Every year around this time, the area underneath my Mango trees usually has a good layer of dead mango leaves from the year's growth. Is it okay to leave it for mulch or do you rake it up once a year and discard it? I've always wondered if dead mango leaves are good for mulching the tree, my trees are appx 11-14 years old. Thanks for any help and feedback

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Add Bees to the list of Mango Lover...
« on: July 17, 2021, 10:30:28 AM »
I definitely have my fair share of critters that love my mangoes, but today I found a mango still hanging on the tree with bees munching on in  ::)...I'm not upset, I love bees as they are the best pollinators so I'm willing to share with them  ;)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Maha Mango...
« on: July 10, 2021, 09:21:06 AM »
Anyone's Maha mangoes ripe yet in Florida? All of mine are still green.

Most of my Glenns are gone, just a few left...a little bit more Cogshall left and of course my Keitt are still green( mine usually ripens in Aug/Sept).

I'm planning on picking the Mahas as soon as I see some light yellowing and finish ripening in the house to beat the critters from eating them all.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What mango am I???
« on: June 02, 2021, 02:29:41 PM »
Saw this fairly decent size tree at a landscaper company , he let me have one of the fruits, it's not ripe yet. The guy that worked there said he had no idea what the variety is, that it was one of the best lol.

It has a pointy tip, first thought it might be a Maha (which I have a tree) but none of my fruits have a pointy tip at the end...looked up Valencia Pride that too wasn't pointy...any ideas??

Thanks in advance!!

Hi everyone, can some one recommend a nursery or website that sells Pineapple guava maybe a self fertile variety like 'Coolidge' somewhere in Florida? None of my local nurseries carry them...

Thanks for any help  :)

I have a Mango book like new condition I'm selling. It's called Tropical Mangos "how to grow the most delicious fruit" plus a free bonus "Mangos of the world quick guide pic #2. I'm selling it for $25 plus $7.00 shipping you get (both) priority mail. Any questions please ask.

If this is not the right place to post this LMK and I'll move it  :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Will this mango ripen in the house?
« on: June 17, 2019, 12:37:17 PM »
For the mango gurus out there I need some advise, I found this mango hanging on the tree, clearly either squirrels or birds or whatever else has been chewing on it. I noticed the mango is already yellow inside. Do you think I can pick some of the mangoes on the tree now and what are the chances of them ripening inside the house? I'm losing about 5 or 6 mangoes daily to squirrels/varmints and I'd rather pick the few that they left me or I'll end up with nothing  :'(...This is a Glenn mango btw. Thanks in advance

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Let the Lychee war begin...
« on: May 21, 2019, 11:44:27 AM »
Found several birds stealing my lychees, lots of remnant pieces and seed on the ground, they are still green and super sour  :(...soon enough the squirrels will be next  :'(

Few months ago...

I have Glenn, Cogshall and a few Maha mangoes on my trees. All are still green but we've had about 25" inches of rain since May 13 so I'm not too excited that the flavor is going to be great, but I still want to eat some before the squirrels eat them all, they've been eating a few since they were the size of a large egg totally green!! I was hoping to pick it mature green and let them ripen on the counter or in a paper bag before they eat them all. If some of yours out there are almost ready maybe mine are not far behind?

My mangoes are only about 3" long, completely green and I've already found several of them on the ground chewed up!! I've never seen them attack and chew up mangoes this green and immature before...not sure why they are attacking them this soon. Last year and prior years they waited till it was at least close to maturity about 2 weeks before they are starting to ripen not 6-8 weeks!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What type of fruit is this?
« on: May 22, 2017, 08:20:54 AM »
A friend of a friend went to Homestead this weekend and gave this to her, she can't remember what it is and she didn't want it and gave it to  me. She knows I like unusual fruits  :)

All I know is it looks like small guavas but its not.

What is it? How do I know when its ripe and how do I eat it? I did peel one like an apple and it was green inside tasted sort of like a sour apple  :-\

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango...Any idea?
« on: May 18, 2017, 03:30:32 PM »
A friend gave me 2 of these mangoes, the person that owned the tree just bought the house a few months ago and knows nothing about mangoes...tree looks about to be 4 years old maybe? by the looks of the picture she took. One is turning a little bit of yellow and the other is still green. Its definitely a roundish shape mango....mauritius lychee for reference

Any guesses?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychees available for online orders...
« on: May 16, 2017, 02:15:07 PM »
For those that don't have access to Lychees locally and don't mind paying the price plus the shipping cost...I received an email today from lycheesonline saying: NO I do not get a cut from them Lol...

"The 2017 lychee fruit season has arrived. We will begin shipping lychees this week and every week following as they come available. The first varieties to ripen are the Sweetheart and Mauritius. There were two fruit settings resulting from bloom in early December (ripening now) and in late February and early March, which should be ripening in June and early July."

