Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garcinia rootstock
« on: September 19, 2015, 01:16:48 PM »
I was gobbling up a bunch of Garcinia intermedia (Lemon Drop Mangosteen) off of a well established tree yesterday and saved a bunch of the seeds. Has anyone used this as a rootstock for other garcinias?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Beneficial nematodes
« on: September 15, 2015, 07:54:42 PM »
If anyone is ordering beneficial nematodes make sure you check them upon arrival. I had to have a package resent 3 times before I got a live batch from a larger reputable source. These little buggers are expensive and time consuming to apply so make sure it isn't a waste. You need to look under a microscope and there is info on the interwebs on how they should look and move. They seem to have worked wonders on my diaprepes population but I also drenched them two separate times with enough for 1 acre. My lot is only 1/4 - 1/5 acre residential yard. I can only imagine how many people get ripped off and think that it just didn't work.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Endomycorrhizal fungi
« on: September 15, 2015, 07:45:51 PM »
I found some mycorrhizae growing on my Azadi pomegranate roots when I dug it up from in ground to move it to a container. I don't remember if this was inoculated with Mykos brand or the Glomus intradicces I ordered from thehydrosource off of ebay. I need to keep better notes. I was super excited when I saw this and reinoculated in its new home. I have been putting this stuff on the roots of everything I have been planting.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / stepping up passiflora blueberries
« on: August 31, 2015, 11:47:00 AM »
I am setting up some large wicking pots for passion vine and blueberries and I would like to really jump up the pot size. It is especially important for the passion vine since that has to be trained in place on a trellis. I was hoping that since these have somewhat shallow spreading root systems they would be ok ignoring the proper stepping up rules as long as I monitored the moisture level. The pots are also "root pruning" with air holes in the sides so in theory they should help the roots spread out and hopefully prevent them from shooting straight down and becoming root bound on the bottom of the pot. I realize this wont work for most tropical fruit trees but since these have naturally shallow, spreading roots I am crossing my fingers. Does anyone have any experience or tips with this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba ID
« on: July 12, 2015, 06:49:50 PM »
I purchased this a while back and it was sold to me as a plain old Jaboticaba. Is this a Sabara? The new growth is very light and then hardens off into the normal green color. I will hopefully get fruit soon since I feel some small fruiting spurs forming on the largest trunk. Thanks for any help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sabara 5 Jaboticaba
« on: July 12, 2015, 03:14:29 PM »
I picked up a Sabara 5 Jaboticaba from a nursery a while back. Does anyone know anything about this cultivar? I can't seem to find any info on it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon fruit pests and fruit drop
« on: June 01, 2015, 07:36:26 PM »
Hi guys. I have tons of flowers from different types of dragon fruit. Nothing has set yet and I am finding these worms in many of my spent flowers and dying fruit. Does anyone know what these are? I have done a bit of research and nothing comes up. I am hoping it is just from the rains recently but I don't think it is. I had a couple fruit set last year without hand pollinating but the vines were pretty young. This year I have tons of flowers but major bug issues. HELP! If you click on the pic it will play the video. You can see the little white larvae with red heads.

One of my fruit clubs are having their annual tree sale and it is a biggie. There are about 20 vendors and it is indoors. The convention center is Palmetto just north of Bradenton, not too far from I-75. I'll be running around all day so come say hi to Vernmented aka Josh and buy some of those rare trees you have been after.

I was digging this out to put in a french drain or swale to help with the soggier part of my yard and I realized maybe I should just dig it out a bit more and fill it with biochar and compost and whatnot and keep a small swale running back towards the main drainage swale (where I am standing while taking the picture) with a gentle grade and plant it out. The plants can soak up the excess water and the nutrient run off and hide the neighbors fence. From the fence to the trellis post with dragon fruit is 5 feet wide and it stretches about 75 feet. Do you think I could coerce a jaboticaba hedge to about 3.5 feet wide and 6 feet tall? Maybe throw some Pickering mangoes in there or Grumichama or other eugenia species? What like wet feet and can be somewhat contained. There is plenty of sun here as this runs along the south side of my property line. It isn't always soaked over there but I know the summer rains will be coming soon enough and this would be way more fun than throwing some rocks in a small ditch. How close have you seen Jaboticabas planted? Anyone have any pictures of a Eugenia hedge? How much water can a mango take? It seems from what I read they are fine soaking it up in the summer time. What would you do?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pigeon pea/ice cream bean/nitrogen fixers
« on: April 21, 2015, 12:43:00 PM »
Does anyone use pigeon pea or ice cream beans as a support species? I have been using them for chop and drop mulch for nutrient cycling, fast carbon pathways, and nitrogen fixation. Have about 10 moderately mature pigeon peas I chop back to about 18 inches and one larger ice cream bean I chopped back to 4 feet (I want to get some fruit off of that one). I have about 8 other ice cream beans about 6 months old and just planted out about 50 more pigeon peas today. This is in a small residential yard but I figured the density would be fine since I keep everything coppiced. Everything else is under 2 years old except the 4 citrus trees and a couple of palms that were already established so there is plenty of sun. This seems to be working well so far. I am working on establishing sunshine mimosa and perennial peanut across the entire garden. Does anyone on here use similar permaculture type methods? Any advice, pictures, or observations?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedless avocado variety
« on: February 16, 2015, 01:23:31 PM »
I had a friend tell me about a seedless avocado variety he was eating when he was somewhere in Central or South America. I've heard it mentioned in somewhere else as well. Does anyone know the name or have tried to fruit it? I figured if anyone knew it would be this forum. Thanks!
