Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Illama germination
« on: July 27, 2021, 11:09:13 AM »
I recently had good germination success with some ilama seeds. First i cracked open the seed slightly with some pliers, just enough to break the seal. I then soaked for about 10 hrs in a weak GA3 solution (eyeballed it but less than 600ppm). Rinsed and continued soaking in fresh water for another 10-12 hours. Stuck all the seeds in a big pot and have almost every one of those little guys coming up now after only 3 weeks!. I believe freshness of seeds is the biggest factor of germination success.

Awesome, please let me know when lalijiwa and ilama are ready!!

You are lucky, he sent me 4 seedlings that were all dead on arrival. Still waiting to hear how this will be resolved as i didnt order seedlings in the first place... He ran out of seeds and upgraded me without asking and now i just have dead plants...

@spencerw which nuts are your favorite taste wise eaten raw? I dont cook my produce and am not interested in any that require being roasted. Mahalo

65
Thanks for the replies! Should have been more specific in that i want seeds that can be eaten raw/ minimal pastuerization. So jackfruit is out i think since ive read they need to be cooked. Defintely going to look into those trees mentioned! And i eat the caimito seed with the fruit.

66
Aloha, as the title is hinting, im looking for tropical fruits with edible nut(raw) and tropical nut trees. Im familiar with macadamia nuts, malabar chestnuts, cashew, pulasan and caimito. What else is out there? Ive heard of java almond, is it tasty? Im relatively low elevation and cant grow tropic adapted temperate trees like apricot. Mahalo

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Breadfruit survey

Interesting that breadfruits dont like 19 latitude amd further down there, they grow effortlessly here in Hawaii. We only appear to have one type of durian being commercially grown but get plenty of rambutans and mangosteens.

Funny how makuu market doesnt make the cut. Mostly filipinos selling the same crap except for a couple of vendors. Thanks for sharing that resource

Not a fan of ranking things in general, but do enjoy a tops list of favorite fruits. Originally from Seattle and so was spoiled with awesome blueberries, mountain strawberries, pink lady apples, ranier cherries( best on planet!) Etc.. Now i live off grid on the big island of Hawaii with over 80 species of fruits planted on my first acre. New list after living here for my 3rd year would have to include: emperor lychee, soursop/rollinia, black jade pineapples, jaboticabos, and mangoes. Not sure which mango varieties are my favorite but have had excellent hadens from Kona side. I live in wet puna and so have limited options of mangoes that i can get to set fruit. Currently have a grafted nam doc mai and a mangifera casturi tree. We have a mystery mango that was gifted as well, i may just top work it with grafts though. Also, ive got a stupid amount of fruits growing that ive never tried yet including lots of annonas so this list will for sure change as my palette experiences new wonders

Would you be able to ship the ppc atemoya bareroot? Hawaii wont allow any organic soils to be shipped in but are okay with bare roots in any non soil medium like peat moss or coco coir. Mahalo
