Great. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I am growing over 25 varieties of mangoes and evaluating which ones have high and medium vigor. It's a long-term learning process. Listed below are my estimated high vigor varieties. But keep in mind this may change with more time and experience growing. Note: all of my mango trees are on Manila or Ataulfo rootstock. No turpentine due to lack of vigor. The soil is sandy loam with 10% pumice. No heavy or clay soil as this reduces the growth rate and vigor.

I do everything I can to increase vigor and that starts with the soil type then moves up to the rootstock and finally the cultivar. All are very important to maximize mango tree growth in my opinion.

1.  Cotton Candy - Just moved to a larger #25 pot and thus far is growing very well. The root completely filled the smaller #15 pot after only one year.

2.  Fruit Punch - Every graft I have done has grown well. Even the 2022 graft onto my Lemon Zest mango tree is trying to hold fruit. Will remove the Fruit Punch fruit to focus on vegetative growth for the young graft.

3.  Guava - My 2020 Guava graft is now over 1.5" thick and holding numerous fruit. Appears to be vigorous.

4.  Lemon Zest - After a few years in the ground this takes off vertically.

5.  Orange Essence - Appears to be a strong grower. (Orange Sherbet is of Medium Vigor but a more attractive tree.)

6.  Peach Cobber - Every PC graft I have done has grown well.  So far so good. I also have fruit set from a 2020 graft.

I need more time to ascertain with other cultivars have vigor. This list almost certainly change with more experience growing mango trees in California.

@Johnny Eat Fruit: Which one would you consider to be "high vigor" at your location?

Picked up Alphonso mango shipped from India from Indian store. Beautiful colored mangoes Excellent tasting may be little fibers.
Thinking about growing them. Anyone like to grow? it won’t be an Alphonso, just  to try and may be to top work later.

Usually these mangoes are irradiated and seeds don't sprout!

That was my first thought. So I had dug up about 12 inches down and it was still wet (not soaking wet).  Temperature has been mostly in 50s and 60s here.
Can still try to water more - nothing too loose!
Thanks for your suggestion

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why is my Persimmon dying?
« on: May 15, 2023, 11:06:49 AM »
I have an Fuyo Jiro persimmon which has been in ground for 5 years. Suddenly, all the leaves are wilting and it seems to be dying. Can it be Persimmon Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS)?  I don't see the black veins typically described in SDS.

It had a few Matsumoto wase grafts from last year on it and couple of them died few weeks ago and I had cut them off. Tree is irrigated thru a drip system and typically gets 2 gallons once a week. It was watered couple days ago.  I have hard clay soil.

Tree was bought from Home Depot and was grown by Durling Nursery and likely is on Diospyros lotus rootstock.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

I have the same Havahart trap and have noticed that traps is not long enough for some of the squirrels. Squirrel's tail gets stuck under the door which does not close all the way allowing squirrel to escape.

Got mine as well. Thank you Noah.
Are people grafting them now or storing them to graft in March/April when Cherimoyas come out of dormancy?

Hi Mark,

I picked quite a few Xie Shan fruits today off the grafted branch on my multi-grafted tree.  They were large, easy peel, completely seedless and excellent tsting.

They looked different that Kaz's pictures in post # 77 and 97 which also shows some seeds

I have been using these for some time now:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QXT1BQL/

They are made up of a single layer of aluminum, fairly easy to write on and don't break down like the other ones which have card board inside.

Hi Brad,
With weather getting colder, what are their chances of germinating?

Paint markers work much better and last for a long time.  This is the one I use:

Exotica nursery carries a Thai pink which may be similar to these.  I purchased one from Exotica but it has not fruited yet

I had grafted Ponkan and Kinnow at the same time (03/21) as Xie Shan but have zero fruit on them. Grafted Sumo in 10/21 which now has 4-5 fruits.  It seems all the tree energy is going to Xie Shan!
