when to pick valencia pride and alphonso mangos?
« on: July 28, 2014, 01:36:32 AM »
Got my first crop of valencia pride mangos and alphonso.  I have previous only had Irwin from the tree which must be tree ripen until it's soft.  My understanding is alphonso must be picked green and then ripen.  But how could u tell that is ready for picking since it will look green.  One of my VP mango fell and I took a picture of it.  It definitely was not ripe so would appreciate any help regarding when to pick this mango.

VP is like KP; to get a really good one, you have to let it ripen on the tree. Pick when it's fully coloured and blushed, and slightly firm to the touch.

If it's a choice between the risk of over ripe and under ripe, go with over; VP retains a better quality in late ripeness than Bowen (Kensington pride).

Easiest way to tell with VP is when the green turns to a nice yellow its ready to pick.

Actually, I was going to say with Alphonso's, at least as far as my ripening
went this year, is to let the green kind of turn yellow-green and then pick.
Even at yellow-green they will sometimes fall and be sort of soft/ firm, but ripen in a couple
days.  It is hard to decide, but I'd say let them  (the Alphie's) get at least 1/3
yellow/green and then pick....or if you have a soft place for them to fall, let them
do that....can you put like a sleeping bag under them....or maybe some bubble-wrap
packing material or something....???

And boy, mine were tasty, with the piney overtone to the sweet and mysterious
flavor that is only Alphonso.  The one fruit I can identify immediately by smell alone...

Agree that it is best to pick VP when the tips are yellowish. I made a mistake of picking one that was still green at the tip. It ripened after over a week but it was not as sweet as the ones that were yellow when picked.
