How to get mango scion for grafting in Southern California
« on: November 11, 2017, 04:18:02 PM »
Having read about the success of forum members grafting mango in Southern California, I would like to give it a try.  I would like to know how best to get mango scions in this area.  I am willing to pay to get some.  I just don't know how to get some scions.  Thanks for any input and advice.

Wait until May or June to graft in California and have some good rootstock to graft on to. Then post on the forum what varieties you are looking for.

go get some mangos planted in your yard now. (home depot still has some manila mangos around).  let them get settled in and maybe around summer time you can look into getting some scions for grafting. best bet for scions around that time are the members here or you can check online (ebay etc).

Thanks for the advice.  I will buy some manilla rootstock plants and wait for the late spring to enquire about mango scions.

Thank you Pasca for posting this question! I have two mango seedlings one is keitt and other is manilla and i wanted to graft them and had a same question. Now its been answered lets hope we get the scionwood and have success grafting next year.

Although one thing is not clear to me is should I plant seedlings/rootstocks in the ground and graft them or its okay to graft while they are in pots.

Oscar (Fruit Lovers Nursery) has many mango scions.  May need to get a group together for quantity.

This probably a really dumb question, since top tier mango are patented, is propagation is illegal to sell?

Not all top tier Mango varieties are patented, in fact, I only know of Coconut Cream that is patented.

A list of current mango patents:

https://patents.justia.com/patents-by-us-classification/PLT/159

You can search the uspto website too, but it's search feature is not as friendly.
From what I see... sweet tart, fruit punch, and cotton candy do NOT appear on the accepted patent list...yet.

Sweet Tart and Fruit Punch are patented

In Truly Tropical's Coconut Cream Youtube video, Gary Zill says he only patented Coconut Cream.

Just searched in google patent search and I found the coconut cream patent but did not find any patents for sweet tart or fruit punch.

That would be odd to release plant material to the public and then work on the patent or wait for the patent to go through.
