Last year's fruit were very small having developed from a Summer bloom. All the seeds appeared to be nucellar. I saw no variation in the seedlings, but there may well be some in a larger population. The flowers contain adequate, viable pollen and could serve as male parents.

First 5* Citrumelo mature fruit sampled on 3 year old trees. The fruit has just begun to change color. I didn't expect much of the fruit, but it was sweet as well as acid and had a noticeable grapefruit flavor. There was a bit of bitterness
similar to grapefruit. The fruit was approximately 4 cm (1 1/2") in diameter, quite small. The Brix was 12.

When high grafted onto Poncirus the scions have survived and recovered after a low of 5°F (-15°C) during the past Winter.
I guess the fruit size will improuve with the age.
Below are the fruits from my 20 years old tree harvested today. The season was hot, 12° Brix, practically no perceptible internal oils, good lemonade when diluted three fold.

I've noticed all the fruits in the cold frame are rather small. I'm waiting for the outside trees to fruit. They may be larger.

Due to impending freezes, most of the 5* and Poncirus Plus fruit have been harvested. Both have small immature fruits remaining on the trees.

Largest 5* Citrumelo.

Most mature 5* Citrumelo

Poncirus Plus fruits.

Fruits off one 3 year old
5* Citrumelo tree. 2 fruits were removed earlier.

Diluted and sweetened Conestoga 026 juice. Taste is similar to lemonade.
2 of the persons taking part of the taste test commented on hints of grapefruit flavor.

Photos of a larger 5* Citrumelo found on a tree that was overlooked earlier.

3 year old Poncirus seedling with a small fruit. If this tree fruits again in the coming year, I may consider it somewhat precocious.

Having large populations likely contributes to encountering them. I also attribute encouraging early , tall growth to the transition from vegetative to reproductive phase in a shorter time. However, not all the seedlings responded in the same way.

Poncirus Plus fruits were allowed to become very ripe before opening. There was light, detectable sweetness, some wax, but not terribly objectionable. Many seeds, Brix 13.

Meyer Lemon with hybrid seeds. Brix 12. Very good flavor.

Poncirus Plus seeds germinating

Kabosu seeds germinating. They're quite small at this point.

Was that the fruit of your original 5* or of some improved seedling?  My 5* fruits have always a very long lasting bitter aftertaste. Even if they get somewhat sweet after a hot summer. Dunsten had a better taste. I used the juice.

US 1282 Cold damage in high tunnel. Late season flushing appears to be a big contributor. Poncirus x Cleopatra mandarin hybrid.

US 1281 foliage is rather Poncirus like, but shows no deciduousness. No cold damage observed. Poncirus x Cleopatra mandarin hybrid.
.

US 1279, the most deciduous of the three, appears to be quite hardy in the high tunnel. May show less hardiness out of doors. Poncirus x Changsha mandarin hybrid.

Poncirus Plus seedlings, which germinated rather well.

****************************
Kabosu seedlings on the far side. No Poncirus genetics.
Meyer Lemon pollinated by Segentrange 026 pollen seedlings on the near side. These seedlings are quite variable as Meyer Lemon is Zygotic.

Despite 026 appearing very similar to Poncirus, it's seedlings resulting from a Conestoga 026 x Meyer Lemon cross show monofoliate and bifoliate, as well as trifoliate seedlings.

Amazing results. Always love to see new hybrids being made with Poncirus/hybrids. Looking forward to more updates on them !

Interesting. do you think picture 3 and 4 could be tetraploids?

There are several that might be. I found the low percentage of trifoliate plants interesting, considering #026 (the pollen donor) is morphologically nearly indistinguishable from straight Poncirus.

Probably only phenotypically a poncirus alike, but not in genotype. i was thinking the same.  If it inherits its hardiness, these could be promising hybrids.

I also found some hardier C35 seedlings even some monofoliates. But not as hardy as yours.

this could get an interesting hybrid at least for zone 7, I have two year old meyer seedlings in ground (first year) and one of three managed -8 ° C without damage, while two others seem to have damages.

Poncirus Plus Nucellar seedlings. During the process of repotting Poncirus Plus seedlings today I found at least 3 sets of multiple seedlings from a single seed. This should indicate that some of the seedlings are of Nucellar origin.

Poncirus showing late season flush being damaged by Winter lows of +2F and strong winds.

Undamaged 026 Segentrange grafted on Poncirus.

Undamaged 006 Segentrange sibling to 026.

There are several Segentrange selections that approach the hardiness of Poncirus quite closely.

Amazing work, thanks for the updates Kumin.  I would love to cross these hardy segentranges with my changsha and nagami and select for zone 7 adaptation.

Akebia is right.  Working for zone 6 hardiness will have spinoffs for zone 7.

My immediate plans are to cross the Conestoga Segentranges with Citrandarins containing Changsha parentage. 852 and progeny such as Bishop.
Additionally, to cross 5 Star Citrumelo with all of the above. 5 Star has survived here, but suffers dieback each Winter.
