Tropical Fruit Discussion / Florida avocado rootstock
« on: September 12, 2023, 11:44:47 AM »
What is the best rootstock for grafting in Florida? Which ones are
more resistant to the root nematodes.

I have a vexator and 2 sabaras and 4 reds and a restinga in an area south of my house. There is a big tree
giving off protection in the area. All those trees are mature fruiting trees. When we were under
32F two Winters ago for 6+ hours all the trees were fine. I also have a yellow jabo in the mix.
Even with the large tree I think my whole yard was under 32F. Our dewpoint has to be different
than yours though.

« on: September 11, 2023, 10:05:22 PM »
I don't trim my longan trees. When I cut a panicle of fruit I cut 6 inches or so of the branch above the fruit
I have drip water but not sure how much it helps I only have one sprayer under the tree and the trees are
10' x 15'. I get cricket frass which is insect manure with chitin and throw several large scoops around
the trees every month for fertilizer. As I said I am in humid Florida with the rainy season. CA is completely
different. I'll take a picture tomorrow of one of my trees. The organic fertilizer I am using seems very effective.
I notice after using it for a couple years allot of my trees are very dark green. Especially the longans and

I am in Florida and have several types of longans.
I have 2 kohalas and this year they were both loaded with fruit.
Last year they both didn't fruit. I have a fortune eye that fruits every year.
I am not sure why the kohala trees seem to fruit every other year?
My trees are easy to care for in Florida I throw some organic cricket frass
under the canopy every month and they are very dark green. They are low
maintenance trees

How is the flavor of the Tim atemoya?
Have read they are excellent fruit out of Australia.
I have never had a bad atemoya. The Tim can get large and tastes like most
atemoyas I have eaten. The geffner and dream taste similar. Another added
benefit is when I was under 32F for 6 hours my geffner and dream both died.
My Tim and Lisa which are right next to the geffner and dream were untouched
and both fruited the following Fall

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: New mulberry graft fruiting -- remove fruit?

I would snip them now

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: New mulberry graft fruiting -- remove fruit?
« on: September 05, 2023, 10:45:32 PM »
I would remove the fruit. It is a great sign that the scion pushed leaves and fruit.
There's plenty of energy and I wouldn't want to waste it on a couple fruit now. I would
want the energy for more flushes

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Foreign mango familiarity
« on: September 05, 2023, 10:41:28 PM »
I would definitely try them all. How much do they cost over there?
They were selling for $4-$8 a pound this season over here at some places.

The tree leaves looks dark green to me. I wouldn't give any fertilizer anymore this year.
Depending on the weather it could flush late and not have flowers next year on the new growth.
I have a couple larger mango trees and I don't fertilize them at all.  I do give  my young mangos
8-4-8. My neighbor gave his large Lancetilla and Angie fertilizer non stop last year and the leaves
are super dark green and not one flower this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tomatoes in FL
« on: September 04, 2023, 07:45:16 PM »
I grow cherry tomatoes and I am a little behind this year.
I usually start them Aug 1st. If I get them going then I have tomatoes
by Thanksgiving. I grow 4-6 different kinds and only have 2 types up
this year. I restarted seeds of a couple others yesterday. They grow all
Winter for me unless they get hit with heavy frost. I start more around
November to have a second wave in case of frost. I grow them in 20 gallon
pots and also some in raised beds. I usually hit them with miracle grow once
a week. Around April they crash every year. I usually grow 6-10 plants and
can pick 2-3 baggies a day of assorted cherry tomatoes. It's nice to be able
to have a snack anytime. I give allot away to people.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Growing advice for Sugarlata needed!
« on: September 02, 2023, 07:17:45 PM »
The want to go dormant when the days get short even if they are warm.
I like to start them in the Spring and try to get the trunks brown before they
go dormant. If the trunks are green they could wither away if not enough water
or also collapse if they are kept too wet. I did sprout a Big eye last Fall and it made it
through the Winter and is doing fine. It is in the ground and pushing 2'. When they are dormant
they don't need much care maybe a splash of water every 2-3 weeks. They loose their leaves and
look rough. I have had the same experience with sugar apples, and other annona seedlings.
I like to start annona seeds in April or May.
