Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cogshall...is it ready to pick??
« on: May 18, 2023, 03:39:23 PM »

I have a few of these Cogshall mangos that is starting to blush, they are getting a lot of direct sun so I know that's part of the reason for the color blushing but was wondering if they are mature enough to pick and let ripen on the counter? Trying to beat the squirrels but don't want to pick too soon only to let it rot  :(

Any thoughts?? Thanks in advance   :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango weed wacker damage
« on: May 11, 2023, 10:10:34 AM »
Julie, i made these for all my young trees.  Besides protecting from weed whacker, protects from bumping it.  Ive had one almost knocked over, another gouged from mower.
2x6x12 cut into 4.  Long screws hold them together.  Pre drill board its not screwing in.
Carpet has no backing.  This one was around Avocado that doesn't need it.
I tied low fruit up since photo.

Nice little set up Eddie, I assume the carpet also keeps the weeds out plus a nice cushion for the mango should they fall.

Good Luck Julie, hope your fruits and trees recover but I think it will, I had something similar happen to my Cogshall mango tree, it wasn't a weed whacker or animal, just something like a wound appeared out of nowhere a little larger than yours but the tree healed over several months and the tree shows no issues from it many years later...keep fingers crossed it will fully recover.

Thanks for the updates and recipe corrections Palmcity.

Yeah, I definitely wash all my mango drops really well before I eat it even though I do not eat the peel, just got into the habit, we have SO many Critters running around here I don't want to take any chances  :)

We need more rain sooo badly, we did have 6 inches almost 2 weeks ago doled out in 2 different days one week apart but we need more... I think part of the problem with the drops besides the heavy winds is the drought...

29

Had around 25 or so dropped mangoes from that very gusty day  :'( >:( on the ground so far...very heart breaking. I can't or won't be able to use most of them so I will leave those for the critters, a few of them have chew marks or claw marks on them so they are already "tasting" them. Its going to be a battle again this year!

Interesting your wife adding boiled mangoes to yellow cake mix, might give that atry thanks Palmcity!

30

Fingers crossed everyone's mangoes that's left on the trees stay put, let's hope these really gusty days are far and few between  ;)

My mangoes have at least a month or more before they are "mature green" to let ripen inside.

Calusa I hope your single Maha makes it till its ready to pick, good luck!

Palmcity, mine are still pretty small appx 4", so no color whatsoever, totally green. The Thai green mango salad wasn't too bad, better than throwing them away Lol...

31

We're VERY windy today...30 plus mph! While taking pictures of my Maha, 3 small Mahas fell to the ground one by one due to the branches hitting each other. I had to come inside I am afraid to look tonight to see how many mangoes are going to be on the ground  :'( :'( >:( >:(

Couldn't bare to throw them away, I might make green mango salad

Thanks for the very generous offer SC, I don't do well with grafting Lol...but I do appreciate your kind offer. Congrats on your 20 year old Fuyu, that is amazing!! I should be good with these 2 Persimmons. I really don't have much room to add any more fruit trees. I'll be happy to get some fruits from my Fuyu hopefully in a year or 2. In the meantime I will have to go to one of those "U Pick Persimmon Farms this fall. I found a place about an hour and a half away and she had some great Fuyus!

Thanks again and best of luck with your fruits!

33

Thanks John!! I will remove it now  :)...not a fan of beer either but love Okra and many different types of fruits...

Great news and great looking Persimmon trees Sc400!

I prefer Fuyu I'm not a huge fan of the super soft persimmons (astringent) type. I like to eat them more like an apple, sweet and crunchy. Actually my Chocolate was missing a lable and was told it was likely a Fuyu (not!!) but shortly after I planted it one of the flowers formed a fruit and it was cone like shape so I knew right away it wasn't a Fuyu. At the time he was selling only 2 different varieties. That one fruit fell off shortly after so I was never able to taste it. If my Chocolate fruits in a year or two I'm probably going to use them for baking Persimmon bread  ;D

34

Both Fuyu and Chocolate persimmon trees are flushing with Fuyu way ahead. Also found a few flowers on Fuyu, its a very good sign at least.

Question, I have a small branch emerging very low on the tree but it is above the graft, should I remove this?

Thanks Palmcity and Galatians for the great advise on leaving the Lychee leaves as mulch! As it so happens, I raked the first batch of dead/yellow leaves several weeks ago thinking I needed to remove them  :o. I'm sure this made it even worse by drying out even more without any protection on the top soil from the sun ...it has since another batch have fallen so I will leave those under the tree (plus it saves me time and energy raking) so that's even better! I definitely have enough lychee leaves on the top to make a nice mulch...thanks again!

