We all hear about Zill Mangos which is well warranted as the Zill's have a Catalogue of God tier level Varieties.

What about the other Cultivars being released or released recently in the last few years? I mean Dr. Cambell has numerous of Mangos for sale that I've never even heard mentioned here... I wanted to try a few, but the price of boxes is to much to gamble on a blind buy.

2
So after tasting a few boxes from Dr. Cambell and Sqaum… I was a bit disappointed, especially after tasting the world renowned Lemon Zest and popular Coco cream.... well those 2 could barely beat a Tommy Atkins in the form I ate them in...Just extremely washed out flavor and bland, most varieties I tried full of jelly seed as well except LZ. Now of course this is most likely to blame because of the early and rainy Mango Season.

Well the box that came in today was from DR. Cambell full of Sweet Tarts and Carries... Unfortunately All 6 carries are extremely over ripe and mushy! however the Sweet Tarts arrived just fine and 2 with ok ripeness. Well decided to cut my first Sweet tart open... literally half of the Mango was jelly seed. right off the bat I thought deja vu all over again with a jelly seed washed out flavor.... Well the first bite around outside of the jelly seed, was a bite that literally punched me in the mouth, stopped chew mid stride, and had me stuck for a moment marveling at this GOD DMAN GREATNESS!!! Ultra level sweetness mixed with sour patch kids candy sour.... literally a Euphoric experience!!!

I can't wait until the day when I retire from the Navy and get back to my Southern Ca home and Plant 2 of these.... JF can I give you a 4 years heads up and deposit to me 2 trees started so I can a 15 gallon ready for the ground? I know my Lemon Zest I tried were washed out, but I just can't see something tasting better than Sweet Tart Mango... That sweetness and acidity is just amazing, also tasted some mild complexity nuances in there somewhere near the skin as well. All in All the Florida Mango hype is real!!!! especially SWEET TART.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / South California vs South Florida Mangos
« on: June 11, 2018, 09:12:44 PM »
Has anyone ever compared the 2 regions? Since being transferred to Norfolk, Va in the Navy, I've started purchasing Mango Boxes from South Florida growers.

Although many factors come into play such as rain, fertilization, temperature, time of the season, age of the tree etc, so I've had Nam Doc Mai, Edward, Coconut Cream, Sweet tart, and Lemon zest from South Florida and not one mango from any of those boxes have even come close to ripened Nam Doc Mai from my old tree in California.... The Brix, flavor profile, texture... everything is just on a whole another level.

I've often heard on here of how bland Nam Doc Mai is... Well the ones from Florida were exactly that, extremely bland and washed out with mild sweetness... While the Nam Dac Mai from my tree in California was like pure sugar Candy in Mango form with extremely mild complexity of acidity and spice. That Nam Dac Mai has remained my baseline for Mangos as it's wiped the floor with everything I've had from Florida. Again might I add, this may be a bad season for Mangos, maybe too much rain, too early in the season, young tree, picked too green... lots of factors here folks...however so far it appears that California may have better growing conditions than South Florida to produce high quality Mangos.

Hey guys!

First out to sea adventure with my new Command in Norfolk Virginia and we'll be in South Florida tomorrow for Fleet week.

I was wondering if anyone knew of an markets nearby with good quality Mangoes?

7
Yes its breaking the Law, but imagine the good that will come from it.

Hope this idea spreads across the Nation. Imagine walking through your local park grabbing a Sweet Tart Mango, or grabbing a Flavor King Pluot for those of us up North.... Anyone know these guys CRFG???  ::)

*EDIT- just realized there are no ornamental Mango trees...unless you're talking about Tommy Atkins Mango Trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Enjoying Fruit in the Philipines
« on: July 26, 2015, 07:47:18 AM »
Currently in Roxas city enjoying a nice break from the Pacific Partnership Deployment. So far I've enjoyed tons of Manila mangos...I'm assuming their manila Mangos...at least 5 a day. I lucked out and got several SourSops.... Can anyone tell me when they are ripe? I grabbed one that had a blend of yellow coloring  instead of Solid green...hopefully I didn't pick a dud. I've been on the hunt for Durian, but unfortunately it seems to be found in an area far south of me called Devou, the local fruit stands don't carry it. I've heard you can check the markets sometimes and get lucky, but all travel is restricted unless it's by our government contracted transportation...

I stumbled upon a group of workers yesterday who appeared to be eating a Durian, me eyes lit up and I immediately went over there without concern and asked the locals if it was Durian and If I could buy some of it off them... to my surprise this was not Durian, the Worker told me it was actually Marang... He offered me the fruit and It was actually really good...He even gave me a whole fruit, no charge. (I love the Philipines) However I didn't realize this Fruit also doesn't smell pleasant.. I need to eat this thing fast because it's stinking up my Surrounding area. Hopefully the next spot we go to in Subic Bay will have Durian considering it's a commercial port... I must try a fresh Durian to truly judge it's flavor....what's crazy though....As much as people tout it being King in the Asian community...most of the Locals I spoke to here are not fond of this stinky Fruit lol.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Mulberry Thread.
« on: April 13, 2015, 05:16:18 PM »
I just ate my first Mulberry last weekend. It was a long 3 inch Pakistan Berry.... Dear God this fruit is amazing with perfect sweetnss. literally Wipes the floor with the berry family...Blueberries, blackberries, Raspberries...easily! This fruit is easily a top 10 fruit and possibly a tie for top 5!!!!

