Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Banana variety tastes

I'm familiar with Cavendish and some other varieties but all I have now are Dwarf NamWah, and it's my favorite. Sweet, smooth and creamy, and the trees don't get very tall. The crown never gets taller than 6 feet, so the fruit is easily harvested. Never have more than a few in each mat - one large, one half that size and one small one. This allows the large tree to prosper without having to give up needed nourishment to produce bananas. I happen to have a stalk that emerged a week ago.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango season 2023 versus 2024
« on: March 27, 2024, 09:25:40 AM »
Last year my Glen produced a fair amount of fruit, but because I was trying to get more growth from the tree I removed all of the fruitlets when they were pea size. This year powdery mildew took care of ruining a nice full bloom that I was going to allow to produce fruit, but sadly no fruit at all this year on that tree.

Last year the Maha produced one mature fruit, well almost - as it was beginning to ripen a squirrel knocked it off and chewed into it. This year in spite of a bloom in December and again in Feb/Mar, powdery mildew is taking its toll. The tree does have about 40 viable fruits hanging on it but every day I see a few on the ground, some with bite marks from squirrels. At this rate I will not see any ripe fruit at all.

As much as I love fresh mangos if I had realized how much trouble it would be to keep the fruit from being ruined by squirrels I probably would not have planted them. Somebody tell me some encouraging words please because if I have another year of this I'll be oiling up the chainsaw.  :)

I don't know if this was mentioned but does anyone know if adding a wetting agent to the sulfur/water solution would help with distribution?

Yes it does. Use only wettable sulfur (I would recommend microthiol disperss) and add a spreader sticker according to the instructions on the label.

Much appreciated!

Can someone tell me what's with the gray blooms on my Maha Chanock? Is it mold or is it the weather?

After reading the posts about powdery mildew I realize what happened to all the blooms on my Glenn last month. The tree was in full bloom then they all started turning gray and ashy looking. I thought it was the low temps and strong winds that caused it. I cut them all off and wonder if any more blooms will follow this season.

I also read a publication recently about using salicylic acid root drenches vs oxytetracycline and the sal acid was impressively effective (RE HLB).

Would you happen to have a link to that article?

Kinda weird how mangos grow and flower and fruit from one tree to another. I can't keep my Maha and Glen from blooming and I haven't fed or watered them in about a year. Beautiful 5 year old trees.

My Glen started pushing bloom buds a week ago and is looking really good. My Maha started blooming in late November and now is in various stages from full bloom to pea-size fruitlets.

I read on here from somebody who grows avocados that the best thing you can add to the mound is a healthy ratio of pine bark, mixed right into the soil mix and piled high.

Back in the 90's I successfully grew Ein Sheimer and Anna apples in Hillsborough County Florida. They produced impressive crops every year but the apples were pretty small and not the best eating apples, but they weren't bad. Also grew some Florida Prince freestone peaches which were absolutely delicioso.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Giant loquat tree in Seattle

I used to have a really nice, large loquat tree in Land o Lakes Florida that saw low temperatures around 22 several times and not a lick of damage. I think they could survive unscathed well into the teens.

I have some scale and sooty mold on my Glen mango. Is neem oil suitable to kill the scale, or is there something more effective?

Neem oil will work but it will take many applications which will need to be re applied if it rains. The neem oil can also burn your plants if it’s hot and sunny. Try to rid your tree of ants. You can use tanglefoot to prevent ants from going up your tree and farming the scale.

Once you get rid of the scale. You can use something like Azera combined with a spreader/extender so that the organic insecticide will last longer in rainy conditions. You can also use horticultural oil to suffocate the scale.

Simon

Thanks. I didn't see your post until after I got some Neem Oil Extract and used it this afternoon. It contains INSECTICIDE/FUNGICIDE/MITICIDE all in one. The reviews for using it to kill scale were positive so maybe it will do the job.

Scheduled to get 2-4 inches of badly need rain in the West Central area Saturday and Sunday. Just hoping it comes gradually so it can soak in rather than run off.

My Tango tangerine is in full bloom, a little early I'd say. Anyone else getting blooms?