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I hope this works **sigh**
« on: May 05, 2017, 01:58:57 PM »
Today, I noticed a few of my Lychees were starting to blush...unfortunately the birds and squirrels noticed it also...I found a couple of crows flying over the top and picking the lychees ( they aren't close to being ripe) and then this squirrel was running up the tree and taking some also.

I think it was Brad? that suggested the bird away reflective ribbon/tape and this "bird b gone" balloon that's suppose to help...I guess time will tell. I also covered a few of them with the Clam shells, its the only thing that save some lychees for me to eat last year from the critters. I was able to eat about 40% of them, the critters are still the winner, they ate 60%  :'(  >:(.

Wish me luck, I will need it!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / These are Haden mango?
« on: May 05, 2017, 11:00:34 AM »
Bought a couple of these at Aldi's .49 cents each...I thought Haden had some reddish/greenish along with yellow, these are all yellow. Label says Haden but is it really?

Grape tomato next to it for size reference

Tropical Fruit Discussion / No Mango Blooms...
« on: January 11, 2017, 02:39:00 PM »

It's almost the middle of January and I still have no blooms on 5 out of 6 mango trees I have. I only have 1 mango tree blooming. As many of you living in Central to South Florida its been a very warm winter with the few occasional days of "colder" weather. My Lychee has blooms but its a "mixed" new growths with blooms mixed together. I'm hoping its just late and will start blooming next month. It will actually be a good thing if it waits to bloom later less likely it will get nipped from a late freeze...

How's everyone else's Florida mango blooms coming along...anyone on the same boat as me?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Keitt Mango...are you picking them yet?
« on: August 13, 2016, 01:40:38 PM »
Anyone picking Keitts yet? I have a tree with about a dozen of of them fell about 3 or 4 weeks ago and I let it ripen on the counter for about 11 days and they weren't bad at all...sweet but not as good as it could have been but considering it was hard as a rock and green it was pretty good...I have one that is quite large, can't wait to pick it and see how much it weighs, definitely the largest size I've ever had on scraggly tree  ::)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Longans...when are they ready?
« on: August 03, 2016, 03:14:32 PM »

A man down a few miles from me has a Longan tree loaded with fruits...bad news is they are very small due to the very dense fruits on each cluster, they didn't seem to get large because there were so many in a bunch  :-\

Are they suppose to be brown when they are ripe? He said I can have all I want, I tried several of them and they are pretty sweet but they are small in size...not sure if I need to give them a couple more weeks to turn brownish?

When is the latest (safe) time to prune Mango trees after harvest to insure blooms for this coming winter? Glenn fruits should be all picked by 2 weeks and then I was planning on doing some light keep the size in check. I've noticed the branches need to be taken up. I've had fruits laying on the ground and propped up so I need to raise it a little. Is mid August a good estimate on the last time to prune to allow new growths to mature/harden and get it ready for next winter's blooms?

How much longer do you think these Glenns can be picked and ripened on the counter? Starting to get a little blush on them...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Minor Elements...
« on: May 02, 2016, 04:27:34 PM »
When is the best time to put down minor elements for Mango and Lychee trees...once they're done fruiting or anytime between now and early fall? I have a bag of this I was going to try...Thanks!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about my Lychee tree...
« on: April 30, 2016, 04:03:41 PM »
I noticed today that I have quite a few yellow leaves on the interior part of my Lychee tree...these are mature leaves. The tree is 5 years planted and has baby fruits. Is it normal to have these yellow mature leaves fall off this time of year or am I not watering enough...its been quite hot and dry here lately.

Thanks for any help  :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Liquid Copper Fungicide...
« on: March 12, 2016, 09:41:25 AM »
Just got done spraying my mango blooms ( I know I should have done it sooner) but got lazy. All the trees are in bloom though only 10%-15% of them are open now. My question is when I spray again in 7-10 days which is what the directions says, I'm thinking a lot more of them will be open by then...can I spray the open blooms? How many applications and how long between treatments?

What are your experience with spraying the open blooms with Liquid Copper Fungicide...

Thanks in advance for all for the advise and help! You guys are great, I always appreciate the helpful advise  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Maha Chanok Mango...
« on: February 28, 2016, 10:36:24 AM »
Sooo...because I was too impatient to taste fruits from my own Maha I let it fruit sooner than I should have causing my tree to stop growing after the first few fruits were picked...really halted the new growths  :'(. When I saw some swelling the last few weeks I assumed they were blooms since all my other trees were putting out mixed blooms/leaves right now. I thought I would try something new. I decided to start fertilizing my Maha. I started several weeks ago when I first saw the first signs of swelling hoping to halt the flowers and let it put out new growths instead. Coincidence or not they are now bursting with  new growths, no blooms that I can find. Almost every branch has 1-4 new shoots growing. Very good news since I really need this tree to grow this year so I can let it fruit next season.

I wanted to get new growths instead of blooms right away instead of letting it fruit...wait till they are pea size then remove them and wait several more weeks before they start growing again. Thought I would share my method in case anyone out there might want to try it on their small/young mango trees? Not saying it will work for you but it did for me  ;)
