Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: NDM flowering
« on: October 10, 2023, 09:22:21 AM »
Nah, prolly more like April mangos, if the fruit set holds.

Here in north Miami I’ve seen two separate NDM trees blooming this week but very few panicles. Very interesting.January /February mangos? Awesome .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Freezer recommendations

Get one that is not auto defrost (typically a chest freezer). The defrost cycle very quickly ruins flavor (< 30 days). With non defrost, you can store fruit for a very long time (1 year+) without flavor loss.

It's been a while since I've had them, but the flavor was quite good, just a notch below cherimoya and atemoya. However, getting them to fruit and remain healthy is a challenge. They are plagued by leaf hopper, which causes stunted leaves, chlorosis, and ultimately an unhealthy and stunted tree. Seed borer may also present a problem. And it usually requires boron to set fruit. I've only seen one productive / healthy ilama tree in south florida. I'd say it is only suited for the more advanced growers.

The graft itself is fine, but you will want to eliminate those two shoots coming from the rootstock (right side). You'll also want to tie the shoot from the graft to the stake and gradually try to make it vertical.

5
Looks like bird of paradise, not sure scientific name.

6
Pim sane mun is very vigorous and has a spherical spreading growth habit, excellent for shade. The fruit isn't necessarily the best (nor the worst), but it makes a fab shade tree for a large space.

I'd do the side veneer now while it's still green. Even if it fails, you can still try again in the spring.

Def self pollinating. I only have one tree and it sets several hundred fruit. Next closest tree is probably multiple miles away.

You can side veneer graft at about 3 feet high, where the wood is still green. Then after a month, when the graft heals, start cutting back the rootstock above the graft.

Would agree. Lots of stellar qualities:

  • Extremely productive (even as a single isolated specimen tree)
  • Thrives with little to no care
  • Slow growing -- good for small yards
  • Doesn't mind some shade
  • Long harvest season
  • Fruits can hang for a very long time.
  • Good sub acid flavor

Flavor isn't quite up to par with, say, a mango, but it's pretty decent. Brix probably ranging from the low to mid teens (I haven't measured yet) and a good sub acid note to balance out the sweet. Just make sure to pick when reddish orange (not yellow). The fruit can hang for quite a long time in the orange state, so it's not particularly hard to catch them in the ripe state.

One drawback would be how long it takes to produce from seed. From memory, mine was in the 8 year range when it started producing regularly.

All-in-all, it's the best of the easy to grow garcinias that I've tried, mostly because the fruit is not gut wrenchingly sour as most of the others are.

Grave graft should not have any problems.

Cleft grafting on to vigorous shoots will often fail, as the tree will just grow around the graft.

For vigorous shoots, you would want to use side veneer, which allows the main shoot to continue to grow. Once the graft has taken, you can cut back the rootstock shoot.

Grafting tender shoots generally results in higher success, since the cambium is less differentiated -- meaning there is effectively more cambium. But when grafting onto a very high vigor tender shoot (such as those emerging from a stump), you'll likely get better take using side veneer over cleft.

In South Florida, Keitt can get to 5 pounds.

As mentioned already, Florida grown OS don't look like that. The one on the right looks slightly like a sweet tart. Does the sap smell like citrus?

I would not give them any nitrogen, unless you're wanting them to get big quickly. Be careful not to feed the grass with nitrogen too close to the root zone either.

There is a special 0-3-16 formulation that Har / Guanabanus helped create which is sold by Truly Tropical and is perfect for mangoes on our sandy soil: https://www.themangoplace.com/fertilizers

Yes, must go deeper on the rootstock to reach the cambium layer (white). Be careful not to scrape off the wet / slimy cambium layer.

Since it's already burned, you may as well leave it where it's at. It's probably adapted to the sun at this point and burned what it was going to burn.

Yah, i was also thinking sunburn, like maybe it got moved from shade to sun.

I don't think regular tap water would cause that. I would start to wonder if perhaps soft water is somehow making it to that tap. At this stage, you don't want to give it any form of fertilizer and would want to flush the rootball with water known to contain no salts. It looks beyond recovery though. The time to save would have been before that last flush. But I guess it's worth a shot?

The orange growth look like a good sign.

22
DesertTropicals, that looks like salt stress. Perhaps you have soft water or maybe it got too much fertilizer?

23
Veneer graft, like this. But wrap the top in parafilm or similar to prevent dehydration and water ingress.

Very nice. You know you can also side veneer the bigger shoots.

Venus and orange essence

It's late August, anything other than Keitt left on the trees in Florida?
