Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: LF Annona jamaicensis
« on: May 27, 2023, 04:15:09 PM »
Wow! I was unaware of this species. I know the species name applies to the country it is endemic to, but it shares the name with my first hunting partner, Buteo jamaicensis, the red tailed hawks. Before my main passion became growing rare fruits, it was growing psilocybin mushrooms, before that it was growing Cannabis, and before all my botanical passions in my life my msim passion was falconry... my first red tailed hawk was named "Bella", which is why I'm trying to track down Manilkara bella seeds/plants...
It's interesting how our past and present interests influence the one another.

Now I need this Annona sp....

Doesn’t look like it
Did anyone ever source any seeds?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Psidium germination tips
« on: April 26, 2023, 02:49:15 PM »
I've collected psidium species in the past four months, and not one has sprouted.

I have had them in moist peat moss in the warm Fl sun for about 1-2 months; the seeds are still hard, not rotten. Should I soak them in ga3 for a day?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best tasting Plinia?
« on: March 23, 2023, 12:06:18 PM »
Looking to start a collection of them soon but due to seed-to-fruit time being so long on this genus id rather wait a long while for the best tasting ones instead of random varieties.

I just added a couple of Kwai Muks [Artocarpus parvus - wrongly called A. hypargyreus] which are in 5 gals. but have taken off briskly right after repotting them, already making new terminal growth and leaves.  They are supposed to be cold tolerant down to 25ºF so we'll see if they are after a warm season of growing this year.

Also added two small Olosapos [Couepia polyandra] out of curiosity.  These will have to be given some protections from the cold I suspect, but they're worth a gamble.

Fingers X-ed!

Can Kwai muk bear fruit in pots?

seeds still available? Still viable

According to the table on the first page of this discussion, paw paw has approximately 2,000 times the annonacin content of atemoya. Presuming this was indeed the causitive factor,  I would need to consume over 600,000 lbs of atemoya pulp in 10 years to get the same effect. Put another way, that is  167 pounds a day for 10 years. I think I'm safe.

This is great news, here I was thinking being an Annona Enthusiast was a death sentence

Similar to the Asunta line, is anyone working on their range of hybrids or breeding line for special traits such as the sweetest fruit, fastest-growing, (I forgot the term but) a plant that flowers early or heavily, etc.
My first hybrid to start my breeding line is Monocanthus x Undatus

If you do breed df, what tips do you have? What genetics to get into my line next? what genetics to leave out? These were just some questions I thought of just now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Abiu finally producing
« on: September 08, 2022, 08:56:10 PM »
It is common for seedling abiu to be bland and watery tasting, which is why some nurseries only sell grafted plants.  The Z varieties I’ve tried are very tasty with hints of vanilla and caramel

Is there anywhere to buy a grafted one online?

20
that orange annona is spinescens.

Its not spinescens for sure. Im growing spinescens and the leaf structure and growth habit is different.

Isn’t it a smaller tree also? Dwarf?

21
Seeds taken by customs, first batch earlier this year came in fine. What’s up with that

22
No shipping for the smaller plants?💔

Hello: you have to be careful about two things: first, it is a very rare species, originally obtained from Helton by a collector from my country, then I received a plant, I had fruits after a few years because it took a long time to produce. Be careful because it grows very very fast, it gets out of control in creeper mode and climbs all the trees in your garden! It is not for small spaces.

Secondly, it is not known if the fruit does not have certain toxic components, according to Helton there are many nutritional studies on the matter, but a friend of mine says that he got poisoned, so you have to be careful. It leaves my lips itchy, so it may be true about its toxicity.

24
I don’t want any leaves or anything to end up making their dogs sick, considering all parts of theobroma affect them

25
Ahh I see, thank you
