Tropical Fruit Discussion / Making Guacamole with fatty avocados?
« on: September 25, 2024, 02:20:59 PM »
I love guacamole, but Hass are pretty much the only avocados that can make good guac as the avos I grow are wet and fatty; they turn to straight-up liquid when you mash them instead of a paste-like Hass. Any way for me to make a guac from these types?

I'm late to the topic, but this year I've finally had enough flowers open where I am definition trying to create cool hybrids. This year I've been working with longiflora, bahiensis, laufifolia, neoinsignis, parviflora, maritima, emarginata and then others like cherilata, pinks mammoth, etc. I'm sticking to trying to cross species with the same flower types.

how is it going so far?

Filozopher, mine is six years old now and about the same size as yours, or a hair larger, and it made
about eight flowers this past summer but none of 'em set any fruit.  That was a first bloomng so I'm
hoping for better luck this coming summer.

Right now by the end of January it is partially deciduous but still holding 2/3 of its leaves.

Soon as the worst of the chilly weather has passed here I'm gonna give it a nice little bump of fertilizer
and hope for the best.

Good luck with yours!

Thank you! Same to you. I've been desperate to try a Rollinia during my life; it's a hard wait.

Guys, my Rollinia is about 5-6ft tall now in a 10 gal pot, leaves are huge and its pushing new growth, is it worth fertilizing with a bloom inducing fertilizer, the plant should be almost 3 years old now if not already a few weeks more than 3

They like lots of sun, lots of water, and flower and fruit better when fertilized. My compost bin started leaking into the root field. Better flowering followed, along with fruits.

Thanx Roblack… That's very useful advice for any of us who're trying to grow a biribá!

Mine is getting two of the requirements: full sun & lotsa water.

Mine bloomed finally late spring this year but set no fruit. (I'm guessing that was a 'trial run'.)

Obviously I'm going to have to feed it more generously.

Cheers!

How old is it?

I ordered seeds from overseas without a permit, and they got confiscated last year. It’s been on my mind recently and I’m wondering if because of that, I’m on some sort of list? What do you guys think? I do plan on getting my permit eventually but I don’t plan on buying any seeds overseas for a while, just not interested in anything right now

It’s quickly starting to decline as it needs more and more water each day in such a small pot, it had a huge growth spurt in the last 3 months, and I have a 15gal pot to put it in, but I’m wondering if I’m wasting my soil and space on this seedling. Are Lisa seedlings worth growing out. Is it true they’ll really produce a “bad” fruit. Mind you I’ve never even had an atemoya or cherimoya, and I probably at a squamosa when I was a little kid. I have a huge thriving Rollinia, a painters Rollinia, an ilama, and a sugar apple all in 5-6 gal pots that are 3-4 foot tall. Expectedly the ilama is doing the worst but I think that’s on me for ignoring my plants and not uppotting them. The Rollinia and sugar apple are very mature looking so I’m gonna uppot them, not sure what to do with the ilama. I want to take care of these, but I fear I’m wasting my time. The ilama has the burnt leaves. Not from nitrogen but from the harsh sun and not realizing the sprinklers didn’t catch it hidden away

huh? anyone know what this person is talking about? im rarely on here

I keep seeing many ilama seeds with various names referring to different foods and flavors. Can you guys give me a good rundown on ilama taste based on its flesh and skin color, if it even matters? I get people saying raspberry, candy, cotton candy; I've even seen someone name one as vanilla. Help, I have to decide what I'm going to grow. I don't want one because it's rare and does not taste good when it fruits in a few years. Give me as many descriptions as you want, please. I also plan on growing it in pots; hopefully, if the oldest one I currently have fruits and my parents like, I can put it in the ground, although even that is risky.

Wow! I was unaware of this species. I know the species name applies to the country it is endemic to, but it shares the name with my first hunting partner, Buteo jamaicensis, the red tailed hawks. Before my main passion became growing rare fruits, it was growing psilocybin mushrooms, before that it was growing Cannabis, and before all my botanical passions in my life my msim passion was falconry... my first red tailed hawk was named "Bella", which is why I'm trying to track down Manilkara bella seeds/plants...
It's interesting how our past and present interests influence the one another.

Now I need this Annona sp....

Doesn’t look like it
Did anyone ever source any seeds?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Psidium germination tips
« on: April 26, 2023, 02:49:15 PM »
I've collected psidium species in the past four months, and not one has sprouted.

I have had them in moist peat moss in the warm Fl sun for about 1-2 months; the seeds are still hard, not rotten. Should I soak them in ga3 for a day?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best tasting Plinia?

Looking to start a collection of them soon but due to seed-to-fruit time being so long on this genus id rather wait a long while for the best tasting ones instead of random varieties.

I just added a couple of Kwai Muks [Artocarpus parvus - wrongly called A. hypargyreus] which are in 5 gals. but have taken off briskly right after repotting them, already making new terminal growth and leaves.  They are supposed to be cold tolerant down to 25ºF so we'll see if they are after a warm season of growing this year.

Also added two small Olosapos [Couepia polyandra] out of curiosity.  These will have to be given some protections from the cold I suspect, but they're worth a gamble.

Fingers X-ed!

Can Kwai muk bear fruit in pots?

According to the table on the first page of this discussion, paw paw has approximately 2,000 times the annonacin content of atemoya. Presuming this was indeed the causitive factor,  I would need to consume over 600,000 lbs of atemoya pulp in 10 years to get the same effect. Put another way, that is  167 pounds a day for 10 years. I think I'm safe.

This is great news, here I was thinking being an Annona Enthusiast was a death sentence

Similar to the Asunta line, is anyone working on their range of hybrids or breeding line for special traits such as the sweetest fruit, fastest-growing, (I forgot the term but) a plant that flowers early or heavily, etc.
My first hybrid to start my breeding line is Monocanthus x Undatus

If you do breed df, what tips do you have? What genetics to get into my line next? what genetics to leave out? These were just some questions I thought of just now.
