Tropical Fruit Discussion / Patience is a Virtue - 1st Sabara flowers
« on: March 10, 2023, 12:27:07 PM »
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
In 1016 I went to a local nursery who told me they had jaboticaba trees. After they searched for over a week, those small trees were found hidden among the crepe myrtle trees, and I came home with a 3 foot tall sabara.  Since there was no label on it, I turned to the Plinia Prince Adam to identify it for me and began my educational journey into these truly amazing fruit trees and settled in collecting other varieties that will reportedly begin fruiting long before the "wolf".
After 6 winters of being wheeled in its 30 gallon pot in and out of the garage, the long awaited discovery -  buds are forming in small clusters along the trunk of the now over 6 ft. tall tree !!!  These pictures don't do it justice but here are just a couple of the long awaited buds, hoping fruit will set and I will finally get to taste what y'all have been raving about ....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pitomba Eugenia SP runners?
« on: June 21, 2022, 01:28:59 AM »
My grumichama was over 12 years old when the February '21 Snow Pocalyse killed every fruit tree in my front yard.  This March I noticed small shoots cropping up in my front lawn, some about 20 ft. from where the grumi was. I dug out about a dozen, runners attached and left 1 to grow in the front.

I potted all of them up, now have about 8 that are surviving so far.  That tree was not strong enough to survive, but wanted its offspring to make it 1.5 years later.

Nature is amazing!

Hi Stela,
Yours is peeling, and that is a good sign that flowers will be coming soon. I bought my pitomba with fruit on it, so not sure how long you will have to wait. Have also been told that the fruit improves as the tree matures, so don't get discouraged if the 1st fruits are not too tasty ... mine are delicious!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First fruits on my Pitomba
« on: May 31, 2022, 03:58:28 PM »
I have been told that pitomba doesn't always come true to seed. I feel lucky that mine is so delicious!  Mine is in a huge pot, but still able to move inside during the winter. I do have a bit of die back, but the tree has good shape, and put on about 60 fruits this year.  We love this fruit!

Happy Gardening to all.

I suggest compost, peat, perlite, azomite, and and acid lover's fertilizer like Espoma Hollytone, or Microlife for acid loving plants. See my new post for pic and video of my tree.

Happy gardening!

My pitomba harvest has begun! About 2 months from flower to fruit and they are so yummy! Once they start to turn color, they ripen within days

It’s not really a sweet fruit at all.
If you’d like, can send you fruits in a few months and you can taste and see if you want to start some seeds.
/quote]  Thanks for your generosity and YES please ... hope they will germinate and grow quickly.
I will owe you for sure, so let me know if there is anything growing in my yard you would like.

I am pretty sure I saw this plant for sale on Flying Fox Fruits a bit ago when I picked up some Jaboticaba.  Take a peek over there?  Nice guy and really helpful on this forum.

Adam sells the Barbados Cherry/Acerola different tree, but thanks.

Have not found a source for trees, so if anyone has decent, sweet fruiting tree and could sell me an airlayer or cuttings or seeds, I would be most grateful.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / WTB Capulin Cherry - Prunus Salicifolia tree
« on: February 21, 2022, 07:35:38 PM »
I recently saw a post in the Texas Rare Fruit Growers group and checks all my boxes for desirable.
The capulin cherry Prunus Salicifolia is a hardy, early to fruit tree. It is a hardwood that can grow quite tall. These true tropical cherry trees are unique to their species as they are extremely heat tolerant. In addition, they are evergreen to at least 19F with no limb damage.

I also read that the seeds can take as long as 2 years to germinate, so I am looking for air-layered young trees from the sweet variety from a seller willing to ship.

If you or anyone you know can help, I would truly appreciate it, as I am still trying to re-establish my front yard fruit orchard after losing over a dozen trees in last year's SnowPocalypse.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / growing Sweet Tamarind
« on: February 14, 2022, 01:21:52 AM »
I am curious to know if any of you grow the Sweet Tamarind Tree - Tamarindus indica?

Did you grow from seed, or buy a fruiting tree or something in between.  How long till producing and how tall now?

I have read that mature trees can tolerate 26 deg F, can handle drought and heat to 113 deg F. And they can live over 200 years.  This seems like a good one to grow for me, and I love the taste of the fruit!
Your thoughts will be appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / WTB Inga Congesta - can anyone help ?
« on: September 22, 2021, 07:35:32 PM »
Hello Fellow Inga Lovers,

I want to obtain fruit / seeds of the Inga Congesta.

If anyone can help a girl out, it will be greatly appreciated.

I am very interested in growing the Inga Congesta. The flowers are beautiful and it is native to the Atlantic Coast of Brazil.

It can be grown in a pot and will fruit while still small, which makes me think I can move it in the winter to protect against the occasional cold nite of Houston winter.

If anyone has this cultivar fruiting, I would love to see pictures and hopefully buy some fruit/seeds for a taste test.  Even if it has an inferior flavor, I could grow it as root stock and graft the feuillei onto it.

Any advise is appreciated. Thanks and Happy Gardening !!

Hi Cassio,

I would love to grow this smaller inga congesta, the flowers are beautiful and I would protect it if we get the occastional cold spell in the winter.

I just tasted what I think is the feuillei and the pod looks very similar.

Is yours fruiting yet ? Would you be able to sell to the USA ?

Just crawled out the bushes and no sign of runners.

Haven't tried air layering.
Picked up a tree locally from PIN for $30 - 35 couple of years ago; nice sized 3 gallon.
I have purchased from Pine Island and their pricing is reasonable, but last time was quite some time ago, and their shipping is so expensive that I almost always buy locally or start seeds these days.

Thanks for the insight.
Happy Gardening !!

hi Roblack

have you gotten runners starting ?  I have read that those can be separated to form new trees. Also that air layering can work.  Any thoughts there ?  Did you start with seeds or buy a tree ?

Thanks and Happy Gardening !!

Hi Fellow Gardeners,

I am looking for Cinnamomum zeylanicum, true cinnamon seedlings, or seeds. Can anyone tell me how long seeds are viable and the best method for getting them off to a healthy start.

I live on the gulf coast of Texas, and know I will have to protect if we get a tough winter, but any insight on cold tolerance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Roblack,

You have quite a collection and I really appreciate seeing all the individual plants, but am quite curious as to how it looks as a landscape. Any chance you can make a video walking thru your landscape? It would give me more of an idea as to how to integrate more trees with tighter proximity as I feel I am running out of room. I only have about 1/3 acre house pool etc. have some shade issues to contend with also. I look forward to viewing the "whole picture".
TIA
