does this look like alphonso mango tree to you? Just took this picture today. Love the different colors. It looks different then the other alphonso I have. The two don't look the same at all.

The color of the young leaves is completely different from my Alphonso's. See below, photo taken this Thursday 10/13.

must be one of those online order bloopers. tag said alphonso, well see what i get when it fruits. nice coctail tree you got there, kh. how does ah ping taste? looks like lz is overtaking the tree. maybe good idea to just have lz on atree by itself?

Try smelling the leaves. I remember both my Alphonso and Kesar had unique Indian resin smelling sap.

Actually, Alphonso is still the king on this tree. See full tree below, it has 2/4 of the canopy. LZ has 1/4 on the right and Ah Ping has 1/4 on the left/front. Originally, it has stunted all the other 6 varieties (Sweet Tart, NDM, Half Moon, Mahachanok, Alampur Banishan, and even Lemon Zest) except Ah Ping (no fruit yet). I took a bud from a stunted branch of LZ and chip budded on one of the two main branches of Alphonso to keep it in check. I posted the progression of this budding process sometimes ago. And this seems to work well so far. The rootstock is a Home Depot Lavern Manila. I'm not a mango freak, this is just to experiment with cocktail tree behavior.

Thanks for the picture Thera, another case showing that Lavern Manila makes great rootstock. Have you gotten any fruit from the LZ grafts yet?

No fruit yet, Simon. The original graft was stunted by the Alphonso graft (scions from Ashok). I hope the current graft would flower soon. Next season would be the 3rd season for this cocktail tree and I'm going to let some fruits hold this time.

handsome tree KH. I look forward to seeing my tree looking like yours, now that I got a greenhouse, I think it's promising. We'll see how the winter goes.

no smells, might be because I'm too cold here. My average days/nights is 70F/50F.

It should have that strong piney scent from the leaves even in our climate. Alphonso is very vigorous in our climate and its not surprising that its stunting everything else

Alphonso leaves do have a very distinct sweet smell which I have not encountered in any other mango. I think the smell is stronger in an older yellowing leaf if you rip it up. My alphonso here in florida hardly sets any fruit, so I decided to topwork it. It seems to be susceptible to PM in our humidity. Does it fruit well in CA?

Alphonso suffers from fungus here in California as well but it depends on the microclimate. I never sprayed my tree and still got fruit set but many of my panicles were infested with Powdery mildew.
