Cold Hardy Citrus / 6b/7a overwinter success
« on: April 13, 2024, 01:48:29 PM »
3 in ground trees...Owari Satsuma, Swingle Citrumelo, and Taveres Limequat.....Temps in January.....10 days of mid twenties for high and lower teens for the low.  I used Christmas Lights, styrofoam and plastic. Today April 13....All showing new growth.  The two small plants in the front were pots that are in ground that also overwintered...They are grapefruits that I started from seed.  No winter burn at all.  I also have a Xie Shan and an Arbiguina Olive in another spot that did well.

I live in zone 6b/7a south central Pennsylvania....we had a week in January of temps below 15 degrees F at night and highs around 25 degrees F. in the daytime.  I used styrofoam, leaves, and Christmas lights to protect it.....The tree is in ground.

Cold Hardy Citrus / timing of fertlizer
« on: February 18, 2024, 03:47:39 PM »
I am trying to grow several citrus in ground in zone 7a.  So far so good.   What I am trying to decide is when to fertilize them this spring? Right now our average high and low is 42/27 F.  I have them protected with Christmas lights and styrofoam.  Some do show new growth however.  Any suggestions?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Tremendous Cold Wave coming our way
« on: January 13, 2024, 06:17:57 PM »
I am in zone 7a and planted last spring 3 cold hardy citrus and an Arbiquina olive outside.  I have been preparing for a cold blast like this for at least a month.  It will be interesting to see if my plan works.  I am using Christmas lights, styrofoam, frost blankets, plastic, and straw....Time will tell. Temps are supposed to dip down to the single digits....mid week.  The cold is supposed to last at least a week...

Cold Hardy Citrus / Flying Dragon fruit set sometime after Thanksgiving
« on: December 30, 2023, 02:58:37 PM »
I was very surprised to see this fruit hanging from my flying dragon tree.  It had to have set not long ago.  I live in Zone 7a in South Central Pa.  Our weather has been consistently 5-10 degrees above normal. They usually set in the middle of spring, right?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Ways to protect your citrus trees in ground
« on: October 20, 2023, 07:03:48 AM »
Does anyone use straw/leaves around their citrus trees along with Christmas lights and a cloth covering?  Other low cost measures? If you use leaves is there a particular type that is better? Should they be shredded or whole?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Ave high and low temp
« on: September 20, 2023, 06:24:50 AM »
I am in zone 7 trying to grow several varieties of hardy citrus outdoors.  I have the owari satsuma, swingle citrumelo, Taveres limequat and the Xie Chan.  In order to get fruit to ripen before it gets extremely cold what time in the spring do they need to start flowering and what low temp do I need to maintain in order to get them to  flower to ripen roughly on schedule in the fall?  I overwintered a ponderosa lemon outside last winter.  I understand how to get a citrus to survive 2 degrees F. last year.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Store Bought Grapefruit
« on: March 31, 2023, 05:14:45 PM »
So I started a grapefruit from seed about 5 years ago in a pot.  I kept it indoor in the winter all of those years until last September.  I decided to plant it outside (I live in South Central PA zone 7) and see if I could overwinter it.  I only used 1 string of incandescent Christmas lights and a 100 watt lightbulb....I also made a styrofoam shelter around it and piled up a lot of wood chips...the coldest it got was 2 degree F.  It worked.  Tomorrow is April 1st and it doing well....I will post a photo when I remove all the styrofoam from around it....

« on: December 30, 2022, 04:49:49 AM »
Does anyone know the effects of having 24 hours of light on a citrus plant (100 watt lightbulb) when keeping them warm in the winter?  The normal day/night cycle obviously is thrown off.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Can you order cold hardy citrus
« on: December 04, 2022, 03:10:10 PM »
Is there anyplace to order cold hardy citrus to sample?  I would like to try some different varieties before I decide to buy any more trees?

Okay...so I started a citrus tree ( Ponderosa lemon)  from seed about 6 years ago. I left it in a pot all those years. So I decided to stick it outside in the ground out of the pot and see if I could overwinter it in zone 6b/7a...Red Lion Pennsylvania. I am only using about 150 Watts of electric heat......christmas lights and a 100 watt bulb...I am also using wood chips, styrofoam and 6 mil plastic. We have had several nights at or below 25 degrees F. And guess what it is flowering.....incredible....
