Title: Trade: Aframomum sp. - large fruits
Post by: Soren on April 17, 2013, 02:07:00 AM
Yesterday I bought some Aframomum sp. fruits at a local market outside Kampala; the fruits are large and have a refreshing slightly acid passionfruit taste, with a spicy twist. One of my favorite Ugandan fruits and very container friendly as well.
Seeds are available for trade with anything I don't have  ;)

Hi Soren,

Do you need more than 1 plant to fruit?

Tomas

Soren, does the sp. mean you don't know what species this is? Is this the same type you sent out in previous mailing? Thanks,

Good question Oscar; I bought these on the market and can't identify the parent plants - but these pods are bigger than the others I have previously mailed (Sadhu got A. mildbraedii which is the smallest, and Anestor, Thurston and others from another source years back) so it is likely a different species - there are at least 3 species in central Uganda and several more in other areas... The taste however is the same more or less.

Roy

A. corrorima grows in western Uganda. I will try and list the likely species from my literature.

Was back in the area where I bought the above large fruits from, and a vendor held a bunch including this big pod - the largest I have ever seen. Guess that area has the perfect conditions for Aframomum or perhaps a large variety of one of the species.
(http://s15.postimg.cc/k2go8dxs7/aframomum.jpg) (http://postimg.cc/image/k2go8dxs7/)

On a different market near the town of Mukono on the Jinja-Kampala highway I found this dwarf Aframomum sp. for sale. The pod are smooth, and unlike other Aframomum spp. I have seen, these are just laying on the ground (and not sitting upright on a stem above). Many species have leaf-lets growing to 1-2+ meters but this was hardly m when mature.

I am interested in seeds.  Btw the mulberry are up!  Will have to review what I can send in return.  Ay luck with the mangosteen?  Rambutan?

Soren!

I planted the seeds you sent 134 days ago, and they are JUST now pushing roots.  The first two showed roots today.  Now I wonder how long until they push growth above the soil line.

Thanks again,
Carraig

Mine were up in 4 weeks and quickly reached 10cm 6weeks later.I should have separated them already as there are too many crowded in the pot and most are ready to put out their 5th leaf.I think every seed sprouted.

Mine waited until late in winter but shot up once the temps met with their approval. Have to separate them out as there are dozens in one pot.

Adam,

Not yet, I have a large multi-stem plant with 3.5-4ft tall stems that looks like it may flower this year or next.

Out of curiosity, how long do these plants take to fruit? They look awesomre!

Here in Uganda they flower within 18months. Fruits starts dark red and ripe light red. They are back in season so let me try and get some and open for the sake of the photo.  Pulp is white with black seeds.

Adam,
The plant I purchased from you is now 37". No blooms yet.

I purchased a bag of seeds online and grind them in a pepper mill as a substitute for black pepper.

Hi Soren, I feel uncomfortable asking for seeds, I am in a much better place if I pay. But, if you happen across excess seeds in the future, I would be very grateful. Oh. BTW, I ended up sourcing a doz Telfairia seeds which I'm awaiting germination.

I germinated one of the t. pedata already, just watch for mold. Some of the seeds started to form green mold on the outside, I sprinkled powdered sulfur to help kill off mold.

Bought a bunch of Aframomum pods on the road to Kabale a few days ago. Due to the size variation of the pods I suspect several species are present.

Is this similar to what we West Africans call alligator pepper, Aframomum daniellii? I have only ever used the seeds as a spice, I had no clue you could eat the fruits like that. If you have any more seeds I may have to buy some. ;D

There is a number of different species growing here in Uganda, and most of them are also utilized - though on a smaller scale - as spices. But for all, the pulp is very nice and consumed fresh.

It's loved by most in East Africa, but it's not sweet and I remember Anestor wasn't crazy about it. Would love to hear what people think. It's also a very plant.

Mine fruited. I liked the taste, was just disappointed that they are small and not so much to eat. But the taste was kind of like passionfruit.
