When Bob first alerted me to this anomaly, I had to ask him a series of questions to make sure he (or I) wasn't hallucinating...(and I had to check all the images I could find of Acerola fruit.... in books, and on the internet...i was particularly interested in the pulp).
1) I asked Bob, was the fruit over ripe? I know fruit can oxidize, and take on a vivid coloration, after it has started to rot, or ferment...I was thinking this must have been the case.......but his answer was, "no the fruit was perfectly ripe, picked from the tree"
2) Did you eat more than one fruit to check the color? "Yes" was the answer I got...all of them were red fleshed.
3)....OK, did you try cutting the fruit open early? before it's even mature? to check the pulp color??? Bob told me he would try...he cut an immature fruit open, then sent me a pic, and the interior was red!! This is very unusual!!! I believe the 3rd pic he posted is of this bisected immature fruit.
4)...Finally I asked if there were any other strange characteristics? He said the skin of the fruit was red, even when immature! Normally they're green!!
He also said the flavor was superior, and more complex than the common aceroals he's tasted (B17, and FLsweet)...having a certain twang that's pleasant, but hard to describe.
after I finished my inquisition, I was somewhat stunned....
I was convinced this conspiracy theory was true...
now I'm compelled to believe, that Bob, might be guided by some sort of tropical fruit angel....that leads him to rare red fleshed fruits!
I think we can safely say the Acerola is confirmed....but there's still another fabled fruit that needs to be vindicated!
http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=12068.msg204452#msg204452I've never seen one with that beautiful red color inside, the fruit looks superior to the yellow colored inside variety, I hope the tree is too; very attractive and interesting looking fruit; truly amazing.
Yes Leooel, very interesting. The shape reminds me more of a miniature tomatoe than the typical acerola shape that I have seen.
