Not the best reference, but here’s my setup:

I live in an apartment.

Normally, I move the plants inside around mid-October and take them back out in mid-March, when daytime temperatures are consistently around 15°C.

In winter, indoor temperatures range between 15°C and 22°C. I have a south-facing window, and I place glasses of water around the plants to help with humidity.

I use two Sansi 35-watt grow lights. They're on for 6 hours a day, which should be enough for 4–6 small plants.
There are better options out there, like these: [https://www.geturbanleaf.com/blogs/lighting/best-led-screw-in-grow-light-bulbs](https://www.geturbanleaf.com/blogs/lighting/best-led-screw-in-grow-light-bulbs)

Citrus grown from seed tends to grow slowly.
Citrus grafted onto rootstock is a different story.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: growing citrus in an apartment

I think the possibilities in terms of variations are limited on Yuzu or verna as a rootstock.
I should try grafting on the Venrna plants to see what the result can be.
(In my opinion they do well outside all year round in zone 8)
it's a pitty there is little information known for both.

what kind of potting mix do you use?

Cold Hardy Citrus / growing citrus in an apartment
« on: April 21, 2025, 02:23:30 PM »
What can be the best rootstock for someone living in an apartment, zone 8?

personally I don't have a good experience with swingel (top stem dies, rootstock stays alive)
I am currently testing FA5
and I'm thinking of trying poncirus trifoliata.

I hope someone can say "this is the best rootstock" before I waste money on it again.

i had 2 lemon trees (see photos below)
that were grown from seed in early 2018.
i think they are Verna lemons?
(standard lemon from a supermarket)

They had less problem being brought in during the winter and being outside during the summer.
for the last 3 winters they were kept  outside (not anymore with me)

i find it a bit strange,
because a lemon tree apparently experiences less stress than my grafted trees,

@1rainman,

your brew is toxic for people (nicotine poisoning)  :)
and i know my grandad used it for weed control.
but how react citrus plants on it? (in the long run)

Don't know the exact age of the plant,
i have them 3 years.

The Meyer is still fine,
nothing unusual.

The Meiwa on the other hand is loosing it leaves,
The leaves are still green, no damage.
New growth stops growing,
branches are getting brown.
First tought was root rot, or something with the soil.
The roots are looking healthy,
The graft point is still looking good

overall the other citrus are doing good,
same conditions.

It is a know issue for Meiwa,

For Meyer,
i don't know how and when,
but is better to use it as budwood for it dies.

Citrus General Discussion / swingel rootstock
« on: January 26, 2025, 01:18:30 PM »
3 years ago i bought 2 citrus trees (meyer lemon and meiwa kumquat) on Citrumelo Swingle 4475.

Both are not compatible with swingel,
lesson learned  ...

The meyer i will buy again from a cutting or on FA5.

But i'm not sure for the meiwa kumquat,
is it compatible with FA5,
or is poncirus trifoliata the better option?

Can i reuse the swingel rootstock by cutting below the grafpoint,
or is that a no go?

thanks

i have a question about the seeds from hybrids,
what % do you have for a seed to be "true to seed"?

is it possible to see it, at the structure of the seed,
or ... ?

i did some reading about FA5
and could not find any cons about it.

Does someone have experience with FA5 as rootstock in containers for zone 8?

« on: July 22, 2024, 12:25:52 PM »
Hello,

i have some trouble with my meyer lemon

some leaves from my meyer lemon turning dark/green and yellow,
also she makes a lot of flowers
and doesn't make mutch new growth

it can be stress,
the weather in Belgium is swinging from hot to cold ...

the meyer is grafted on a swingle rootstock.

my fingerlime on the other hand is doing great
same treatment

Citrus General Discussion / fungi and bacteria potting soil
« on: April 03, 2024, 12:32:16 PM »
So,
I mixed some blood, bone, and fish fertilizer along with vermicompost into the topsoil of my citrus plants this weekend.
After watering it,
I later added some vulcanic dust.

It appears that fungi and bacteria have taken a liking to it,
as evidenced by the yellow dots and white cloudy formations (see picture).
I don't think it's a bad sign.

Does anyone have experience with this mixture?
