Intestinal blockage from satsuma membrane
« on: March 04, 2015, 12:01:28 PM »
A while back I heard about a person having blockage from eating too many satsumas. Last week I asked my doctor about it and he confirmed that it does happen. I guess the stringy membrane forms a ball and does not move through. Just curious if anyone had heard of this or if it's just a fluke.

i imagine a person would have to eat a pretty large amount of them to have that happen.

A bezoar?  I heard about this being caused by eating persimmons specifically, but not citrus.

I eat a bag of mandarins every few days so I hope not :)

In medicine you can find an example of pretty much anything happening.  That doesn't mean that you should worry about all of these happening to you.  If you did, you would have a lot of sleepless nights.  Doing a quick google search, there are a few case reports out there, but this is VERY rare.  I imagine that it would be much more likely in people with predisposing conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease.
