for the second time without success.  Last year I also tried, and the same thing happened.  Let me explain what happened and maybe someone has some idea on what to do.

I grafted the PPC scions onto sugar apple rootstocks.  Within about a week the scions started to sprout, so it seemed like the graft was working great.   At this point it even looks better than the other grafts I have tried  :(....  Then, after about 2-3 more weeks, the new growth dies, and so does the graft.  The same thing happened last year.  I think in total I have done 4-5 grafts... In all cases the graft appears to take very rapidly, but then dies off....

What could be the problem?  Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Next week in Orlando Florida
« on: April 08, 2023, 01:14:09 PM »
Hi!  My son is attending college in Orlando, Florida, and we are going to visit him next Monday, and stay for a couple of weeks.
I am thinking that maybe this would be a good opportunity to visit a mango farm that sells their goods...  Do you guys know if there are any places more or less close to Orlando where I can sample some nice mangoes?
Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona scions disinfection with bleach
« on: March 16, 2023, 02:04:31 PM »
Hi,
Last year I had annona scions grow mold and not take.   Don't know if they didn't take because I messed up in the grafting or the mold, but I am SURE the mold didn't help :-).... This year, I would like to disinfect the scions to see if I get better grafting success.

I have been reading in various places and, probably, the most common recommendation is to use bleach.  The most typical concentration is 1:10 Clorox bleach: water solution.

There have been however significant variations about how long to dip the scions in the bleach solution.  One person in "Houzz forums" said to not place in the solution for more that 1 minute.  Another person said in another forum to use 2-3 minutes, and yet another one said 5 minutes.

Another thing that left me wondering was that someone recommended to "seal" the ends of the scion to prevent bleach from damaging the cambium layer.

Do you guys have some experience on this?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooting jabouticaba cuttings
« on: February 03, 2023, 02:15:25 PM »
Hi,
A while back I commented that a friend of mine has a jabouticaba tree (over 20 years old).   Best guess right now is that it is Plinia coronata.

Six months ago, I cut some branches of the tree and planted them in ground.  It took a while to lose the leaves, but eventually they did lose them....  After 6 months however, it has not produced ANY root, but INCREDIBLY, the cutting is still green if you scratch it.

Anyone know how to root these things?

Thanks,
Edgard

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pot size for atemoyas and sugar apples
« on: January 12, 2023, 06:48:57 PM »
Hi,

What is a reasonable pot size for atemoyas and sugar apples?  And about how much space should I leave between plants (as a minimum)?  I don't have much space available so I need to optimize it as much as I can....

I was thinking on going 15 gallons final size, and put the plants apart every 2 feet (i.e., each plant in its' 2x2 cell).

Can you guys offer some help on this?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are mangos true to type?
« on: July 12, 2022, 11:39:36 AM »
Hi,
Are some mango varieties true to type?  It seems to me that I have seen posts saying that some varieties are....  Is there a way of knowing if a variety is true to type or not?

Thanks,
Edgard

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona purpurea picture
« on: July 04, 2022, 12:04:34 PM »
Hi,
Satuday I went to visit a farm about an hour from where I live.   On the way there we found two Annona purpurea trees serving as part of living fences on a farm.  Below is a picture of the fruit.  I think  it is quite unique.   In Panama this fruit is called "Toreta" or "Guanabana Toreta" (i.e., "Toreta Soursop").   It is telling that it is compared to the soursop because the flesh is somewhat stringy, and it really is not so much to eat fresh but to make drinks.  Some people will eat it fresh anyhow, but I don't really like it fresh.

I guees it kinda looks like a bigger and rougher Rollinia deliciosa.

I wonder if it will hybridize with soursop or other annona.

Hi,
I think this will be of interest to annona fans here.

