Just curious. Does java plum get worms? I'm wondering if I should just dig it up now. Like I'm about to do with my loquats

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Carribean fruit fly
« on: December 24, 2023, 03:47:37 PM »
I have carribean fruit fly really bad in my yard. I just picked a bunch of jaboticabas and many of the fruits have worms in them. I really want to set up traps but I'm not sure what to use. I can't really find any specific answer online.

I got a mcphail trap and put the torula yeast in it but it doesn't seem to catch any fruit flies
I keep seeing spinosaid pop up for the fruit fly but I'm not sure how to apply it. I'm hoping someone can recommend a trap that can help with the fruit fly.

I think it might be over 3lbs. I'll have to weigh the next fruit. The tree is a seedling from a variety that was called 'giant'. It seems to be holding up to the name. The tree itself also does really well in my yard. The cold hardly even touches it

Proud to share a pic of this fruit! My tree is about 4 years old.. 20ft tall and has a bunch of huge fruits this year.. and they are very delicious.

Anyone else growing rollinia in FL?

Has anyone had issues with fruit fly worms in their carambola? I found some worms in starfruit that dropped to the ground. I'm wondering if it's from carribean fruit fly. It seems like everything I grow gets worms:(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Spinosad
« on: June 18, 2023, 09:09:22 PM »
I've heard you can use spinosad to get rid of carribean  fruit fly
Can anyone explain how it's used? Do you spray it on the tree? On the fruit? Or is it for a trap

Can anyone explain the process they use. Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / FL fruit fly struggles

Just harvested my grumichamas today and they all had worms. Does anyone know what fruit fly stings them? Is there any bait trap that works on that type of fruit fly?

I'm assuming it's the same one that's stinging my loquats and guavas

I chopped down both my papaya trees. Hopefully that will help

After some research it appears to be the papaya fruit fly. Do you think that bait trap will work against them? On the website it says olive fruit fly.

Does anyone know an attractant for papaya fruit fly? So I can make a bait trap.

Thanks for the link. I ordered one. I get fruit fly so bad in my yard. Papayas don't get more than 2 inches before infected. Loquats all get infected. I bought the FF resistant guava from Lara farms and they get loaded with worms. Now my mangoes too?!? I really hope this bait trap helps

I planted the Ruby supreme 1030 from lara farms. I get worms in every single guava the tree gives me. Maybe I just have fruit fly really bad in  my area :/

That's awesome! Do you have to deal with fruit Flys/worms in your peaches that far north? I'd imagine not.

I know we have a lot of members here in FL.
I'm just curious what your absolute favorite fruit tree is in your yard and why. Maybe after talking about it.. it will help others know about it/make them want to plant one.

For me I think it's my seedling Rollinia tree. It gives me tons of fruit and they are my favorite thing to eat from the yard. A close second is sweet tart mango. I have lots of other fruit trees that haven't fruited yet so the list might change in the years to come!

They seem to have a slow death after winter. I guess it's the cold that gets them

Why does every abiu I plant die. It's the only tree I haven't been able to get going. 10a FL

Sorry to change topic a bit. It just seems there a bunch of people in here that are familiar with abiu

I planted them in ground at the end of my property because I know they aren't supposed to need much care. I mulched them pretty heavily and typically only water them if it hasn't rained in a while.
