Never heard of anyone doing that with mulberry. Have you tried using scions after the buds pushed, then put into the refrig?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedling guava started flowering at 6 months old
« Last post by CeeJey on March 27, 2024, 03:39:53 PM »
This thing started flowering at six months in the middle of winter outdoors, is now nine months old and is flowering again... this is relatively odd, right? This seems like a mutant.

And of course it lost the tag, so I'm not sure what kind it is (I think either a wild Hawaiian, some Brazilian variety from Marcos, or a Green Apple from Green Planet, I was growing seeds of all those around the same time). Guess I'll find out sooner rather than later at the rate this thing is trying to produce...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango flower beetle and sri lankan weevil

For the Sri Lankan Weevils, I walk around at night with a headlamp on and hand pick the weevils off leaves and drop them in a cup filled with soapy water. As mentioned, while they chomp on mango leaves, they tend to prefer other leaves (here it's been bauhinia, Silk Floss Trees, and Fried Egg Trees, followed by Barbados Cherry and now Canistel).

Fertilize your Sumo more and the fruit will develop the neck.  The neck on  sumo comes with larger fruit.

kulasa, your large variegated fruit and tree looks great. I wonder why some people have the variegated Minneola fruits that have no neck and still shows the nice orange-red stripes like Brian's fruit.

I have the variegated sumo/shiranui, and it looks similar to Brian's fruit with no neck.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Marumi Kumquat, is it really the most cold hardy kumquat?
« Last post by a_Vivaldi on March 27, 2024, 02:51:10 PM »
The JC Raulston arboretum in Raleigh NC has a marumi kumquat that was planted in ground in 2011. In 2014 and 2015 Raleigh experienced single digit freezes. In 2017 that kumquat was measured as 4 ft tall, indicating that it had not frozen to the ground recently, and was certainly not dead. 2018 saw an even colder winter with a low in the lower single digits. The website seems to indicate the kumquat is still alive, so I'd hazard a guess that, at least in the South, and probably in part shade, marumi kumquat is hardy below 10 F.

They also have a Dunstan that was planted in 2009. I can attest that in 2021 that tree was not only alive and producing fruit, it was also a good 15-20 ft tall.

While not ideal, you can trim the pushed buds and then toss them into your fridge for at least a few weeks to put them back into dormancy.