I have a "Big Eyes" sugar apple I planted from seed.  I have it in a 10gal pot, and it is about 2 years old.  This year it produced its first fully developed flower, a single flower in the whole tree.  This was the only flower in the tree, the only annona flower in my backyard, and I am positive no one near me has any kind of annonas.   Last year it produced a tiny flower, but it didn't really develop into a "full" flower.

The thing is that this morning there was a small growing fruit were the flower was!  According to the Taiwanese farmer from whom I purchased the fruit a couple of years ago, this "Big Eyes" variety doesn't need hand pollination, but that I NEVER expected that one single flower would germinate itself.  What in the world!

Maybe it is just a fluke accident, but I thought it was very interesting.   Let´s see if it produces more flowers this year if they fruit.....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Peaches and Plums in hot climates
« on: June 30, 2022, 11:31:22 AM »
Hi,
I have seen some messages about peaches and got really curious.  Do peaches grow in hot climates?   I was under the impression that only Georgia and above...

And while we are with peaches, what about plums?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba propagation
« on: May 27, 2022, 09:52:05 AM »
A friend of mine studied in Brazil, and yesterday told me he brought jaboticaba seeds from Brazil, and planted a tree about 29 years ago in his father’s house.   The tree has been fruiting for the last 10 years (took 19 years to start fruiting).

Anyway, his father’s house will most probably be sold in the neat future, and he (and I) would like to propagate that tree.
Can I air-layer jaboticabas?  Are there any specific things to do or just use a regular air layer?
Can I propagate using cuttings (like figs)?

Thanks…

I found a very interesting article about using growth regulators in sugar apples to improve fruit set and quality.  I was surprised to see the results, especially regarding the use of "brassinosteroids".

In case anyone is interested, below is the link.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about breeding annona hybrids
« on: May 12, 2022, 04:38:22 PM »
I wanted to ask something about breeding annona hybrids.

I imagine that the process is something like this:
(1) cross-polinization to produce the hybrid,
(2) harvest fruits to collect seeds of the new hybrid,
(3) plant the hybrid seeds,
(4) when the new hybrid plantings are of the appropiate size, graft them onto older wood to obtain  fruits faster and see what you've got…

My question is this:  What is the recommended age/size of the plantings where you can proceed to graft them?

I had been thinking for a while that since cherimoyas originated in the highlands of Peru, and that Peru has all kinds of weather regions (from very cold to very hot), that there might be varieties in Peru that have adapted to hot climates over the centuries.  So, for a while I had been searching in different places, asking friends I have in Peru, etc..., but couldn't find anything conclusive.  I also contacted a couple of agricultural research stations in Ecuador, but they didn't know.

Recently, however, I found the video I'm linking here.  This video is about pruning, yet goes into other details about cherimoyas.  It is presented by a lady called Maria Elena Rojas, who is the manager of an agricultural research station in Peru.  Around minute 25, while she is talking about choosing the right variety for your area, she explains that there ARE VARIETIES FOR THE JUNGLE.  The jungle she's referring to, is the Amazon jungle, and that is VERY HOT and VERY HUMID.

Interestingly, she also mentions that these hot weather varieties tend to have leaves which are thinner than the cold weather varieties and have better medicinal properties.  From a picture she shows (at around 25:10), the leaves look like atemoya leaves, even though these are definitely cherimoya varieties.

YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKsODNG2nF8

Sorry that the video is in spanish only...

I forget if it was in this video, or another one I saw, that they explain that these hot-weather cherimoya varieties have not been used commercially as much because people prefer to grow soursop commercially in hot weather regions, and cherimoya in the highlands.  However, cherimoyas can be grown everywhere in Peru by choosing the correct variety.

I wrote an email to this lady asking to obtain seeds of these varieties but haven't received a response yet.  I am still pondering what other way I can get a hold of some seeds in the future.

I thought that this would be interest to all annona lovers here....

I will be spending a couple of weeks near Orlando, Florida, starting next Monday.   Any recommendations for purchasing fruits?
Thanks!

