Really only you after tasting all 3 can make that call. I suspect Booth would be the loser for most people but all three are good. Booth is less sweet, has a less intense flavor and more seeds.

Thanks for the seeds FLNative. It was a pleasant surprise getting a nice red hybrid fruit to sample. It was yummy.

Seeds arrived well cleaned and fresh. Thanks for the extras. Fingers crossed for good germination and favorable fruit characteristics eventually.

Citrus General Discussion / Gotta hate and love Home Depot.
« on: August 03, 2020, 07:07:47 PM »
Home Depot never ceases to amaze and infuriate me. Went today specifically for peat moss and vermiculite. Out of both. Walked all over the garden area hoping to find a misplaced bag or 2 since I did not want to go to Lowe’s. Wouldn’t you know it saw a 15 gallon standard color finger lime holding quite a few fruit. 1” trunk and at least 6’ tall. $99. Got it. Went to load her up and found 15 mature ripe finger limes in the container. Just one tree mixed with general citrus. Will plant her tomorrow. The limes have mature seeds. Are they worth germinating?

I am planning to start about 100 Sabara seeds with the hope of having at least 50 graftable rootstocks in a year or 2. Sabara is common so I am hoping to get seeds for under a dollar each. One kind individual has offered to provide seed in a month or two when they have fruit. To be honest we did not discuss price. I would probably start more than 100 to ensure my 50 rootstocks if you have some to sell. Also it might be good to have “Sabara” from more than one source. There may be enough variation among Seeds from different mother plans that some make for great rootstock and others don,t.

Bump. Reread my post and realized that I am asking for something for nothing. OK I am not assuming people will send me seeds for free. Anyone with a very productive Sabara that is not Already selling their seeds for over $1 each already be interested in selling me seeds for my project. Obviously it does not need to be all at once or from just one individual.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jaboticaba rootstocks???
« on: July 31, 2020, 04:58:45 PM »
Apparently of the varieties we commonly have, Sabara does better tolerating less than ideal PH and salinity. It also is less likely to develop micronutrient issues or so I have read. Which varieties graft well to Sabara? We probably need to talk to Adam at flyingfox and/or do a search of agricultural research into jaboticabas in Brazil etc..

I want to start a bunch of Sabara jaboticaba seedlings for grafting experiments as they get big enough a couple of years from now. My aim is to graft mature scion wood from varieties that do not do well in the ground in SoCal on their own roots to Sabara stock.  Anyone who is now enjoying sabara fruits and tossing the seeds please consider mailing them to me so I can learn to graft. Donators will be first in line for grafted plants at very reasonable cost if I have some success. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Hi. My name is Mike. Really loving this website. I have dabbled in subtropical and tropical fruits for 30 years while working as a physician. As part of my transition to retirement,(not quite there yet) I moved to a property in San Diego county and have started a new orchard. So far have the following in the ground, all planted since last October:

Cherimoya--about 10 varieties.
Atemoya 2 varieties.
Ilama 2 varieties.
Pecan 2 varieties.
Almond 2 varieties.
Apples about 6 varieties.
Approximately 20 stonefruit including apricots, peaches, plums nectarines, pluots.
2 Jujubes.
6 Avocado varieties.
2 pomegranits.
6 fig trees.
Macademia.
1 chestnut.
Canistel.
Ceylon gooseberry.
4 different Mulberries.
Sabara and Paulista Jaboticaba.
Hap ip and Kaimana lychee.
1 finger lime.
1 each washinton navel orange, Persian sweet lemon, Valencia orange, Minneola tangelo, and clementine tangerine.
2 sapodilla,
Purple passiaon fruit.
3 varieties of pink and red dragonfruit.
2 papaya varieties.

I am sure I missed a few. Also have a large vegetable garden. Want to put in a nice size greenhouse for seedlings and ultratropicals within the year. I am really enjoying my transition and look forward to learning a lot from forum members. Life is much easier when you can learn from other peoples experiences.

Ordered a thermal night scope to try to get an edge--NOT JOKING. I will sleep better if I can rid my orchard of destructive critters before bedtime. If I begin to feel mercy I will think about my two devastated almond trees. They look like Brad put a dozen shotgun blasts through each of them >:(

Brad that sounds so satisfying. Currently I am using a .22 air rifle. I hate squirrels, rats and gophers. Squirrels the worst. Hope you don,t use that method in your greenhouse.

Wow I never knew ground squirrels could be so destructive. Have started thinning them out with an air rifle. Any other suggestions?

Would any of us really want to escalate the situation by confronting the thief, who may not wait for you to throw the first punch? Just saying.

121
Thanks. I am now on there list.

122
Please PM me if you have any trees to sell.

123
I am looking for a source, Nursery or forum member, from which I could get some finger lime varieties in California other than standard green. Probably a longshot but thanks in advance for any suggestions.

124
Lol. Got a little less lazy and did some reading. Apparently Wichita is the best followed by Mohawk and Mahan.