It seems Mulberries are underated or just aren't well known throughout the U.S. like other good fruit out there. Can anyone give their top 5 Mulberries please? I hear the Morus Nigra's are the best varities becuase they pack a super punch of sweetness and acidity? I'm currently looking to purchase Pakistan, Black beauty, Persian, and Noir de Spain...and end up doing a Cocktail tree for all these varieties since they can get big.

« on: March 27, 2015, 12:52:48 PM »
After a brutal Cold snap in Socal last Winter, My Carrie bit the dust and would I rather graft onto other trees at this point then buy another one... Does any Forum Members have any budwood to trade.... Most of my trees are too small at the moment.... But I should have quite a few things to trade with later in the year.

Dragon Fruit cuttings- Cebra, Condor, Sugar Dragon, Orejona, and Delight..... All putting out muliple Vines right now.

Cherimoya budwood- Lucida, El Bumpo, Chaffey, Big Sister

(additonal Wish list: Pineapple Pleasure budwood)

I notice there is a seller going by Tropical treasure, selling literally the entire Zill collection for Mangos for a little cheaper than any other online retailer out there with dirt cheap shipping!!! Is it too good to be true or what? I need to another Carrie after last winter.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Figs-R-Us
« on: March 17, 2015, 12:10:28 PM »
New to the Fig Game folks...realized there is Fig cult that runs deeper than the Mango nutz on this forum found on Figs4fun, they have rare trees and cuttings, that in some cases sell for over a thousand on Ebay... Some of these rare trees include the Infamous 100 year old Louisiana Heirloom "Smith", Cul De Dame White, Black Madiera, and Ronde De Bordeux that I'm really after.... I already grabbed Excel which is more common but Elite in Flavor according to the Fig Cult.

Number 1 on my list is the Smith!!!!!!!!!! Highly dubbed the King by many when grown in the right climate. I lucked out and scored a nice sized tree from a nice forum member and had it shipped to me....wouldn't you know, me being the idiot I am had a full Mailbox and USPS stopped processing my mail and sent all my mail back to the senders, where these nuts lost it!!!! Terrible on my behalf for having a full mailbox for 2 weeks... annnnnndddddd I'm back on the hunt!  Everywhere is sold out on the Smith too except 1 Florida Nursery, which of course can't ship to Ca... I have found cuttings on Ebay, but the horror stories of Ebay scare me...dammit I'm caught up in the FIG MADNESS, almost as bad as the Mango Fever I got last year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Frozen Lychee
« on: March 11, 2015, 04:10:25 PM »
Many of us out there don't have the luxury of eating fresh Lychee such as myself. I have tryed Irradiated Lychee in the Asian markets which are disgusting and I have tryed Fresh Kaimana Lychee in Hawaii which was Shocking to the tastebuds Good, definately God Tier for Fruit. Now my only option is the Asian market trash until my trees produce one day...actually have a Kaimana blooming as we speak. However yesterday I went to the Asian Seafood Market and stumbled upon bagged,Frozen Lychee while looking for Frozen Durian... I firgured what the heck and took a chance.  I must say!!!!! Frozen Lychee is probably one of the best Fruits that I ever eaten that is able to retain most of its texture and flavor after being frozen. The biggest drop in quality of Frozen Lychee would probably be it's color which loses it beautiful Red sex appeal turning to a nasty rotten looking brown.

The bag said Lychee from China, not sure of the variety.Once the Lychee thawed out and became chilled. I bit into the ugly shell and exposed its near perfect off white classic Lychee Flesh. Juices began to pour out of it just like a recently picked Lychee. The sweetness and flavor just a few notches below the expected quality of what a lychee should taste like. Extremely honey Sweet like a I remember with that mild Lychee complexity, same Grape like texture in a sense. Had a smaller size seed maybe the same size as kaimana or a bit bigger...In a blind tasting, one might be confused with the Frozen variety and the Fresh picked if he wasn't a Lychee lover.

Overall, if your fiening for some Lychee and the season is over, or you jsut don't have the luxury of eating them fresh... Frozen Lychee is definately a decent alternative ***********in my opinion**********. I'm hooked!!! Was about 2-3 dollars a bag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will be stocking the freezer with lychee from now on.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Mature 14 foot Cherry Tree died.
« on: February 17, 2015, 11:58:15 AM »
Sad to say I just lossed a Mature Cherry tree that was already on my Property before I bought my House. I had many dreams of incredible cherry harvests that vanished in a season... What in the hell causes a  Cherry tree do die like that? The tree was neglected for a about a  year while the house sat on the market, but it flowered and flushed last spring. The Leaves did look extremely unhealthy and it dropped almost all the fruit as well, but everyone else on the forum reported lots of  fruit drop as well for the Socal area... I'm assuming some sort of desease hit my Cherry tree considering everything else on my property is happy. Whatever the case is, it's extremely unfortunate.

23
For me, I love a good Peach. Though I heard the newly introduced Pluots are on a whole nother level of greatness.