Hi guys,
I was thinking about my grafting failures  ;) and thought that one problem I am surely having is that I don't make the cuts cleanly enough, and also, I probably don't match enough the angles of cuts either.  In other words, the cambium layers don't match up as good as they need to match....

So I thought that a "solution" could be this.
1) Make the graft, side-cleft,  top-cleft, or whatever (as I have been doing),
2) Cover the graft with buddy tape (as I have been doing), AND then
3) Apply a TIGHT layer of white electrical tape OVER the buddy tape to force somehow a better joining of the cambium layers.
4) When the graft takes, I can remove the electrical tape, and it doesn't remove the bark because it is over the buddy tape...

Now, before I continue to kill grafts, could you guys comment on this!  Does this sound like a reasonable idea?

Thanks, Edgard

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Atemoya scions on sugar-apple rootstock
« on: April 01, 2022, 09:47:00 PM »
I have been grafting various atemoya varieties onto sugar-apple rootstock.  PHet Pak Chong took almost immediately, but the other varieties have not.  I did two PPK, and both of them worked after about a week.

I am wondering if some atemoyas are not graft compatible with sugar apples, or maybe I am just a lousy grafter   :)   Or both…

I am growing some cherimoya seeds to try on these.  About how long do I need to wait before I can use the cherimoya seedlings as rootstock?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Taiwanese annonas
« on: March 28, 2022, 09:35:03 PM »
Today I met a taiwanese farmer, who now lives in Panama.  He was telling me that he brought from Taiwan a large sugar apple variety (“Tamali Damu”), and also “pinapple sugar-apples”.

He still grows and sells the sugar apples.   He grew the pinapple sugar-apples for a while, but they required hand-pollination, so stopped growing them.

I had never heard of these “pinapple sugar-apples”, so I searched on internet, and it turns out it is an atemoya that Taiwan grows and exports.

Had any of you heard of these taiwanese annonas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / La Habra Sun and La Habra Blanc
« on: March 16, 2022, 05:35:08 PM »
Hi,

I have read very good reviews on these atemoyas on the forum, and I was wondering.  Were these atemoya varieties developed in La Habra, California?  Is this why they are called "La Habra"?

I am just curious...

Thanks...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wax apple varieties
« on: March 10, 2022, 03:26:33 PM »
Hi,
I have eaten wax apples ever since I was a kid.  I had however only seen red ones with seeds.  A couple of months ago I was able to try a pale pink seedless variety.  I was pleasently surprised!

Are there many varieties of wax apples?  Which are the best varieties?

Thanks,
Edgard

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this Annona reticulata?
« on: December 19, 2021, 10:14:58 AM »
Hi,
I was given the seeds of the fruit shown in the attached image, taken from a local tree.  Is this Annona reticulata?  And also, if it is reticulata, what is the best way to germinate the seeds?

Hi,
Here were I live, in Panama, Central America, there isn't any significant production of cherimoyas.  In fact, the only commercial source - I know of - local to Panama told me that the season is finished.  There are however imported cherimoyas from Peru.  I was curious about their seasonality, so, I asked the people who import them from Peru.  And was VERY SURPRISED to hear that they are available year round.  They plan on bringing in a shipment every 15 days, year round!

How is this even possible?  How do they get the cherimoyas to flower year round?  Is this something that I could do with the few annonas I have?  This is definitely something I would love to learn how to do it....

I grafted a couple of dream atemoya scions onto cherimoya rootstock and a couple of sugarlata scions onto sugar apple rootstock.  This was about a month ago.  The scions still "look" and feel fine (they are wrapped in parafilm), but they have not grown.  The rootstocks on the other hand keep producing new growth, but every couple of days I remove anything that grows below the graft.

Should I leave this as is for another month?  Or should I try to re-graft these scions?  I am a bit clueless....  Is there a way to know if the scions are still alive?

I was SO happy with my grafts too....  :D

Thanks for your comments.
