Annona Showdown big eyes vs pink ilama
« on: March 09, 2021, 03:59:49 AM »

Big eyes have highly variable fruit in size and the yes certainly vary enormously. They are a heavyweight in the realm of sugar apples in terms of taste as size. There are not many, if any better.

Its what'e inside that really counts.

So how would this fabulous fruit fare against a high quality deep pink ilama. Let's find out.

The taste test is now done and these are fruit from my trees sampled today and there is a clear winner. Stay tunes I will let you know.

The bottom picture was actually 2 more big eyes, Below is pink ilama presumable pajapita inside and it is clearly the winner. The strawberry taste of this almost 2lber (890g) makes it a sensation ambassador for the Annonas.

Heya Ran I wish I had more seeds as due to weather and bug interference the tree had only one fruit this season and I have only one tree of this variety. I don't have enough to share with the people who have been waiting for them as quite a few locals having been asking for some for a long time.

Thanks for sharing your taste comparison, Mike. Enjoyed the photos too! I would love it if ilamas were more available here in the states (for tasting and growing).

Some of you may recall when I posted about my Red Genova ilama a few years ago. It too has had a poor season with just a couple of small fruit still om it. This is also a great tasting Annona with a strawberry thing going on.

Nice.

Pajapita has a smooth skin, not nippled.

The one you tasted alongside Big Eyes is probably Guillermo.

Thanks Har and yes I had Guillermo seeds and must have got the 2 mixed up.

I just picked that big eyes previously pictured on the tree. Some do have very big eyes.

Hey Mike, don't you think Big Eyes could be a Sugarlata? I couldn't help thinking it is. I know the Taiwanese, Australians, and Indians have been experimenting heavily with Sugar Apple x Reticulata at one time and probably still do. If you look at India's NMK-1, which is known to be a Sugarlata according to some insiders, you could see some resemblance.

If your ilama tree is from seed, not grafted, it is a new variety.  Name it.

nice pics Mike thanks forum Sharing, the Big eyes fruit for first time last year at only 1.5 meters tall and set many fruits I was surprised for such a small tree, there were at a decent size for the amount of fruits and size of the tree, tradicional Sugar Apple sweet flavor but this is the first SA I have that really have flesh, is very meaty 🙃thanks!

Hey Thera they are just sugar apples like Raul pointed out. The trees are small and productive and fruit vary enormously in size and how big the sections are and even sometimes have a red flush on the skin, even on the same tree. It is like it is unstable. Thanks Har for the ilamas and yes the seedlings seem a little different from how their parents are.I planted a 'red' from Raul that is not big enough to fruit but it is my 5th one in the ground. I saw the report from the farm that Raul visited and some of the varieties are mind blowing and so different from each other. I would love to have some of those odd ones like heavy producers and purple fleshed.

Pink is a nice colour for a fruit but a fruit dropped off my red genova tree today that is an eye popper. Well its mother was red genova. The flesh is red with a purplish tinge but the pics made the flesh look red in the sun and purple in the shade when it was really in between. It did look a bit like beef. It had a great rich berry taste along with the Annona taste.

For those who missed it Ilamas have had an identity crisis. They are now Annona macroprophyllata.

What a beauty!
No cross that one with Anonodium manii to get some fruit size!
Might have to use another Annona as intermediary.

That reminds me that I spread around some Annonidiums about 8 years ago and wonder how they are going now. I heard about a fruiting tree around Mossman a while back. Unfortunately they are too far removed to ever be a part of ilama's family tree but suagr apples, atemoya and reticulata are close enough to ilama to cross.

Beautiful trees and fruit!! Anybody have spare big eye seeds i could purchase? Very young annona collection with only a soursop and a rollinia in the ground yet. Soursop is great producer about 3 years old. Rollinia will probably fruit this winter!   :D sugar apples are not common out here, i want to change that and need to try as many varieties as possible to see what works in my wet tropical climate