36

John, good luck with your Lychee tree. I'm fortunate that my Lychee tree normally gets enough chilling hours to get blooms, but other factors sometimes happens to bring the fruit to maturity  ::)...if its not freeze its lack of water or something else **sigh**. Such is life as a fruit tree grower I guess.

Galatians, I agree and will be more aware next year about watering :o)...it drizzled here off on yesterday and only received a tenth of an inch! We need rain so badly. Yet I heard parts of South Florida Ft. Lauderdale I think received 20"-25" inches of rain!!

37

I have 10 year old Lychee that had a decent amount of baby fruits this year, last year the freeze damaged all the blooms... but apparently due to the very, very dry and super windy days we have been having lately caused all my baby fruits to fall and now a ton of leaves are shedding also. I didn't give it any supplemental water because I thought since it was an established tree it didn't need it but obviously I am wrong! Even though the birds and the squirrels eat 90% of them and they eat them before they are ripe so basically they don't leave me any anyways, it  is still sad to see them all fall off  :'(...and now I have all the leaf drop issues from this drought!

Anyone else having this issue? Maybe it is just me... Next year I will water the tree more regularly if it is another very, very dry winter...

38

Skhan, Congrats on your new growths and flowers!

Fruitnoob, I haven't noticed any ants on my trees but thanks for the heads up, I will check them often...

Dm, good to know what I can use if I see them. Hopefully, I won't need it.

39

Thanks for the info Fruitnoob and TNTrobbie!

40

One Question... how often are you guys watering your very young Persimmon trees right now? It's been very dry here and very hot so I have been watering every 3 or 4 days. Is that fine or too much? Thanks in advance.

41

Thanks everyone for all your help and advise, appreciate the tip about the bark scratch test. I did take a small paring knife and lightly peeled a very small piece of the bark and it was green so fingers crossed it's still alive...I will give it to the end of April and see what happens. I did give it some water and light liquid fertilizer too so hopefully it will wake up soon  :)

Tntrobbie, yours flushed fairly early
Jordan, good luck with yours...I'm sure it will fine if you are seeing 2 little buds  :)
Fliptop your Suruga tree is looking great!
Fruitnoob, glad to hear your tree is waking up also.
Flgarden, it's weird your Fuyu is the last to wake up, just shows us how the different varieties react to our growing area.

RS Congrats that your Fuyu is flowering! Great picture! I hope I see some on my tree. Thanks also for letting me know the flowers come after the leaf flush. I'll post a picture when my Fuyu has more leaves and hopefully a few flowers! I'll update "if" the Chocolate leafs out...Thanks again!

42
I planted 2 Persimmon trees last April (chocolate) and May ( Fuyu),...then Hurricane Ian hit Sept 30th and pretty much ripped out all the leaves and beat up the poor little tree. I didn't know if it was still alive but watered it on a regular schedule just in case. A few days ago my Fuyu started sending out some very small leaf flush but my Chocolate (purchased and told was a Fuyu, had no label) shows NO sign of life, I'm not sure if this variety is super sloooow to show signs of life, any one else have their Persimmons flushing and or blooming in Florida?

If anyone knows, how long do I wait before I declare it dead  :o
Also, do flowers appear after the new leaf flush? The new growths are too small to tell now and this is my first time growing Persimmons.

Thanks!!

Wow! Nice trees, that's a lot of mangoes. looks like a great year!

I have a Glenn in a pot that eventually and now permanently live in a 40 plus gallon nursery pot that produced fruits every year...here's a few pictures of fruits many years ago. About 5 years ago I placed it underneath two inground mango trees near my Oak trees and it has permanently rooted itself to the ground now so it is very dwarf for being in the pot for almost 16 years! I will leave it there till it dies Lol...can't move it even if I wanted to at this point. It gives me 5-10 fruits every years except when we have a killing freeze  :(

Good Luck with your potted mango trees Paul!

Great pics everyone!

My Maha seems quite prolific this year, though I know I will most likely lose 98% of these baby fruitlets its still pretty impressive to see so many in one panicle  :D

We only get one week of Spring and one week of Fall in many places in Florida Lol...it's very sad! I heard this February is one of the hottest on record for us, several places breaking above high records. I've lived here for 30 years and I've never seen temps this hot for February! It's awful...I hope summer isn't going to be worse!!! Our winter temps are getting less and less  :-\

Awesome everyone! Fingers crossed this is going to be a great mango season for us all  :)

My Cogshall is loaded with blooms, I actually have Maha on the left and a 45 gallon potted Glenn underneath and Cogshall all growing together Lol... on that Oak island. The Maha (far left) is just starting to bloom so it's hard to see blooms on the picture.

Maha, black potted Glenn and Cogshall growing together

My Glenn taken at dusk as the sun was setting, making the leaves and blooms orangy bronzy color...
